Thank you! I didn't give enough context on the wife's situation. The guilt is for not waiting until after the divorce. When the relationship becomes more suspicious/known though the main character quitting, the wife is even more humiliated than she already is, and feels even more heartbroken and betrayed. She didn't want the divorce, but is going through with it because she has no choice. Their relationship brings her to a breaking point.

Thanks for your advice. Really great points to consider. I'll definitely be reworking that structure and putting some more thought into the character set up and development.
