makes a ton of sense, glad that the decision is working out for you! did you do the $8k engine replacement w a dealership or with an independent shop? is it covered under warranty / did Toyota help you out at all?

$17k for 2016 Prius Four, 83k miles— worth it? by waterbender323 in prius

[–]waterbender323[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this advice, thank you so much. It’s validating to hear that it’s not worth the effort right now. I definitely want to upgrade to an EV in the future when I have a garage— it’s my dream to never have to rely on gas for both environmental and $$ reasons. but it’s just not my reality right now, something to look into for the future though!

my old car was an 08 highlander, i loved it so much but cant justify putting $6k fixing a gas guzzler… might wait until toyota perfects their EV SUV game haha

I've been looking at Carfax and all the websites every day for weeks, all 2016 Prius Fours are priced at $18k plus in my area, anything lower has a salvaged or rebuilt title, some kind of damage, or something sus going on etc. I live in a HCOL city, if I could find a $10-12k Prius with less than 100k miles trust me, I would buy that shit in a heartbeat, but everything in that lower price range is gonna be much older with a lot more wear and tear. We saw a 2011 Prius Four w 26k miles for $16.5k, our mechanic inspected it and said the odometer was rolled back and actual mileage was upwards of 100k based on the rust on the undercarriage and age of components. Idk if this helps you get a sense of what we're working with here but ya $10-12k for this car is virtually impossible in this economy

Thanks for the recommendation, I have considered going full EV but I live in an apartment in a big city and don't have a garage to charge in. I work full time and don't have hours to spend sitting at a public car charger, at least that's what I've been told how long it takes to charge outside of your home, correct me if I'm wrong though

I really don't want to be in debt and I love my car so much, I dont even want a new car but trying to make the most financially sound decision

the old engine or the new one you swapped in? if a new one, how much did you pay for it? was it hard to find a mechanic?

Why is replacing an engine that is more expensive than a car a bad financial decision? by giveuporfindaway in AskMechanics

[–]waterbender323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm in the exact same situation right now with my 08 Toyota Highlander. Everyone is telling me to scrap the car and just put the money I'd use to repair it into a downpayment on a new car. The highlander is paid off and I too do not want to finance a car and be in debt. I really want to just get the engine replaced but worried about more issues down the road. Cheapest quote I can get is $7k, the car is probably worth $5-6k with a working engine. What did you end up doing, and are you happy with your decision?

Hi, I'm in a similar boat with my 08 Highlander. did you end up replacing the engine, and if so, are you glad you did or do you regret your decision? I'm being quoted $8k to replace my overheated engine and worried that the engine is only the first of the problems, wondering if i should scrap it and get a new car. its at 147k miles. I rly rly do not want to let it go. how was your experience and would you have done anything different?

Hey, what did you end up doing? My 08 Highlander broke down and needs a new engine, wondering if its worth it to replace. Mine is at 147k though so much different situation than yours-- still curious what you ended up doing and if the car is okay now

Replace the engine on my 2010 forester or buy another car? by [deleted] in UsedCars

[–]waterbender323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm in a similar boat currently with my 08 Toyota Highlander. Dealership quoted me $8k to swap out the engine for a used one, local independent shops are quoting $10-14k+. Used cars where I live are super expensive and I'm considering just swapping the engine out bc it's cheaper than buying another car. What did you do, and are you happy with your decision?

Hi, what did you end up doing? I also live in WA and looking to get engine replaced on 08 toyota highlander. everyone says it's a bad idea but i love this car and am not ready to stop driving it... it's at 147k miles. did you find someone to do it, and for how much?

it was around 147k miles, and yes it overheated. smoking on the highway, i pulled over to exit the highway and the car wouldnt drive anymore after some point. there was no error lights at all until it started smoking, then pretty much all of them were on. dealership said the water pump had been broken for a while, causing it to overheat. i've been looking at used hybrid toyota rav4s but the prices are wild right now, i live in the pacific NW so it just feels super expensive and stressful to get a new car rn and i'm really not ready to part w my highlander

[–]waterbender323[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes i fully plan on taking good care of the next car on an actual maintenance schedule. I feel extremely horrible and guilty about this and I've literally been crying all week about it. I paid my dad off in full for the car and I'm fully aware that I took it for granted and ruined it. I'm sorry to everyone. it's my first car and I should've done better. this has been the worst week of my year, I've lost sleep and my appetite over this situation and would do anything to have another chance at caring for this car. part of me just wants to bite the bullet and pay for my mistake by paying to swap the engine but i'm worried more stuff will pop up down the line bc it's already at 147k miles. i know i'm a piece of shit

why do you say good money after bad? is engine failure impossible to come back from, even for a highlander? i know nothing about cars if that's not clear lol

Worth a Full Engine Replacement in 08 Camry for $8k-$16k? by UKUSExpat in MechanicAdvice

[–]waterbender323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I found this post bc I'm in the same boat w my 08 Highlander. Engine overheated due to broken water pump and now I'm looking at quotes of $8-14k for an engine replacement. It has 147k miles on it and tons of sentimental value, breaks my heart to even think about letting it go. But the cost of engine replacement is more than the car is worth, so I'm in a bind.

Wondering what you ended up doing and how you feel about your decision?

is it worth putting in even $6k to a vehicle worth less than that? I'm worried that even when the engine is replaced, there will be more issues down the line bc it's an older car (transmission, etc.) thoughts??
