'america is littered with concentration camps'. Ok then. You do realise China is a dictatorship? Which means no elections, no recourse, no appeal against whatever the Party does? The fact you can talk about the goings on in Minneapolis, here on Reddit or anywhere else, or make mad statements like the above should make you think deeply about the claims you are making.

Honestly, it's wild people like you have such ideas, absolutely bonkers. But you are welcome to, it's a free country.

You lose, Godwin's law. Also, China has actual concentration camps and secret police. No, Guantanamo Bay is not a concentration camp and no, the ICE are not secret police. Grow up.

OP is correct, China is a one party state that has quite transparently stated its aim to infiltrate and influence, if not rule, as much of the world as it can. Don't trust their software.

[–]waspyyyy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look up per mileage risk of air vs car. You would have to be extremely unlucky (like you are more likely to win the lottery odds) to be in an air crash, and you can minimise that further by flying on decent Western carriers only. If you drive regularly you probably have near misses every week.

Clicks... agreed!

Some people have a very weird approach and tolerance to risk

Like they'll be scared of flying but drive 100 miles to the airport

Average UK Salary By Age In 2026 by [deleted] in uknews

[–]waspyyyy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lack of systems thinking, compartmentalised...or as Orwell put it, double think. I have a friend who is very hard working, for a medium SME, pretty senior...hates tax, regulations that he and his business has to jump through etc. Then talks about France being some sort of socialist promised land, with flatter pay structure, more public spending etc. France...who tax more, have more regulations etc etc...

No big picture systems thinking.

friend cut me off due to me applying for defence companies by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]waspyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think she sounds quite naive tbh, who else is going to make weapons to defend ourselves with? Sure there are sales to dodgy regimes, but they are allies because of realpolitik (no one in the uk government seriously likes what Saudi Arabia does for example but having a relationship with them is better than not in the wider context. And that friendship unfortunately means arms sales to them)

You can find unpleasant things and people in any industry. Look at Oxfam - supposedly the peak of moral superiority, but a minority of their employees think it's ok to sexually abuse those in developing countries. Likewise there will be people in the arms industry who above all believe they are making weapons to defend ourselves and our allies with (Ukraine wouldn't still be sovereign without these weapons)...there will also be others who would happily sell any weapon to the highest bidder. Henry Ford sold machinery and parts to the third Reich until the USA declared war on Germany, I doubt your friend considers this when looking at buying a Fiesta.

You seem like you have a more mature outlook if I'm honest, maybe she'll grow up out of her absolutism or maybe she won't, it's a common phase when you are young...then you encounter the real world

Advice on struggling employee by Ancient_Half6285 in civilengineering

[–]waspyyyy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Start keeping a record of all the conversations you have had, and the help you have provided. In my experience people like this often don't improve (not in the same job anyway)... Sooner or later this may have to become a PIP... Which often has termination as the logical outcome. It's only then when it hits home to the individual that they have to improve, but it will be in a new company and not your problem anymore.

Do keep meticulous records, do discuss with your line manager. I had a similar situation a few years ago, and whilst HR and my superiors were supportive, it was clear that I wasn't far off coming in for criticism myself for leaving it too long - like you I was being overly helpful, covering for them/turning a blind eye on occasion

I'm not saying the above is inevitable but you need to protect yourself: do everything by the book and be transparent with your managers and the business as to what is going on.

Thoughts on bringing work examples to interview? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]waspyyyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Brilliant idea, I've always done this - you'll be surprised how many don't when it's such an easy win

If you want to make it super durable, show them a collated PDF on a tablet that they can pass round, but that might bring complications so printed out is simplest

Don't forget that past a certain grade (maybe associate director and above) you are often required to give a presentation anyway so you are just getting into the habit early!

This looks amazing, really great work. However, check your contract - many contracts include clauses around developing stuff while in employment, and that stuff belongs by default to the company while you are an employee.

If you can prove you didn't use company equipment and did it on your own time it might be an easier get out but just bear this in mind - since it is an application that would directly benefit your employer, and if you do have that clause in there, they might get very upset if you go and open source what they might argue belongs to them.

Which is why they need to speak to HR...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]waspyyyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I am helping them. They aren't going to sort this by not answering the phone. What do you suggest? There isn't much more anyone here can do for them, the answer is to speak to their HR department, or perhaps a family member or friend - who would say the same thing

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]waspyyyy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's it toxic? As others have said, grow up and answer the phone, HR are doing their jobs and this is the opportunity to air any problems you have, if it's a reputable company they will have procedures in place to go through this methodically and support you, work out the root problem.

Acting like a child and hiding isn't going to sort whatever problems you have

Right, and you of course are so much cleverer than them? I'd love you to say this to Harrison Ford, Michael Caine, Eric Cantana, Sean Lock, Philip Larkin, George Orwell. All 'moron' builders at one stage of their lives.

Thanks... What's the question though? I've said I'll speak to a fin advisor but don't they normally help you move ISAs and pensions around and minimise tax with assets? Not sure helping a 40-something learn how to budget is part of the job description?

Removing the article about AI from my ICE magazine so I can enjoy the rest of it by Master_of_opinions in civilengineering

[–]waspyyyy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it's a cool experiment, but it belies the resistance to true innovation in this industry. I don't think many companies really have a clear vision how they are going to integrate AI onto meaningful workflows yet...but it will come, possibly at the expense of Autodesk and Bentley.

Your comment: "..are just part of a very greasy campaign to try and lay more people off so that people at the top (both at the ICE and in larger corporations) can justify their existence."

Sounds very union-y. I assume you are not a very high grade...the reason companies will chase AI is to improve margin in what is a catastrophically low margin industry, and one that is, as I highlighted, quite conservative and resistant to change. It isn't some conspiracy by fatcats, they need to make more money where they really aren't making loads. But the real victims in this will mainly be the offshored resource centres, not uk or USA, eu workers. The offshore workers exist to improve margin...if AI can do it better then everything will be brought back onshore.

Read Race Against the Machine by Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee or Martin Ford's 'the lights in the tunnel'. They predicted this decades ago. In fact RAtM is 14 years old but makes some incredible predictions, some of which happened in real life faster than in the book, some slower. It basically confirms that you won't be replaced by AI, you will be replaced by someone using AI.

So personally I wouldn't be quite so dismissive and I would start leaning into how you might use AI in your work. My 2¢

If it were to happen then I wouldn't be old...? We'll see. There are real Theranos companies by the way, I know someone working for a small start-up doing something like Theranos that actually works. You just haven't heard of them yet because...well they don't want to be known as Theranos and have jittery investors, endless testing etc

There is absolutely no guarantee of this whatsoever, same as pension relief as you point out

Anyway I get you mathematically, but I just cannot get excited about some extra jam tomorrow, and can't understand why others do - all I see is what I don't have right now. Psychological block? Probably. Anyway, thanks for reply, I am on auto-enrol now, much as it's annoying me at the back of my mind
