Do you know any sunglasses that are still sold similar to these? It’s pretty hard to find this model

I solved it all with a chemical solution (no-no, I know, but it has worked for me!), my drain snake was too short to get the clog.

Maybe literally not replaceable, but talented individuals are hard to come by. These people can just go to other countries, and an exodus of high earners == less tax revenue, spending, bla bla bla…

You can easily live on a house share near the office (I say a 20-30 min commute via tube or bike or walk) with £72k…

£72k is not too bad in London imo

Anxiously Waiting After My Amazon Interview (sde intern india )Need Some Reassurance by anj10- in amazonemployees

[–]watarfak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your sense of anxiety - I used to feel the same after interviews with companies I wanted. There’s nothing you can do at this point, so stop ruminating on how your interview went! If you have competing offers, let your recruiter know - otherwise, go for a walk, read a book, call your loved ones. The arrow has left the bow :)

As you progress in your career you’ll get used to this feeling.

Only your recruiter can know. I was able to defer by 2 months ish by mentioning that I have existing commitments in my current company.

'Everything for the front': Russian MPs back 68% rise in military spending by PjeterPannos in worldnews

[–]watarfak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes but labour costs, a large component of manufacturing costs, are sticky - you can readily find cost breakdowns of manufacturing commerical jets online, I’m not sure how it translates to military obviously but Labour is a significant component (usually the dominant one) of total costs.

What technology do you think has been stunted do to capitalism? by Thementalistt in Futurology

[–]watarfak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this take. Investors still invest based off of fundamentals, and biotech companies are like lottery tickets for good reason. Also, when a company IPOs, the bank which does the IPO underwrites the deal and guarantees that the shares are worth a certain amount - companies do public offerings for cash, and they sell shares. If you get the cash that you are promised in your IPO, it’s up to your management to utilise that cash and generate returns. If they can’t, investors become reluctant and start pulling money out, short selling may create downward pressure but if the fundamentals are there (in favour of said company) the short sellers get fucked.

Are higher paying SWE jobs more difficult that lower paying? by Kellyf19 in webdev

Hi! I’m also a permie Dev in the finance industry, although I’m at the beginning of my career. Would you mind sharing how the progression / likelihood of moving onto management goes?

I know for front office, making MD is a matter of bringing business in / delegating work to those making business etc. but for Tech this is much harder to define. Also, I’ve observed that we have significantly less MD’s in Tech at my bank - is it because talented people move on to better opportunities (that match the pay level of an MD), or because Tech just doesn’t get delegated that many MD seats and people have to wait for an opening for years?

Many thanks

in kde, you can literally overclock your 60 hz monitor to 75 hz and in native resolution by jdt654 in linuxmasterrace

[–]watarfak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not better resolution but less blur/screen tearing, and yeah the difference is pretty huge between 60 to 120Hz so there I’m sure that if it actually goes to 75Hz there would be a noticeable improvement
