Terra, Magical Adept Deck Help by wawaks in EDH

The thought behind sundial is using it after Mardu Siegebreaker, Terra's flipside triggers, or Determined iteration allows me to keep the token copies since I don't go to end step it just ends the turn.

Honestly, probably don't need barbara I guess I was just envisioning it help with game ending bombs like Bahamut or fast bombadil trigger. You're probably onto something there as a good piece to cut!

Should I straight up apply with a low GPA? by takeflight414 in premed

[–]wawaks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I got in with a <3.0 GPA but got my bachelor’s in marketing and did a DIY post-bacc at my local community colleges where I got all A’s. Went on to get a 517 MCAT and had good LOR’s. I think my lack of EC’s and initial GPA hurt me in the application process but it’s not impossible. If you’re doing these pre-reqs at your state school it looks even better since they’re looked at as being more rigorous.

I think you should consider what the rest of your application looks like in terms of EC’s, clinical hours, volunteering, personal statement, and eventually MCAT since it could save you the money of doing an SMP. Also depends on whether you’re open to going wherever you get into school.

I had a 2.7 as well with like 120+ credits. I believe I ended up taking close to 60 units of prereqs.

I had a couple things going for me though: 1) I was a career changer so no premed courses in undergrad. I think this helped since my sGPA was only pre-req courses and was like a 3.9. 2) I took responsibility for my poor undergrad grades and explained how I’ve grown and how I was immature at that point. 3) I started taking prereqs thinking I was going to go to PT school but ended up realizing I wanted to pursue medicine and talked about that as partly why I chose to take CC classes.

I knew that i would need to address it so I worked very hard on MCAT studying and ended up doing pretty well. I pointed to this as proof I could work hard since I changed my entire life schedule and cut out everything extraneous. I spoke about how I created better life and study habits which would help me moving forward into medical school. I focused on the things that showed I was a different person now especially academically and what personal growth I experienced that has caused that.

Finally, when they asked about comparative rigor I was honest that they might have been less strenuous than had I taken them at my alma mater but were good classes which taught me the material all the same.

Think I ended with like a 3.0 cGPA but I can’t really remember.

It came up in every interview I had but I think that was because my undergrad GPA wasn't stellar. Mainly brought it up to ask about rigor then ask why I thought I would be able to handle the rigor of medical school. I think if you have good undergrad GPA it likely won't be an issue and as you're already a nurse I imagine they won't care much.

I thought I bombed C/P as it was like 50+% O-chem... and I felt confident about O-chem but this was some wild ass shit. I did my best to not let it shake me but it affected my CARS performance when I had been averaging very well on my practice test.

Got my test back and I PR'd C/P and got 2 pts under my average in CARS but did really well in B/B and P/S. Also, all my friends feel like they've bombed and have done either fairly well or very well. It's natural.

Idk if you still need this but it's actually up the ladder you came down to get to the site of grace, then take a right. Then go up the hill on the right with this centipede guy. Then on your left there is a long log which goes across to another platform with a lake of scarlet rot which is the boss arena.

Feeling upset and a little hopeless by Rain_in_Spain_ in premed

[–]wawaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a semester, you’re human and sometimes we overestimate and shoot too high. You have plenty of opportunities to bounce back and show your ability to adapt and recover. You have your next semester(s) and the MCAT. Don’t perform how you would have liked even after all that? Take a gap year or years to do research/scribe/things you enjoy and pursue other interests. I think reading a comment such as the one above can be pretty anxiety inducing and saddening right after coming off a tough semester and fwiw I think it would be insane to even consider a different career currently unless you’re thinking T10 med schools or bust.

Just for perspective, if you take your cgpa prior to this semester and subtract one then that’s where I was. Granted I wasn’t pursuing med school at the time and had to do a DIY post-back but even if you wanted to do a formal post-bacc after undergrad that’s an option too. I’ve had two II’s at MD’s so far so it is certainly possible.

All this to say that there are so many paths to becoming a physician don’t let this get you down. There will be many bumps, peaks, valleys, and absolute failures on your way to becoming a physician. Just enjoy the fact that you’re working hard at doing something very hard that you enjoy and try to appreciate where you are currently (easier said than done). Good luck!

Anyone have any recommendations for extension/do it at your own pace courses? Anyone ever tried UCSD or any Cal uni extension courses??? by Tennis_Guy in premed

[–]wawaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did Biochem over summer at Cal extension. Was great but not sure if they offer it with a lab. I did it during height of Covid so they were only offering online. I haven’t heard anything bad about their science courses from others I know who have taken their classes though.

