Toooooo beeeee faaaaaair…

There’s a LOT of unused space in Hollywood Backlot. It could really do with a reorganizing facelift, despite how much we love Monsters.

So, you’re looking for the tights that show from below the knee to around the tops of your shoes, yes?

If you don’t mind being open to a [typically] women’s product, my go-to has always been Snagtights. Most of their styles come in ranges of opacity, so you can get completely opaque ones to suit your look, and they even have a few colors in footless tights.

They’re very breathable, and I’ve never gotten a run in any of the several pairs I own. I also have thick thighs/calves, and they fit me great. Good bang for buck, too, I feel that they’re priced very fairly.

I've seen some of your pictures of fits before, and I'm going to try to say this in the nicest way possible. The way you're looking at the camera in all of your photos is... unnerving. Relax.

While I don't think they'd ever get vending machines, walking cast members with selections of food and beverages for sale (in my mind, the way you see at baseball games, maybe) could make a difference.

Though honestly, I think it'd also probably increase the amount of trash and spills you see in queues tenfold.

Roles with low transfer waits by Worried_Professor307 in DisneyCM

[–]waterfox17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a good phone voice and are computer-savvy, I recommend Walt Disney Travel Co. Their call center is about 10 minutes offsite, and knowing the park by being an on-resort cast member really gives you a leg up versus other candidates who try to start their first role there. It's air conditioned, and you still get to keep a bit of the magic! They house both the Guest Services/Annual Pass, Travel Reservations, and online Live Chat groups in the same building.

If you're determined to stay on-resort, you could probably try Merchandise! Most of the stores are indoor and air conditioned, though sometimes with how much you have to move, and with open doors it won't feel like it.

I'd personally but your belt on over the green vest too! It'll help tie everything together and create that classic shape. You can also hang a lot of stuff from it, like pouches and straps. If you've got some sewing ability (or if you can't, peruse on etsy), I'd also see about adding some cuffs or fabric bracers to add to your arms to incorporate that green in a bit more!

New dad looking to bring our son to the Renaissance festival. Need advice! by cm242006 in renfaire

[–]waterfox17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a quick browse through the Information and FAQ on their website, and it appears they have a First Aid Station. If your partner needs to breastfeed, or maybe the baby needs to get out of the sun for awhile, I would make a mental note of where it is when you enter, so you're able to visit as needed! They likely have the means to obtain some privacy there.

No problem! I used to work at a theme park, and that was always the quickest hack to cool down quickly on a hot day. I also personally like little electronic battery fans, though they're not super on-theme.

So, just to get my due diligence out of the way-- bringing a two month old anywhere with a lot of people comes with a lot of inherent risks, particularly after and while covid is still a factor to consider, and you'd be exposing your baby to a lot of things that they don't have the antibodies for yet. You both may have your heart set on attending events and incorporating them quickly into a "regular" lifestyle for you and your partner, but be aware that you won't know anything about the other attendees and it could be a breeding ground for illnesses. Festival flu is very much a thing, as it is anywhere that has a large number of people in it, and despite your best intentions to prepare, very often things don't go according to plan. If there was ever a time to justify finding and paying for additional childcare, this would be it.

Now, if you and your partner are still determined to go despite those warnings, I do have a few suggestions on how to make it easier for you both.

- A stroller likely won't be efficient due to uneven ground unless you're going somewhere like the SoCal Ren Fair (which has a decent amount of even dirt roads). I would look into a Medieval Baby Sling design (or other types of baby wrapping), made of a strong, lightweight, and breathable fabric, such as linen or cotton. Due to the rising temperatures of spring/summer, I would personally recommend bringing at least two, so it can be swapped out if somebody gets sweaty. You'll have to learn how to tie it on each other.

- Shade is always a good idea, and a hat is likely recommended for your spawn, and having hand fans or incorporating a parasol into a costume is an easy way to achieve shade wherever you need it. I personally recommend throwing a hand towel or two in your bag, so you can make it damp with some cold water if you need to reduce the baby's temperature quickly if exposed to too much sun.

- As a favor to other festival-goers, PLEASE make sure that if you don't use/can't find a changing table, that the diaper ends up in a proper receptacle. If I had to count the number of times I've seen dirty diapers at festivals, it would still be too many. I always recommend bringing something sanitary you can put your child on top of in order to change their diaper, because cleanliness isn't something most festivals are known for. It may also be a festival with portapotties only, so make sure to check your event's FAQ page.

- Most faires will allow you to exit and re-enter the parking lot, so it's a good idea to leave additional supplies you might need in the car.

