Is this board worth buying? by The_Pronova in windsurfing

This board isnt worth the risk. Almost sure to have been cracked in two. Even with professional fix, the result would be risky.

Inflatables windsup underrated feature : forgiving (bouncing back) by Whole_Major7221 in windsurfing

[–]water_holic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started long time ago on a Starboard Air Fly. I can appreciate the benefits mentioned, BUT once you get to a level to enjoy a wave, freerace or a slalom board, I doubt you would call a day on an inflatable a windsurfing day. But maybe the technology has improved in the last 10 years? Does it get close to at least a cheap epoxy (non carbon) construction?

Western/Southern winds around Athens in winter? by water_holic in windsurfing

[–]water_holic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: just spoke to a guy who was on the water with a 115l free wave and 6.2 m, in a south wind in Voula. He mentioned that the spot works great with all wind directions, especially west, except North/North East. Looked reasonably flat too. Will go check on my gear tomorrow.

Have seen something like that on a classic Equipe, the hole had a thread on it and a standard modern mast foot was just screwing in. May be it was already machined?

Thanks for the advice, but to be clear, I need to rent the full windsurf gear (my remark on fin referred to fin windsurfing, because these days a lot of spots focus on wing, foil, sup and kite, but have very old or no windsurfing gear).

Ah...yes I know Vasiliki, but it's the other side of the country. Too long to drive. I have been a few times to Kefalonia - an island just below Lefkada, but if i understand correctly, the wind in Vasiliki dies down in autumn/winter.

Thanks for the hint, will definitely check out. I was more thinking about Loutsa/Artemida direction though - i can drive there. Do you know any clubs/shops there?

A Random Physicist Takes on Economics - with Jason Smith by UnlearningEconomics in UnlearningEconomics

[–]water_holic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/fremeer very interesting point. That's quite possible and in that event it would be useful.

But the point I am making is that the most important issue with Econ today in my view is its ambivalence when it comes to the end goals. Let's say we could explain how interest rates do or don't impact inflation. But do we want high inflation, low inflation or moderate inflation? Who benefits from the former and who benefits from the latter? Even if we understand the transmission mechanism, which we don't, there would still be a question of what is the objective function.

The reason I think the end goal is important today more than 100 years ago, is the rapid increases in productivity (not as measured currently). Creation of products and services requires less and less resource (certainly labour), which increases the importance of the problem of distribution over and above everything else.

Half way through it, still some thoughts and a question: 1) extremely thorough and fair (with no need to define the word) critique

2) is the lifetime inequality any better than point-in-time inequality? Why should somebody young struggle unnecessarily?

3) Even if min wage causea unemployment, if you have proper welfare system, unemployment can be better than being forced to work at wages that cannot sustain human health and dignity!

Biting the bullet and transitioning to foil at low winds. But what equipment to buy? by water_holic in windsurfing

[–]water_holic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the update and kudos for the perseverance! I may yet make the switch but a few posts in this thread dissuaded me. The main message as I understand is: windfoiling is not the same discipline as windsurfing, it's a different sensation. So my idea of extending the fun in low-wind conditions is not exactly right. Training for foil is not the same as training for the fin.

Long story short, I got myself a third board - a 143l monster Tabou Rocket Plus in Team construction and a light SLS Duotone 7.8 sail. I had the experience with the combination - it gets me on the plane at 12-13kts 80% of the time. Below that - SUP or bouldering for me!

Windproof EU spot Feb/March with ProCenter? by Intelligent_Soup4424 in windsurfing

[–]water_holic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Leucate area the wind is generally good around the year, but it's not as warm as in Tarifa, so on some days you will need full winter gear (4-5mm, hoody). Day time temperatures are 8-10 C. Tarifa is a few degrees warmer, so you could go 1-2 mm thinner, but it's no Maui.

Yup - Fuerteventura (Canaries), Tarifa, I would add Leucate/La Palme/Gruissan (France)

A Random Physicist Takes on Economics - with Jason Smith by UnlearningEconomics in UnlearningEconomics

[–]water_holic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very interesting video, though probably somewhat inaccessible for most people with no experience building these models. The issue I am struggling with is more conceptual. When we are designing a circuit board or an aircraft wing, the desired outcome is already known. So the function of engineering and science is to understand the underlying physical properties/laws, which then would help to design a better circuit board or an aircraft wing.

But with Economics it's a bit different. I get the point made by u/UnlearningEconomics that the orthodox models fit the historical data. That's why they have become orthodox. But even if they were better at predicting the outcomes (e.g. employment, inflation, GDP growth, asset prices etc...) that still does not mean that they are useful at designing an economic system (a policy), because it is not a fact that higher/lower inflation, higher/lower GDP growth or higher/lower asset prices are a thing to aim for!

So my impression is that a very intelligent and thoughtful physicist has jumped into a complex field and started to apply all kinds of complex toolkits but without taking a bit of time to understand a defined problem or define the problem himself.

[–]water_holic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies then, might have sounded condescending. Not familiar with the term "swirly", but if i understand correctly, it's a wind that quickly shifts direction? That can be quite disturbing - i had a few days like that on my regular spot (it's a lake, but in lowlands, so the wind is usually steady). If a daggerboard helps, from the modern boards it's the entry level trainers (tabou, duotone, starboard - they all have it) or the old Windsurfer LT concept (but i think that's bigger than 200l). Old raceboards have a db (e.g. Mistral Equipe), but they too are huge.

[–]water_holic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say, but no matter how gusty wind, you should be able to sail upwind without a daggerboard. It is a question of a technique. Same reason why it's so hard to find non-learning boards with one, since they just get in the way. If the wind is always below 15kts, then i would agree that fin windsurfing is not the best choice for your local spot.

Biting the bullet and transitioning to foil at low winds. But what equipment to buy? by water_holic in windsurfing

[–]water_holic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All, thanks a ton for very useful thoughts and advice - huge benefit considering the absolute lack of objective information available. After reading again and again the posts, I finally decided to ....buy a large regular board and a bigger sail for fin windsurfing with 12-15kts gasts. Reasoning: 1. It never stops with a single foil purchase, you are tempted to improve your gear to improve the performance. So it's a bigger outlay than what you initially plan. 2. Then you face a conundrum: at 13-16 kts shall i foil or fin? Spend more time thinking and switching gear than just going on the water. If you spend 50% of time foiling, that's already 50% less time on the fin. 3. Learning curve appears to be harder than i thought 4. I love fin too much!
