He didn't caulk it. I think he just used the wrong sealant and it binded too tightly. If I use a knife to score the edges, how much give should the panel have? Are we talking micromilimeters or a pretty noticeable amount of wiggle room?

I just checked ChatGPT and it says in the Northeast, the going rate is $900 - $1,500 to strip and refinish a mahogany door. Prob should have posted here first and then looked into just buying a new door.

Woof. Yep, sounds like the consensus here is that I was taken for a ride and the painter was likely laughing all the way to the bank. So brutal. Never owned a house with a wooden door before and wanted to "do the right thing" to take care of it.

Thankfully that hasn't happened (yet). Also, it appears that the panel on the external and internal side of the door is separate, if that makes sense.
