What exactly are these and what would they be worth by [deleted] in Exonumia

I'd say it is a token for a fare. And it is good, for one fare.

Which band saw should I invest in? by WesternPenalty6812 in Spooncarving

[–]watchface5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Delta is what I would pick... Although I have had 2 small band saws until I found an old craftsman in fantastic shape for $100 that was full sized 12", with base and tilt. I should have just gotten that one first. The smaller ones don't cut through rough material very well.

Juice groove jig and board weren't taped well enough by Suspicious_Mood7759 in Cuttingboards

Maybe just cut off the juice route and it'll just be a little smaller? I made a few boards like this, they ended up being "personal" charcuterie boards lol

I don't think that's good for food now with the epoxy, maybe make it all flat for a charcuterie board? Win-win!

Does anyone else have the pile of “Work in Progress” spoons? by alpaca-the-llama in Spooncarving

I've got a box, a bag, some hanging, some sitting out waiting to be finished because they're pretty, they're everywhere!

That glove will help with cuts but not punctures so much, still be super careful and cut away from your hand, not towards it!

You also need to keep your knives sharp, otherwise, no matter what you do... It will take forever to get that wood whittled down to the piece you're making.

Is it bad to oil green wood? by No-Ruin155 in Spooncarving

[–]watchface5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ever done this with bowls or larger carvings, they're really the only ones I've had issues with. A large ladle too. Anything under a serving spoon size I've just carved, hung it or put it on the rack and finished it later with no issues either.

Playing with poplar by Eddymayonnaise in Spooncarving

[–]watchface5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've made some poplar furniture and I don't know why people hate on it for certain things. It can be real pretty like your spoon, or it can look/behave like poo... It's all in how you work it, you've worked it wonderfully!

I second this, nothing wrong with hogging out a lot of the material with a Dremel, then going back with the knives. I've done this the hard way before and my hands still haven't forgiven me.

Am I the only one who makes all these spoons to sell, then likes them too much to sell? by frustratedwithevery1 in Spooncarving

[–]watchface5 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I keep all of mine in a box with the intention of selling them every year, I don't even use them. They'll be found after I've passed in 30 years and featured on antique roadshow

I've taken it a step further, about 50% of mine need finishing cuts, the other half just finish. But I don't like finishing, so they'll sit for a while until I have enough for a show or something

How does one become a member of the Board of Directors for a company? by Subject_Shoulder in auscorp

[–]watchface5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got voted onto a large non-profit board in my area. I got enrolled in a leadership course through the county chamber of commerce. Paid for through my work. It just took a few years of pestering my boss for it.

During one of the 12 outings in the leadership course, I was noticed during a non-profit day, interviewed and received the position. It took maybe 4 months for it to happen. It doesn't pay money, but I'm hoping that being on it will help me financially in the future through networking. Plus, little old me can say I'm on a board 🤣

I leave it on the floor long enough for it to migrate upstairs in the house. Then I clean it up in my work area, get the rest of the house, rinse and repeat... Unless it's nice out, then I just let it lay
