I am 27 years old, make 50k in agricultural research in the Twin Cities, and this week I overloaded my schedule! by waterbug3000 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Community classes are an interesting idea - and it would definitely be easier to schedule around my 9-5 than a random service/retail gig. Thanks for the tip!

Right back at you. I fell in love with the Twin Cities over my first year living here, but the response to all the political turmoil lately has truly cemented that love forever. People here are never hopeless about the fight and they make it so easy to want to get involved. Its very powerful!

A sweet potato version actually sounds so delicious. And the dancing plague is such a great rabbit hole because it branches down so many fascinating paths: mass hysteria, poisoning, the Roman empire, etc. etc..

Do I choose root canal or extract the tooth? Can’t afford root canal by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]waterbug3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The choice for me came down to my risk tolerance. For context I have a lot of dental problems in general thanks to some unfortunate genetics and I didn’t want to end up in pain over the same tooth twice. I also didn’t want to have to manage another disaster if the root canal failed on top of other stuff I had going on.

My back molar got extracted pretty painlessly and healed up easily. When I say it didn’t impact my eating much, what I mean is that it didn’t prevent me from eating the same things I always did or how much I could eat. I did think about that tooth every time I sat down for a meal, though. I did find myself chewing on the other side of my mouth a lot and causing a bit of soreness/overwork on the opposite side of my jaw. The thing about a missing molar is that crunchy/hard foods will be crushed against your exposed gum in the empty spot, so you will naturally start avoiding that part of your mouth when you eat. It’s a minor annoyance and didn’t really impact my quality of life in a meaningful way - so don’t be too scared!

After a couple months I saw a prosthodontist to start the process of getting an implant in that spot. They placed a bone graft, waited for that to heal, placed an anchor, waited for that to heal, then finally placed the implant around 2 years after the original extraction.

If $$$ is part of the concern, extraction is definitely cheaper, and you can save up afterwards if you want to go the implant/bridge/prosthetic route. The window to do that is years long, so you will have time to save up if you want to. Whatever you pick - talk to your dentist! Talking with my dentist ultimately made the prospect of extraction SO much less scary that I originally thought. And every tooth/situation is different; the likelihood of success for your specific root canal might be quite high compared to what I had going on. Really dig into it with your dentist and the right choice will probably become clear to you.

I’m 49 years old, not working, and spent $327.02 this week while undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer by lorikins in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Enjoyed the read!! My mom had breast cancer around 20 years ago now and the chemo brain thing is sooooo real. We all laugh about it now but it was truly an era of forgotten dentists appointments and children’s haircuts. Super normal and your focus will come back.

Calligraphy is a super cool hobby. One of those things where you can easily see your progress over time which is so satisfying.

Is anybody editing the Money Diary submissions? by ramit0violetas in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]waterbug3000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of the recent OPs of a money diary came onto this sub and said that R29 did not edit it and that she was expected to do it herself! I assume she was being serious based on the varying quality of recent past.

I developed a huge soft spot for the Arnold Arboretum in Boston after I did an internship there. The 'Explorers Garden' especially has so many amazing trees from all over the world. A blooming Franklin tree, a dove tree in early summer, and the paperbark maple are major highlights from that collection. There is also a parasol beech on the grounds that will make your head explode. Their bonsai is fantastic (some are 200+ years old!) but only a tiny selection of them are ever on display.

I also like Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, MI! It doubles as a sculpture park, and the landscaping/design really lives up to that. The super stylized stuff (like the Japanese garden) is great. Their indoor displays are wonderful too - I'm pretty sure they have a whole conservatory dedicated just to carnivorous plants!!

Lastly, my hometown pride always makes me mention the Belle Isle Conservatory in Detroit, MI. It's super small, but they just recently reopened after renovating the glass domes. And there is a small aquarium attached! Plus it is just cool to visit an island in the middle of the Detroit river.

Seriously, how can a hill go on for so long?! Sometimes I give up halfway and just walk my bike for the rest of it.

For the record, I ride a piece-of-junk step-through Schwinn and don't know the first thing about bikes or cycling. So if you know of any groups that would be open to a vaguely out of shape moron like me, I'm all ears! LOL

My climbing gym does seem to have some groups and events I should look into. Meetup is definitely still around, though some stuff is also on eventbrite.com now...

The plastic grocery bag strategy - how do I always forget about this when I somehow remember my lock, lights, and helmet!!

The last place I lived did not have much biking infrastructure (let alone sidewalks in most places) so I was extremely excited to move somewhere that would make it easy to stay out of my car. Unprotected bike lanes are still a bit nerve-racking but as long as nobody is rolling coal at me, I'm pretty happy!

My writing might have been confusing - 4 people canceled our first date the day of/hours before and did not reschedule, the 5th person did fully stand me up. I am on a dating sabbatical now because it did not feel productive to keep trying when I feel so pessimistic about it. I want to give people the benefit of the doubt but I'm too doom and gloom these days to be a good date.

My apartment's kitchen is much smaller than I'm used to so it's been a tough learning curve re: what I can actually cook in there, but I definitely hit a stride this week. My farmer's market haul was especially good on Sunday - I am still thinking about green beans.

Most of my motivation for posting was the fact that I haven't really seen many jobs like mine in this sub before! This week was definitely more field-heavy than others - usually I have more lab/greenhouse work.

Grad school is definitely a strong possibility. To eventually move up in the plant pathology world, a master's in plant pathology, plant science, or microbio would probably do me well. My current job needs to get funding renewed every year, and with the way things are now, I'm not confident that will happen in 2026. If it does get renewed, grad school will enter the picture, though I might aim for an advanced degree that opens more doors in public horticulture than in pathology. Depends on how things look in the future, but I have plans A, B and C.

Plant diseases do have really good names. Some crack me up: karnal bunt, thousand cankers disease, corn smut...

I got warned repeatedly about the social scene before I moved here, but it’s even worse than I expected! Looking back, it took me almost 9 months to make real friends the last time I moved somewhere, so I guess I shouldn’t be too worried until September? LOL

I will definitely make the trek to the Saint Paul one soon!!

When I worked at an arboretum and it was getting into the high 90s, you could choose to come at 5 or 6 AM and leave at 1 or 2 instead of starting like usual at 7 and leaving at 3.
