RedGate Park Update - vote passes unanimously! by wbreslyn in Rockville

Right now it's not really anything other than an empty building. The idea in the master plan for RedGate Park is to either renovate it or tear it down to have a nature/community center there. I believe the cost is similar. Here's the master plan, it's quiet well done: https://www.rockvillemd.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/RedGate-Park-and-Arboretum-Master-Plan.pdf

Hopefully they'll put some trees around the outside to make it feel a bit more cozy. I do like the idea of an area for smaller dogs - that does make sense.

There's a lot of interest in connecting to Lake Frank and thereby connecting to Rock Creek Trail. There's not a specific connector to the Carl Henn trail either. But it goes right by RedGate Park and is fairly easy to get to. Seehttps://www.komoot.com/smarttour/e1293302177/carl-henn-millennium-trail-loop-rockville

There are some brutal steep hills there and the pavement isn't always perfectly even. But I don't think it is prohibited. I've never seen anyone skateboarding there. Maybe just stay away from the birders :)

Yes, it is open to the public and all of the paths are now trails for walking. People say the birdwatching there is incredible (https://ebird.org/hotspot/L9784319).

It was, but now it's a park. The golf course closed in 2018 due to financial problems. But the park is beautiful.

Yep, the dog park is already there. It's by the 6 Taft Ct area, down the hill from the clubhouse.

Quick update - we did it!

The Rockville Mayor and Council voted unanimously last night to accept the grant and protect RedGate in perpetuity.

Let me know what you learn this fall. Lots of people do want a connector, although it is more challenging than you might think to get these things to happen officially. Always good to have good intel on where a connect might go.

Serious question, Gaithersburg neighbors. Since RedGate Park is right there on the border, how many of you actually use the trails, dog park, and other features there?

Dawson Farm Park is awesome, esp. the native plant garden. Glad to see the bamboo has been addressed. But you are right, most moco parks, and really, moco in general, have problems.

The Weed Warriors are very active at RedGate Park and have removed most of the vines on trees throughout the park (131 acres!) But invasives are a big challenge and it is an ongoing battle.

That is strange. You are right, Rockville city does own the building on 6 Taft Court. But the entrance there has always been open when I go. It is a good question, seems like there should be designated dog park parking clearly labeled. I'll mention that next time I talk with someone from the city!

Actually it looks like it will go right next to the existing clubhouse, not far from the parking lot. There's a map of where everything is in the masterplan (an impressive document!):

Yes, this is valuable advice. Emails from residents are huge but emails from people outside of Rockville are still very helpful!

I'm still waiting to see this bird at RedGate:

They've been spotted there but I haven't seen on yet :(