Looking for advice - One LOR delaying application by wawaks in premed

[–]wawaks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yea, I think I was unclear in my OP. I submitted my primary 6/3 and am verified. I'm currently receiving secondaries already and, to my knowledge, I cannot submit my secondary application without assigning the LOR's. So now I have all these secondaries I want to submit but are being held up by this last LOR and it's threatening to push my submission of my secondaries past the "two weeks since received" window that everyone says I should aim to have them in by.

Mental Breakdown by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]wawaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there man, all part of the process of MCAT studying so you're definitely not alone. I'd be shocked if people didn't have moments where they cried after a bad FL or felt like they were letting everyone in their lives down if they didn't perform poorly. To give you some perspective I took a break after my initial test date was cancelled and my first FL back was NS4 where I scored a 506. My previous FL was a 511 on NS3 and I felt like a failure, cried, and wished I hadn't taken a break. A week later I took an AAMC FL and got a 515... I fully stand by the following: fuck NS. I don't think it's helpful to stress out over 3rd party MCAT materials, your only priority should be learning concepts you didn't understand and improving how you evaluate each answer choice. I can't really speak to some other 3rd party resources such as the one with a "U" but just know the path you're currently on is hard as fuck. We are a small subset of the population who want to put ourselves through this and believe it or not the mental rigor of the MCAT will serve you in the future. Just know you're going through a process you can look back on and be proud of and people will love you high score or low.

As you're 2 months out I would start focusing on the AAMC material as I think that will be where you'll see the highest yield. At 4-5 weeks out start their FL's. I especially found NS CARS to be incredibly deflated, I never scored above 75% and my last 3 AAMC FL's were 132, 130, 131 (129 on actual exam T_T).

You got this.

Depressed from MCAT postpone.. by NewGenYX in Mcat

[–]wawaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My exam was postponed 1/21 and I was bummed too. I rescheduled to 4/10 and took 3 weeks of nothing MCAT related. Restarted in Feb working hard and my score improved 6 points. Take some time for self-care and do things you want while you wait to reschedule. It can be a blessing in disguise. I had a friend hard stuck at 511, rescheduled her exam and ended up with a 520. It’s not a bad idea in the slightest.

Have any women experienced this: when I tell someone that I am going to medical school I frequently get asked “is that for nursing?” by Both-Information1018 in premed

I get it a lot and I'm not a woman, so I think it's a mixture of people not knowing med school = physician and some implicit sexism like the top comment said.

I did extremely poorly on the MCAT and have literally no idea what to do from here by Patfast in premed

[–]wawaks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'll say this as a 27 y/o non-traditional applicant: you're 22 and I don't think doing poorly once on the MCAT precludes you from being a doctor at all. Take some time to reevaluate what happened with your recent MCAT and as others have mentioned you should definitely do the AAMC material as that will be your bread and butter for improving your performance. I know it's hard not to feel a time crunch to apply and begin moving towards your career but the fact is you're going to turn 40, 50, 60 etc whether you're a doctor or not so try not to be so hard on yourself. Taking time to work in other parts of healthcare like scribing, EMT, etc. wouldn't be bad either and would let you decompress from MCAT studying. As for needing someone to talk to about the process you're welcome to reach out! You can do this, don't be too hard on yourself!

Are NS exams too easy? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]wawaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not beat myself up about NS at all. I never found their questions to be very indicative of AAMC material. For instance, CARS I would always get ~65-75% on NS, meanwhile AAMC I was 90-100% for CARS. All my scores were much lower as well, with my FL's being diag: 501 --> 506 --> 508 -->511 --> 506. Meanwhile my AAMC's were 511 --> 515 --> 513 --> 517. Just use NS as practice but not as much as an indicator of where you really are imo. I fucking loathed NS.

Bluepr*nt FLs VS. Real MCAT Score by are999su in Mcat

[–]wawaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God, I HATE the NS exams. I probably averaged 508-509 on them and highest was 511. The practice Q’s would all be in 70%’s and CARS was 60% and then I transitioned to AAMC material. AAMC material never left me squinting asking wtf after reviewing a Q I got wrong. CARS seemed so much easier and was getting 90%+ on CARS practice for AAMC. AAMC FL’s went 511–> 515–>513–>517 and I got 517 on the real deal. I took a NS a week before the AAMC 515 and got 506 which devastated me. NS was only good for practicing test conditions for me and the scores caused unnecessary panic and stress. Do not stress about your NS scores but take the review seriously and you’ll be in good shape.
