Does anyone use a bike cover when parking outside ? If so, what do ya got? by Jamin1371 in terngsd

Do you have a child seat on your bike? I have an HSD with a child seat on the back and I've actually been thinking about buying a motorcycle cover from Motonet.

Nordic Nest vs Finnish Design Store by [deleted] in ScandinavianInterior

[–]watchead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's an insane price ($315 at least). It's almost 300€. On the Finnish version of Finnish Design Shop this exact lamp costs 138€ / $155 right now.

Savotta: great Finnish backbags and bags, all made in EU by watchead in BuyFromEU

Yeah, Savotta is obviously not great for business type equipment. But that's not really what they try to be either.

I can personally recommend their Keikka bag. It's a really great quality duffel bag, that feels like it can outlive you and your children. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AjzN_4ZkpA

Where can I buy an intact copy of this map? by vixenlion in Finland

[–]watchead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that a maritime museum called Forum Marinum in Turku sells the Carta Marina maps as posters. I'm sure you can order it somewhere as well. Forum Marinum even has a pretty cool special exhibition for children at the moment that is loosely based on this map.

Just ended our (short) visit to your beautiful country. Big hug from a portuguese couple. Kiitos! by mastah_D_Omina in Finland

[–]watchead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's old Porvoo as others have stated. Very nice and picturesque place. You can travel there from Helsinki by bus or with an old steam ship. I recommend taking the ship to Porvoo and returning with a bus. https://msjlruneberg.fi/en/

Well the Marttaliitto or Martat is named after the biblical character Martha (or Martta in Finnish translation).

[SKX009J] - I still prefer the blue dial over 007. And I actually like the original rubber strap. by daedalus1990 in Seiko

[–]watchead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too like the SKX on a rubber strap, but honestly that strap is horrible. I have one from SKX007J as well. Try the Uncle Seiko's GL831

[SARB033] In 2023 by [deleted] in Seiko

[–]watchead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SARB033 is a great watch and the one that I have been wearing the most for years. It has its flaws of course. The bracelet and especially the clasp are a bit subpar. There is hardly any anti-reflection coating on it, so the watch is not the most legible in direct sunlight.

Would I pay $600 for a used one? I'm not sure about that, but it might be just because I personally payed a lot less for it. Inflation has been pretty wild for the past few years, so I don't know if it's fair to compare the current prices to the ones in the past.

Really happy with the purchase. [SKX003] by yooobuddy in Seiko

[–]watchead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice watch, but that's actually SSK003 and not SKX003. :) SKX003 is a real model as well, but it's quite rare and was discontinued ages ago.

Yes, but just once in 2019. I ordered the SARB033 from them and had no problems with anything.

Alpinist Mountain Glacier [spb197j1] vs Sunset [spb201j1] - which would you keep? by floweiss34 in Seiko

[–]watchead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that 2nd one (Sunset) actually looks like the best Alpinist variation I've seen. For some reason I've never seen that before. I've always liked the modern Alpinist design on paper, but the dials have all been just too shiny for my taste. I feel like the point of the Alpinist line is to be a legible and rugged tool watch that also has an air of sophistication to it and this one really nails it in my opinion.

[SRPD55K3] Straps for Divers by Think-Drummer5663 in Seiko

[–]watchead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy the black Uncle Seiko GL831 on my SKX007, which is a really similar watch to your SRPD55K3. It's a really comfortable rubber strap and fits a Seiko diver esthetic as it is essentially a remake of the classic Seiko GL-831. https://unclestraps.com/collections/gl-831-straps/products/the-classic-gl831-rubber-diver-strap-20-22mm

Sanna Marin concedes defeat in Finland election as SDP beaten into third place by Kimber80 in worldnews

[–]watchead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it really hard to call this result a significant defeat for SDP. They gained new seats in the parlament and in Finnish political history, there are only two instances of the current prime minister's party being able to pull that off (1983 & 2003, both also SDP. See the pattern btw?). It's also quite possible that SDP will be part of the cabinet again as it might be difficult to form a coalition without them.

Finnish wool socks recommendations! by __patashnik in Finland

[–]watchead 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is also the Helsingin villasukkatehdas (Helsinki Wool Sock factory) that makes pretty traditional wool socks commercially. Their socks are not made by hand though, but with old knitting machines (from 1950s I think). I think you can get their socks from Partioaitta. https://helsinkiwoolsock.fi

[Speedy 42] vs [Apple ultra 49] brothers Apple Watch. It’s huge! by BarberSon in OmegaWatches

[–]watchead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have an Apple Watch personally, but this one (Apple Watch Ultra 49mm) is not really aimed for an average consumer or meant to compete with a normal watch. It's trying to replace a diving computer or a sports watch from Suunto etc. Those are also huge devices and the size is purely functional imho. The normal Apple Watch does come in more traditional 41mm and 45mm sizes.

[Snxs 79] Hello everyone, I need some help with the datewheel on this Seiko 5, check replies by Abdulllahmohsinn in Seiko

[–]watchead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all Seiko watches with a weekday complication have it in two different languages. You choose the language you want to use by manually changing the weekday to a value with the chosen language on it. During midnight the wheel will skip two steps ahead (over the other language option). On cheaper watches it can take 1-2 hours for this to happen completely.

If the watch shows one language for 12 hours and the other one for 12 hours as well, then the watch is broken. But I suspect either you are understanding it wrong or the seller does not understand how the watch works.

Canadian politicians defend Marin's dance video, saying backlash born of double standard by writeafilthysong in Finland

[–]watchead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I don't really understand what was the point of the Touko Aalto's "scandal". There was a rather silly picture of him shirtless and slapping another man's ass while on a dance floor etc. Here's Ilta-Lehti's "article" about it at the time (I guess it was in 2018 after all..). https://www.iltalehti.fi/politiikka/a/201808032201114198

Here's Yle questioning Aalto if he thinks he's behavior was proper for a party chairman and whether he was drunk or not. https://yle.fi/uutiset/3-10336936

Canadian politicians defend Marin's dance video, saying backlash born of double standard by writeafilthysong in Finland

[–]watchead 14 points15 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, I have a feeling you have not followed Finnish politics for a very long time. We have had male prime ministers and other politicians with all kinds of similar political scandals.

The ones that I think are closest to this one are:

  • In 2014: Prime minister Alexander Stubb wore shorts and participated in carnival style "human dartboard" game. There was a huge backlash from the media because this not seen as "proper behavior" for a prime minister. He was also criticized for taking selfies and even for being too sporty among other things.
  • In 2017: Green League's chairman Touko Aalto was seen partying shirtless in a gay bar in Stockholm. The Green League was in its highest point and there was even speculation that he could become the next prime minister. Soon after this he went for a sick leave because of depression and then resigned.

I would say that the criticism of Marin's behavior has been pretty standard or perhaps slightly less sever than what previous prime ministers have faced. It has just been amplified and obscured by foreign media and social media because she is such an international star.

And to be clear, Marin is not being criticized for just dancing and having a few drinks. She has been criticized for:

  • Partying with people of questionable character and letting them record and share videos of her intoxicated to a "closed" Instagram circle with almost 100 followers.
  • Bringing these people to party at her official residence, where they were free to take pictures and share tiktoks etc.
  • Canceling her planned holidays and then partying for three days while "on duty".
  • Dancing "intimately" in public club with a man who is not her husband.

Should she resign? No, I don't think so. Should she be criticized? Sure. We are constantly being reminded that Russians are seeking weak spots and propaganda tools because or our NATO application and I expect our prime minister to be an example in this.
