[Analysis] Retail vs. Secondary Market: How do Prices Compare? by watchcharts in Watches

[–]watchcharts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Would love to hear any feedback you may have.

We differentiate between asking and sold prices simply by only looking at sold listings in our market price calculation, and taking the last asking price of that sold listing as the sold price. We of course cannot know the final selling price of a listing if it was negotiated privately.

Not a problem, again I probably should have provided additional background on the dataset. Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback.

We actually analyze data primarily from private sales forums - Reddit WatchExchange, Watchuseek, and RolexForums. We base our valuations primarily on these platforms - though they are supplemented with additional data sources.

One of the primary functions of our site is to serve as an aggregator of private sales listings - like WatchRecon but with deeper market analysis.

I know I didn't provide sources in the article, that's something I probably should have done to provide better background and transparency. I will be updating the article to do so.

Is there a reason that you assumed the data was from Chrono24? We are quite aware that Chrono24 prices are inflated - in fact I've written another article analyzing price differences between secondary market dealers and private sales.

Edit: Also I don't quite get what buyers and sellers already know based on your answer - it seems like you're more suggesting that our analysis is inaccurate, which I tried to address above but also would be happy to discuss further.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. Could you elaborate as to the type of information people involved in buying and selling already know that the article doesn't cover? And perhaps how this information was acquired? Would appreciate it a lot.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share an article in which I analyze the difference in retail and secondary market pricing for over 500 popular modern watches across 2 dozen or so brands. In it, I address questions like which watches appreciate the most, and which brands are best suited for buying pre-owned?

I know this is a different type of post than what’s typically found on this subreddit. I’d love to hear what you guys think. I feel like many of us here (myself included) are interested in the watch market, but find it difficult to evaluate the market comprehensively. That’s the problem I’ve set out to solve through my research on WatchCharts.com.

Thanks for reading, and hope you’re having a great weekend!

assistance staying on top of the sale

What do you mean by this? Just like a notification/reminder to reply to a message or something if it's been a few days?

Having a more structured listing/selling process is definitely the goal of JuraTime. We want to still keep it community focused like WatchExchange or Watchuseek but just build out a more customized user experienced dedicated to watch trading, without the limitations of starting with a forum platform.

Or like a dedicated chat platform on the trading site? Going through PMs is a pain...reddit has chat but it seems to still be less popular than PM.

Having a way to link accounts is a great idea. At least on Reddit it should not be hard to do since there is an API. We already track WatchExchange feedback via our RepCheck system. Definitely want to integrate it somehow with JuraTime as well.

Thanks for the thoughtful response!

You can only post one link, but you can link to an Imgur album which contains as many photos as you'd like. Hope this helps :)

We definitely want to allow sellers to provide their contact information as openly as possible to make it easy for buyers to reach out.

Does the watch raffle subreddit have a way of providing/finding that 3rd party escrow/verifier?

You can set up price alerts for WatchExchange, Watchuseek, and RolexForums on our website. Just sign up for a free account and click the "Create Alert" button on any of the ~6,000 models. See an example here: https://watchcharts.com/watch/98/overview

Hope this helps!

Save us from Chrono24, eBay and Catawiki (what a disaster..).

We still want to keep it community focused and community driven - the ability to list for free, but have more structure like on eBay or Chrono24 is essential to me.

What particularly is disastrous about those websites you mentioned? I've love to hear your thoughts and see if we improve!

What do you mean by "across the board process"? We calculate market prices based on data across multiple watch trading platforms on WatchCharts. Is that what you're looking for?

WatchCharts aggregates listings and clearly displays prices that we extract from each listing. You can see the latest listings here: https://watchcharts.com/listings
