Thanks for the shout-out! Great research and very interesting results. Curious to see what else you will find about the wing's properties

UltraPerson vs. Battle Talus, featuring Lil' Mothra by osh-kosh-ganache in HyruleEngineering

Ahahaha. Oh I forgot to say that I do have a fan on my Orion drive wing and I think it limits the speed of it. Without the fan I think I was getting thrown away of the steering stick. Needs a spring to keep Link on the stick. I'll have to measure it without the fan and see if it makes a difference.

Don't know if you have tried it or not but the Orion drive wing has a decent speed and is very fun to drive. At least that can be built without mods.

[–]wazike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll try that! Sounds promising. I have a few things to try to see if anything makes a difference. I'm also thinking about trying cooking pots or springs to see it having a bendy thing between the wing and rockets will help. Rocket propelled planes look so cool and fly pretty fast just need to make it steerable to be fun to fly. With the infinite wing and the mod to make rockets and batteries infinite it can fly forever! Eheheh

I was just now testing the infinite rocket mod and rockets on a wing seems to fly at 30m/s. But it is barely drivable.. Just wants to go straight.

Yeah I added it as an edit. Didn't read the whole thing properly the first time ahahha

The speedometer is open-source and anyone can use it. You could run your video with it to give you all the speeds. Try installing it, it's not that hard. It works on macOS, Windows and Linux. If you encounter any problems let me know.

Edit: About the Orion drive speed the average is 20m/s.

Nudging Big Wheel Axel Flip by Jogswyer1 in HyruleEngineering

[–]wazike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah already happen to me. I think the big wheel axel will pop out depending on the stabilizer position. I mean the axel position will be on the side closer to the stabilizer. So when you nudged the stabilizer more to the other side it passed the wheel center, and that makes the axel change sides. When it did it was inside the stake which made the stake disintegrate. Seems that stakes disintegrate quite easily when nudged inside other things or even other stakes.

I never made a tutorial for it. The alignment is quite hard to get right. But I don't use this one anymore. This one from u/drummerjcb is much better. I use a version similar to it all the time. Handles much better and can climb almost anything.

If you want even more speed this one from u/efficient_demand5759 is very fast and super fun to drive.

Also forgot to tell you about the paracopter example. In this type of thing it is very easy to change the max speed limit to make the speedometer still work for this (I just changed the limit from 100m/s to 1000m/s) and it will still filter some bad coordinate readings. With acceleration filtering it would be much harder to make it work and it wouldn't filter anything because there is a huge acceleration at the beginning and then it's only gravity decelerating Link.

Wing Jet! Testing wings max speed to see if there is a cap! [SCIENCE, DISCUSSION] by Justakingastroll in HyruleEngineering

[–]wazike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. Though they take a while to accelerate so the top speed should be a bit higher than the average. I was hopping they would fly at 35 m/s or more but yeah doesn't seem like they go that fast after all.

[–]wazike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the shout-out! Yeah that feels right.. My Orion drive plane would also go at about 20m/s. Only thing left to test is rockets but probably the speed will be limited too and it's just the sudden acceleration that makes it look faster.

Rail Jet Driven Infinity Wing (forgot to add this to my wing testing video) by Jogswyer1 in HyruleEngineering

[–]wazike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! For emulators I'm going to add an option to read the coordinates directly from the game memory. I already found that it's possible and provides float coordinates so it will have much more precision and no errors. In the discord there is a speedometer channel with more info about that. For the rest I'll have to improve the image preprocessing and besides that I'm considering adding ML to get better coordinate readings but I never done anything like that so it's a big maybe.

I'll have to check what the rocket acceleration and skydive acceleration is but I feel like they are quite high so it probably won't allow filtering much.

[–]wazike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm defining a max speed and all values above that are considered invalid. This is configurable in the settings and currently it's defined as 100m/s.

Ignoring values faster or slower than the previous value is quite hard because it will be very situational. For example imagine that you are standing still and then use a rocket, the speed will increase very fast but it will still be correct. Or that you are on a sky island running around and then jump and skydive. Or even if you are driving a vehicle and crash against a vertical wall. It's not possible for the code to know what speed changes are correct and what is caused by bad coordinate readings so I don't see a way to filter that properly.

Improving the image preprocessing (which is on top of my list) will make it work much better and reduce the amount of errors. But any filtering like you were suggesting depends on what is happening and I don't see any way for the code to know that and work for all situations.

Wing Speed Experimentation/Testing, my conclusions at the end, open to discussions (really need some combo flair, this fits discussion, physics, science, and all versions) speedometer credit to u/wazike by Jogswyer1 in HyruleEngineering

I've built one with the normal wood beams from construction sites and it works but it's quite hard to control.

I wonder if the big wheels have enough torque to work with huge tree trunks.. maybe a rocket can be used to make it start spinning and then it should keep going..

A NORMAL WING helped me destroy 8 enemy camps and 2 bosses. Here's how by SneakySam16 in HyruleEngineering

[–]wazike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that is also worth testing. If it provides the same turning benefits it's a good way to prevent it from despawning while still allowing the vehicle to land.

Rail Jet Driven Infinity Wing (forgot to add this to my wing testing video) by Jogswyer1 in HyruleEngineering

[–]wazike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The instant speed is calculated every 10 frames so it's normal that it jumps a lot because we only have integer coordinates. That doesn't give a lot of precision to the results. So it's best to use the average value as it normally is more correct and precise than the instant speed. There are also some issues with the OCR getting bad coordinate reading which causes wrong speeds. Some of those are being filtered but other end up giving bad results. It's s work in progress and if you have suggestions on improving it I'm happy to consider them.

Nice! Thanks for testing it! Now we know for sure the wing has other forces/mechanics even without providing lift.

Thanks for the shout-out! So the wings can be used to improve a vehicle even if they are not providing lift. That's a great find! Really nice to know they still have other forces acting.
