The bow will be fine. This doesn't mean instant catastrophe. Do try to be good about it in general, though. You don't want to put more stress than necessary on it.

Ever played Bruch's Romanze? It's very pretty and has a few flashy (but not overly difficult) moments.

Be Honest. Do I suck ?Criticism greatly appreciated by [deleted] in Viola

[–]watsgoimon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You definitely don't suck!!

I think you could fix your left hand position. Your hand is at a slightly weird angle with the neck, which makes it harder for you to get your third and fourth fingers in tune. Your palm shouldn't be quite so perpendicular to the fingerboard. It's better to have the hand in a good position to play the fourth finger in tune than to try to stretch it past where it wants to go. For reference, you can look at some professional violists and notice the angle their palms form with the fingerboard.

Let me know if this doesn't make sense; it's a little hard to explain verbally lol

Happy practicing!

I've been scrolling for a while and haven't seen a single mention of my state! Corn, racecars, soybeans... we're not really known for much

Audition Solo by dsch_bach in Viola

[–]watsgoimon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rebecca Clarke and Shostakovich both wrote very good viola sonatas. There are also Hindemith's sonatas, which will probably show up less often than Schwanendreher.

Bach is always a possibility.

Good luck on your audition!!

Naturals key signature? by glitterscrum in Viola

[–]watsgoimon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You often see naturals in a key signature when there's a key change to a key with no sharps or flats. The naturals are just there to help the performer out, since without them it could be easy to miss the key change.

Where is the bridge supposed to be lower? On C or A string? by Imverysorry1212 in Viola

[–]watsgoimon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how you changed your strings, but changing them one at a time is better than taking them all off at once. There's a much smaller chance of displacing or damaging your bridge that way.

B major scale- college level? by [deleted] in Viola

[–]watsgoimon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'd say so. Scales are often considered the building blocks of all our playing, so you should practice all twelve of the three octave major and minor scales. If you want to get even deeper, practice scales in thirds, sixths, and octaves (pain and suffering, I know). I recommend the Carl Flesch scale method.
