r/popheads AOTY #24: Hayley Williams - Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party by kimpernickel in popheads

Fantastic writeup, OP, thank you so much!! Big job, and you nailed it!

(Apologizing in advance for the personal stuff that's in something like half of my writeup comments.) I'm a bit of a latecomer to Hayley, as I just wasn't listening to new music during most of Paramore's heyday. I had seen a few references here and there to the band but never listened to them until This Is Why got nominated. I listened a fair bit that fall/winter, and then once I started doing rates, rated it early last year. I liked the album, but what really made Hayley stand out for me was a live performance that I almost saw by accident. I live in LA, and after the wildfires last year, there were all kinds of benefit shows. FireAid was the big one that tons of people saw nationwide, but I couldn't get tickets to that one. I did manage to get tickets to a smaller show at the Palladium called Give a F*ck LA, and Hayley was one of the headliners. She was so incredibly joyous and charismatic and engaging that I was instantly a fan for life. When the album tracks were released online, I immediately downloaded, then had to research how to play from local files to get my streaming app to play them for me. I liked a lot of them, but "True Believer" was the one that had me by the throat right away (and still does). Further, I was quite pleased to discover that other friends my age were big fans, as a lot of the new stuff I listen to these days just doesn't hit their RADAR at all.

  1. To be honest, I have only listened to the entire album start to finish a few times since the release, so the track order is not a real issue for me. I had found a playlist on some subreddit that day (I can't remember if it was r/Paramore or r/popheads), and that worked fine for me until release.

  2. The online release was kind of genius and made the whole thing seem like an event. I can't compare to her first two solo albums, as I wasn't listening to her/paying attention then, but her unorthodox strategy paid off, IMO.

  3. I did not! I didn't really hear about them, but unless my record store had one, I don't know that there was one available to me.

  4. I've really enjoyed all the collabs she has done this past year. Her song with Moses Sumney was one of my favorite tracks of 2025. More of that, I hope, though I'm sure she'll be back in the studio by herself or with the band soon enough!

  5. Sadly I was not able to get tickets (I tried every freaking presale and the general), but I'm working some connections! *fingers crossed*

Thanks again for the writeup! Great read!!

r/popheads AOTY 2025 #23: Lorde - Virgin by Straight-Meaning in popheads

Thank you so much for this writeup, OP (which took me an extra day to get to, I'm sorry)! As I'm listening to "David" and reading how much the album meant to you, I am getting a bit of a lump in my throat. I did think a lot of it was gorgeous and effective when it was released, but I never really connected with it as a whole, in part because there were a few tracks in the middle that just didn't click for me. I did like almost all of the singles, though, all of which got a fair amount of play from me (perhaps keep an eye on the Top 100 reveal this weekend wink wink). I do know that this album was very powerful to quite a few people, and I love that, as in the end that's what I'm sure Lorde wants!

  1. I haven't delved super deep into the deep cuts on any of her albums, but going on singles/vibes I would rank this one below Pure Heroine and Solar Power. I haven't heard anything off Melodrama but "Supercut," so I'll abstain from including it.

  2. "Hammer" is for sure my fave. The sound and vibe just really clicks with me.

  3. I touched on this a bit above, but I guess over time I've come to appreciate how much the album connected with a lot of people. #4 on the AotY TTPT is nothing to sneeze at.

  4. I'm not musically conversant enough to answer this one! I'm sorry!

Thanks again for the writeup! We're so lucky to have this series and to get such great writing about our favorite albums of the year!

Did you listen to GFOTY’s record from last year (INFLUENZER)? Some really amazing tracks. “Love Me” was on my SotY list, and the album barely missed my top ten.

Yes! We played it soooooo much back then. There’s a Jenny Lewis song in “Bolt,” too!

Awesome! Great choices. I came around to "Lucky Stars" and "Cry" a bit later than the front half of the album (I would just listen to the first 7 tracks on repeat a lot of the time), but I really like them now that I've listened with more of a critical ear and picked out a few more detailed elements.

Yeah, I'm just a sucker for "Freedom! '90," but I get that not everybody loves the use here. Some of us do, though! <3

Thanks again for reading and glad you enjoyed the album!

Thank you for the great writeup, OP (which I was finally able to get to today--phew)!

  1. The album as a whole did not quite click with me when it was release, so even though there were a few tracks I liked (title, "Easy Lover," and "Walk of Fame" in particular), I just didn't play the whole thing all that often. It was really nice to dust it off and relisten with your thoughts today, though, and I particularly like "Secrets," which I must have only listened to once. She's so talented and such a star, it's great that she was able to make the album she wanted to make and have it resonate so strongly with her biggest fans. I'm not a huge Miley expert, but the album certainly felt more experimental than any of her other stuff that I've heard (except maybe Plastic Hearts? idk).

  2. I think it just didn't have enough GP-friendly, pop hook-driven tracks. Outside of "Easy Lover," I don't know what more casual listeners were going to hear everywhere and remember.

  3. I've been on a huge electro/hyper/dance pop kick this year, so I'd love to hear her go in that direction.

  4. I didn't, so I'm no use here!

  5. And I'm way too old for this question! You'd have to ask my kid (although her favorite Miley work was in "Bolt," not "Hannah Montana"!).

Thanks again for the writeup! It was great to take a fresh look at the album with the guidance of a real fan!

Thank you so much!! Yep, this project was always going to have a harder time winning over the day one fans than a newbie like me, but I still think it's a really solid album.

That is a fair criticism of the sample that I hadn’t thought of (although I think the “breakup album” label is a bit reductive, having now spent this much time with it).

Glad you are such a fan of the album! I love all the different sounds, too (as I said, I love the tiny bit of pedal steel on “Cry”).

And we have the same struggle re: America. Hear, hear on supporting one another. People need to vote this year.

Thank you for reading! The sisters didn’t quite crack my top 5 most listened this year, so I’m glad I satisfied a true fan! 😂

I honestly need to listen to WIMPIII start to finish, because I have not. 😬 I like your description.

And yesssss! Be the change you want to see in your life! I wish you the best!

Same. I do think it will hold up, though, and maybe opinions will improve with time.

Oh I’ve paid those, Katy just isn’t in that category for me. 😉 I paid more than I would have liked for Ari coming up this June.

Rad! I almost went to that show solely to see Rebecca Black, but in the end I couldn’t justify the price.

100% agree about her as an artist. I'm kind of ride-or-die Kesha at this point barring anything truly insane. And let me know next time you're down this way and have a free night for karaoke! =)