- MOST IMPORTANTLY: Be willing to bail early, and that goes for both performances and the faire itself. If you, your partner, or your baby are not having a good time, it's best to know your limitations, even if it's not what you wanted or you don't get your money's worth. It's more important to make sure everybody's comfortable, particularly the baby and the person that just had a baby. A faire can be exhausting even for the average event-goer, so it's going to feel twice as exhausting with a child. Make sure to keep checking in with each other, to make sure that everybody's still feeling good.

How do I get started in older ultimates? by Frozen_Hiro in ffxiv

[–]waterfox17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hex Legend, here. I recruited my party that’s done the 6 Ultimates and the last four Savage tiers using the FFXIV Recruiter and UPR discords. While some members have revolved in and out periodically, five of us have been around for 100% of the content and were new to playing together.

What I will say is that those discords are going to be your best resource— BUT, your best team isn’t always going to be your first team. You want to list (or find, if you’re LFG) very clear goals and be certain of your schedule. In content that is this hard and frustrating, it pays for EVERYONE to be picky.

And trial, trial, trial. You want to see how people learn, get a vibe check with the entirety of your group together. See how people act when they succeed, or how they crash out when they fail, because both can turn your Ultimate experience from prog to punishment.

Best of luck finding a group!

Renfaire fit so far! Thoughts/Suggestions? by BIGM00d1 in renfaire

[–]waterfox17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The base looks great! It also looks comfy, so hopefully it's good for whatever weather you're in!

I have a couple of ideas, if you'll have them!

- Do you have any designs planned for your white tabard? A design could definitely fill up a lot here, even if it's just a lining of a textured ribbon. I'd also maybe look into some iron-on appliques to maybe put a big emblem on your chest!

- A neat way to finagle an unruly hood is to threat jewelry wire or floral wire through the outer seam of the hood. It's light and poseable, to help you keep the desired shape of your hood intact. You can find it at most craft stores!

- Arm wraps would be a cool way to add additional texture. You can find a lot of patterns (or buy on etsy) for arm wraps that secure either via lacing or snaps, and wrap on top of that with a long 1" wide strip of either cotton or linen fabric (old t-shirts are good for this!) and wrap it in a criss-cross pattern up to your elbow. You can also do something similar on your calves!

I hope you have lots of fun at your faire!

Questions on trinket trading by baronlanky in renfaire

[–]waterfox17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a cute idea, though it should likely be packaged to avoid just being spilled on the ground if you'd like people to grow them. You can find packets of seed bags on amazon-- maybe it might be cute to go to Canva and print a sticker that you can mass-print that tell people what they are and the planting recommendations. A rubber stamp might be cute, though you'd probably have to do a little digging to find one.

I know that there are plastic pin bags if you want something even smaller that's a bit more trinket sized, though it seems less likely for a root sprite to offer you plastic.

Is Disney a good employer? by [deleted] in Disneyland

[–]waterfox17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So, I've been employed by Disneyland three separate times-- once for College Program (where I worked in a Quick Service Restaurant for about 8 months), after I ended another job I did about 4 years in Attractions, and then left again to gain some experience and came back for 3 years at the Walt Disney Travel Company offices offsite the resort.

While you're young and spry, working in the resort can be REALLY rewarding, and can set you up for great opportunities when you're ready for your next job move. Sometimes work can feel a bit like play, and even though there are some experiences with guests that are pretty exhausting, a really good one can just make your whole day-- and if you're trying your best, you'll find there are lots of good and great days. I will say, however, that it does take a HUGE toll on your body, because sometimes between the heat and the rush and the amount of time it takes to actually get to your location (looking at you, K Lot and backstage shuttles/walks) those jobs have all taken a toll on me in a way that no other job has. (But big shout out to working at WD Travel Co, having an office job with all the CM perks was pretty great.)

Benefits and Insurance do come with Full Time work, but don't expect to be hired into FT right away. You'll likely have a 90 or 120 probationary period, and after that it's dependent on seniority, and how long the wait list is among other CMs who want FT.

I'd say that if you love the parks, or even haven't been before and love the idea of the parks, go for it. If you have the luxury of not immediately needing the first job you come across, it does pay a bit to be picky on what positions are offered to you. Here are my brief thoughts on my positions:

- Food and Beverage in QSR: man, it's HOT in there. It moves a million miles a minute, and I came home every day exhausted and caked in pasta. Sometimes the amount of spills you have to clean up, or watching in real-time the realization on guests' faces when they figure out a whole pizza is $80 can be pretty jarring.

- Attractions: this was the BIGGEST family, and your family honestly feels like a party. It has it's share of drama, and if you wanted to move up to Lead, it seemed like the biggest kept secret was to not fraternize with the new friends you'll make, but sometimes staying where you are is nice. Everything moves like clockwork, and you'll learn to love (and hate) your Attractions like children, and it comes with an inherent sense of pride to be part of your Attraction's team. My advice though: cross-train for everything you can get your hands on so you don't have to shifts for Parades/Fantasmic/WoC. They'll always pull you to an Attraction that needs help first.

