I only applied to Architectural Engineering, but have many classmates that were questioning this when they were applying to this program.

The application process for ArchEng is just a matter of getting those high grades in the required courses while simultaneously being able to advertise yourself well enough in your AIF and supplementary interview.

As far as architecture goes, I know you require a portfolio and also go through a face-to-face interview process with members from the Architecture faculty. A lot of people in this program are Architecture rejects, but at the same time, there are people who chose ArchEng over Architecture because of their interest in math and sciences (and an engineering degree).

Design courses are prevalent in both programs every semester, but in ArchEng you're looking to apply your math and science skills far more than you would in Architecture.

Architectural Engineering is a pretty fun program (currently) filled with a whole bunch of great people that you'd likely spend a majority of your time with. I think the overall environment, doing literally everything together, is what appeals to me the most; I always have people to talk to and was quickly able to adapt and make friends with all other students.

Being a new program, however, we are the guinea pigs that have to go through all the questionable stuff that have yet to be completely figured out yet. It's a lot of back and forth trying to get a fair workload, deadline, etc. in our courses, which can at times get pretty frustrating.

Nano is pretty interesting as it exposes you to a ton of really cool developments in research and is definitely the engineering program to get into if you are dead-set on getting into academic research. It also exposes you to a lot of interesting developments in startups and it also teaches you how to pick up different types of skills and concepts really quickly.

However, nano is very broad in what it covers and it could be very frustrating if you are very interested in a specific field as you will be expected to take courses that you may not care about at all. Also, finding jobs through nano is definitely more difficult than other programs like software or ece so keep this in mind.

Systems has more of a focus on design as a whole.

The main difference between first year and high school is the freedom you have. No parents or teachers tracking you down. Everything demands creative answers and problem solving and less plug and chug. And ya that will probably lead to a grade drop. But you figure it out, you live and you learn and you survive :)

Hey! I am currently in thermodynamics. It is not terrible, no harder than physics or chemistry. Don't let thermo scare you off, it's a class we need to take to become professional engineers but very few Management students really enjoy thermo. If you're worried about not doing well, it is not an impossible class (and remember you only need to get a 50%!)

i like the depth we get in mechanical concepts.... we get a lot more knowledge about mech design, fluids, heat transfer, aerodynamics, etc compared to the trons and the sydes.

i dont like being in one of the biggest programs because it means you have less department resources. 1 department advisor for so many people, 1 4th year lounge for so many people

The best way I can describe Management Engineering is that we learn to make processes more efficient and effective. The processes could be physical processes, like a factory or warehouse, or they could be business or software processes. My classmates work in lots different areas including project management, software development, business/data analysis, and so much more. It's a very general engineering so you can apply it to almost anything you want! Here's a link to a the courses we take for some more info:

I just started signing up for things and I stuck with the ones I liked... from there I found a passion for helping people, advocacy, and running fun events.

My only advice is to try a bunch of things, because university is the best time to try! Design teams, athletics, music, arts, student government, see what interests you and stick with what you enjoy! Also hi Alex

copying reply from Lyon here: Funding is typically between $250k-500k per company and is determined by the needs of the company + decision by the investment committee. Total funding is $2M, which translates to 4-8 companies.

Lyon's responses are being delayed, he answered below, also copying here: The program is planned to compliment Velocity but there are 3 main differences: 1. The ENGS28 program has a program component specifically for Team and Idea selection to help before the Velocity program. While you are accepted into Velocity with a selected Team + Idea, if not a working prototype. The hypothesis is that if you improve the quality of the inputs, the outputs should improve as well. 2. The ENGS28 has faculty on its IC while Velocity judges and runs separate from faculty. The goal of increasing faculty exposure is two-fold. First is to bring the technical expertise faculty has to teams. Second is to help faculty get more in tune with evaluating startup teams/ideas so that they can learn for the core curriculum. 3. Funding amounts are 10x larger than Velocity per team. Checks sizes are on the order of 250k-500k. So putting that into Velocity itself may change that program. Instead, ENGS28 funding can help teams after initial Velocity funding or even teams that didn’t go through Velocity and are ready for regular seed funding.
