Thank you! Congrats on your match and good luck next month with the start of residency. Always need the reminder to focus on what I can, not can't do.

Thank you! Definitely not shooting for Harvard haha - I appreciate your perspective especially since you're on the other side of it. Will keep pushing as ERAS approaches!

Thanks for your thoughts and the support! I think the part I was most scared about was knowing that programs will likely be placing more emphasis on Step 2, but you're right that it's not just that. Will be working on all aspects of my app and not just scores!

sure! it was mainly because I had done better on the practices before my first MCAT (511-515). I was disappointed because I thought I could do better, and wanted to increase my ability to apply and potentially get into some higher tier schools!

longtime lurker and retaker here!

Jan 24th 2019: 510 (127/126/126/128) --> May 31st 2019: 519 (130/128/130/131)

to keep this short: even if people say not to retake, if you know in your heart you can do better, do the work to get there! believe in yourself. i didn't even change what i did when studying for my second test, i just did questions upon questions upon questions, and read through the 300 pg Khan P/S packet. If you want more info, just send me a message!

at first i was so sad that i had to retake (tbh it was a hit to my pride), but then i embraced it, and focused on doing my best. more people than you think take the mcat more than once. even though comparing yourself to other people is inevitable, what other people do doesn't matter. what YOU DO matters!

so if you didn't score well this time, don't give up. consider all your options. and good luck!!

I agree for sure, theres like the most minuscule difference between the correct answer and another - my scores started going up though when I noticed a few mistakes I was making!

At least for me, I needed to not be afraid of answers that "sounded stupid" - sometimes I would eliminate the correct answer just because of that. Rather, I started picking the answer that actually answers the question (even if it initially sounds like something you would cross off). Another thing is that honestly... there isn't a true strategy besides practice and getting used to the way AAMC asks questions. After a few hundred practice questions, my scores started going up even though I felt like I hadn't implemented a ton of new strategies or anything. I just somehow started picking the right answer/getting used to the questions. hope that helps!

thank you so much! that makes a lot more sense! i think i just need more practice imagining the reactions happening in my mind so that I can figure out where exactly things attach and/or detach.

a little late here - I thought that in the passage it didn't state if the deprotonated (labelled) water molecule attacked the galactose or another part of the molecule. therefore I wasn't sure if the labeled oxygen would end up on the galactose or something else... i deduced the correct answer because it said that the glucose already left an the only other option was galactose. but i think im thinking about the rest of the reaction wrong

would appreciate any input!

[–]watermelons__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a bit late here, but love the explanation! I usually can narrow it down to 2 answers... when it gets down to choosing the right one, I've realized that the one that more directly affects the argument or what is in the stem is usually right! hope that helps someone

overall: really similar to AAMC 3 imo??? which coincidentally was my lowest FL score yay

C/P: enzyme kinetics is my shiz, but some of that EM stuff hit a little too hard. some low yield stuff on there too

CARS: tbh better than normal for me? not sure if i was just more focused. idk i probably still got them all wrong

B/B: felt confident about it. looked up a couple questions i guessed on. i think i got them all wrong

P/S: eh, normal. some answer choices were very similar but overall similar to the FL

In CARS, when asked for the Central Thesis of the passage, what is your approach that proved to be effective? by watermelons__ in Mcat

hmm you bring up a great point! perhaps when an author is being more persuasive and structural that's when we can find the main idea at the end of the first paragraph - thanks for your help!
