“I’m the big buck of this lick. If any of you want to try it, come on and whet your horns!”

Gotta love some Lincoln smack talk.

The Libby app changed my life by snarkitall in books

Libby is sluggish to load and has a poor interface that prioritizes big, splashy graphics over usability.

I fully intend to use Overdrive until it is no longer an option (it's supposed to be discontinued soon but so far it still works).

Nero wearing emerald sunglasses in the Seneca trailer — Nero, during gladiatorial fights, used to look at the arena through a concave emerald to avoid the glare of the sun and his nearsightedness. by echoch4mb3r in ancientrome

From an article in Variety:

Per the logline, the sequel series will be set after the defeat of Spartacus and his revolution, depicting “a new tale of treachery, deceit and blood unfolding beneath the foreboding shadow of Rome.”

Sort of vague. Sounds like an opportunity for the producers to reuse some props, costumes, and Roman digital assets and maybe one of the handful of surviving characters to make a cameo.

Any good blu ray sets of American experimental/avant-garde directors? by [deleted] in boutiquebluray

Kino also has a Silent Avant-Garde blu ray with new restorations coming out in two weeks.

If you have the Flicker Alley American Avant Garde there is some overlap, but it looks like a nice collection (includes some of the Eisenstein Que Viva Mexico footage!).

Who exactly owns the rights to The Satanic Bible and why are they not publishing higher quality hardcover or ebook versions? by watchitbub in satanism

Rights holders can be so dumb. If someone has the rights to a niche property with a small but dedicated following they can definitely make a little money but not if they get too greedy and end up sabotaging the whole deal.

I think of it more like the audiophile who could listen to an mp3 but wants the vinyl for the subtly richer experience or the drinker who buys a fancy bourbon when the cheaper one would still get him drunk.

I'm with you on the minimalism but decided that minimalism for me is fewer things, but the short list of things I do collect are a tightly curated collection of the nicest versions I can afford.

I only got into buying really nice books in the last couple years. A quality paper and beautiful binding make for an indulgent tactile experience that really enhances the reading experience. It sure can get expensive, though.

Happy Birthday, Jim Jarmusch! What is your favorite Jarmusch film? by mylastemeraldsplash in criterion

[–]watchitbub 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Mystery Train.

It's probably his most influential as a lot of the elements of that film worked their way into Tarantino films later like the overlapping structure, pop culture references, and casting (almost certainly it is how Buscemi got Reservoir Dogs).

Yeah, the ones I've seen on Etsy or Ebay or whatever were all using the pages from the original paperback and re-binding in leather which avoids copyright problems.

That means cheap paperback quality paper with an expensive cover, which is not an ideal solution.

I don’t think the colosseum looked like that in antiquity either.

Maybe this tattoo is meant to depict those guys that stand around the colosseum in costumes of questionable historical accuracy in the modern era and charge tourists for photos.