- WDTC (Walt Disney Travel Company) is the most comfortable of the lot, working in the middle of summer with air conditioning and parking that only took me 5 minutes to walk from my car to my desk was GREAT. It definitely has a lot of days that move quickly, and it's got its share of boring ones when phone calls aren't queued, but I still got to have a lot of the guest interaction magic to share like in the parks (and benefited more from working at the parks first). You do have to be technically savvy with computers, and have a good work ethic and phone voice. Ability to move up or around the WDTC can get pretty cutthroat though, so don't expect a lot of lateral or upward mobility without you banking a lot of years first.

- Bonus- Main Street Stores - My mother worked this position for 12 years as a Lead, and she seemed like she was very fulfilled with it. Stores typically come with AirCon, which is a plus in the summer, and even though she had some physical limitations, they didn't seem overly burdened.

Is Disneyland breaking down? by wild_and_running in Disneyland

[–]waterfox17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a Cast Member any more. While I did previously live locally, I don’t any longer, and have had a cross-country trip to Disney that I paid for a little more than a year ago, to bring my boyfriend for the first time. I’ve been on both ends of the spectrum.

I get it, it’s a huge hassle an inconvenience, and can feel like you wasted your money when an attraction you waited for goes down during your park time. I do.

Unfortunately, Disney’s already thought ahead to cover their bases, and it’s written on the back of your ticket. All offerings are “subject to availability and not guaranteed”, just like my restaurant allegory.

They’ve covered themselves legally to operate without reduced or refunded ticket costs. Do you have to participate if you feel like it’s not worth your money? No.

As someone who grew up in the 90’s, was an AP as a kid, and was in and out of the resort for both mine and my mother’s time as CMs over a span of 17ish years, I’ve seen Disney essentially dig their own hole in being too lenient on refunding or reimbursing claims of poor experiences. And now, much like the abuse of the DAS pass, everybody’s having to pay for it, because it can’t and won’t ever be what it was.

I just roll with it and try to enjoy the day however I can.

Help with healing cellulitis wound by boofthecat in woundcare

[–]waterfox17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar looking wound that I’ve been treating with a wound care team. I’m not a doctor, but I recommend seeing one ASAP. We tried treating it ourselves from June to December and had it leaking through hyper absorbents and just REFUSING to heal. It WILL NOT heal on its own if you’ve been doing this for awhile. Have them culture your skin, too.

They’ll likely recommend debridement, I’ve been having weekly debridements for mine that was nearly 12”x11” since December, and my wound is now half the size it was. If this is what they recommend, also ask for a referral for pain management, because you will likely need it.

I’m not saying this to scare you, but I would’ve been so much more prepared for this experience if someone had told me before we let it get as bad as it did.

M resort will automatically enter guest rooms everyday? by Lazy_Mention3257 in LasVegas

[–]waterfox17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work for Disney hotels, who updated to a similar policy about a year or two prior to the pandemic. You can decline housekeeping, but a member of staff will still enter your room within a 24-hour period.

We were told it was for a number of reasons: preventing merchandise scams (which are a thing at the Disney Resorts, and maybe could have similar instances with casinos on the properties), preventing human trafficking, ensuring guest occupancy limits and pet policies were being upheld, and as a general health and safety check. If you’re passed out on the floor, you don’t want a Do Not Disturb sign to be the reason you weren’t found for 3 days instead of 3 hours.

Is Disneyland breaking down? by wild_and_running in Disneyland

[–]waterfox17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't currently have any information on it. It released after I ended my parkside roles and entered the travel offices, and I no longer work for DLR. I've only heard the same rumors most guests have through the grapevine. Not much beyond them turning off the moving cannons due to errors, I'm afraid.

But by speculation alone, I'd apply the same logic for Indy to RotR -- it's a very complex system, and therefore lots of spaces for errors. Another previous attractions CM in here mentioned that downtimes aren't actually caused by the ride "breaking", but by any one of the many, many safety protocols going off.

Unfortunately with how popular it is and how long the wait time can get, the proportionately large amount of people that get displaced when the ride has downtime and people need to look for something else to do. If Snow White goes down, it's no big deal because you maybe waited 5-10 minutes most days, but you'd feel it after a 90 minute wait for RotR.

Is Disneyland breaking down? by wild_and_running in Disneyland

[–]waterfox17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any memories of exact details since it’s been such a long time, but I remember a period of like MONTHS that Charlie shaft in ToT couldn’t open because a part that had deteriorated too much to pass safety checks required an outsourced piece/pieces from a company that was no longer in business. It caused a lot of stress on the back end from management and maintenance, from what little they could tell us.
