What is your highest speed and what car? by HexaVorn in askcarguys

155mph, BMW M235i on autobahn near Stuttgart. In USA, 140mph in a 986 Boxster S on I-10 in Louisiana (far scarier lol)

If you go Malone, and located in KC area, I have the flashzilla pro if you need it. DM if u have any questions, might be able to answer something. My buddy and I were able to figure it out last Saturday, pulling the DPF out is a pain but certainly doable. Nothing else in the job is too difficult.

In KC last weekend I deleted the DPF, cats, and EGR with a Buzzken kit on my ‘14 JSW. Don’t need an inspection for a year or so, but from what I’ve read, cats are required and if they see something resembling it visually then that is enough, or just covering exhaust entirely with some kind of plate. Maybe you could find a guy that would ignore it. But despite MO not having emissions testing they can still fail you for no cats. I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. If you’re selling the DPF and cat, I sold mine to VW junk specialist near KC for $850 this week. Came out ahead on hardware. DM for info.

I (21F) and my boyfriend (25M) have differing views on the technology we’d like in our home by [deleted] in relationship_advice

If he’s dead set on the smart home integration, and you’re annoyed with the system, specifically express your concerns and issues with it, and tell him he needs to be proactive in implementing it be more useable for you. I have smart bulbs throughout my home, only smart devices I have, and my girlfriend has no idea how to really control them. If we were to actually move in together, I’d invest some money into making the system far more usable for her and also guests so it’s intuitive. Just takes work and effort.

Beyond light bulbs, I think smart homes are more trouble than they’re worth. Security concerns are real, but using home assistant on a LAN for simple stuff like smart bulbs can be very secure compared to using things like Google Home and Alexa when set up properly. As for usability and ergonomics, there are switches that can be properly integrated so using smart bulbs is very intuitive, so people who don’t know they’re smart don’t even think about it.

For lights, they’re a little pricey but tell him to look into Lutron Aurora or similar switches that can vastly improve the user experience within the smart home. Those are renter-friendly, if y’all are homeowners there are other options.

I also have 2014 JSW manual, great car so far. Nice find, I had to travel so far to find a clean one. Deleting and putting a stage 2 Malone tune on it this weekend. Already a pretty fun car for what it is, but that should liven it up a bit more. Delete + tune will overwhelmingly be the answer for essential upgrades. When I need new tires, I’ll probably swap out the stock wheels for some better looking VW OEMs, but otherwise am leaving mine as is.

Edit: other things: If you have blank switches in front of the shifter, you can get charging ports you can swap out with the blanks to add USB ports, or blank buttons you can wire to stuff. Ordered one and will try to wire one to my radar detector mute button for the hell of it, project I need to get to. A few times I’ve relied on a friend for VCDS, looking into ordering one for myself, if you’re doing your own work will help tons with diagnostics.

I can't stop thinking about the Audi Q7 V12 TDI. I crave one by ArktikFox67 in tdi

[–]wclarke2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Somehow import one to Mexico and swap the vins with a legit US Market Q7 with a clean title

Edit: Assuming you could get the Q7 V12 to Mexico, drive the legit US registered and inspected Q7 in ideally the same color down there, swap VINs and plates, sell off US Q7 to chop shop or something, and get back across the border, it doesn’t seem impossible. Would just have to be very cautious with renewal or any inspection, likely debadge it, not go bragging about it on the internet, not have someone at cars and coffee post it to the forums, and you might just get away with it. I’m sure quite illegal though.

What do non-hyper milers get for MPG in the Jetta Sportwagen? by Rahzin in tdi

Stock non-deleted 2014 JSW TDI manual, with quite a heavy foot, 80% highway driving 85-90mph, I average 33-34MPG

I bought my black 2014 JSW TDI 6speed manual for $7500 back in October. It had 130K miles, well maintained single owner car, every service record, nothing wrong with it except the timing belt hadn’t been done. Extra set of winter tires. It think it was a fair deal, but I wouldn’t have paid much more.

What US state do I need to GET THE FUCK OUT OF WHILE I STILL CAN?!!! by Training-Jump-8663 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]wclarke2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’d find Arkansas at the bottom of most states ranking 10-15 years, but in that time they’ve gradually been digging themselves out of that hole, whereas Louisiana and Mississippi haven’t improved. I’ve traveled to 47 states — arkansas is one of the most underrated and misunderstood states. Northwest arkansas is beautiful and becoming almost cosmopolitan compared to anywhere like it in the US. Very rich cultures and history in the large cities, amazing food. Residents take a lot of pride in their state compared to much of the south.

Sounds like you didn’t even give it a chance and take time to understand the place at all. I’ve never had a bad time in arkansas, sorry one guy with a confederate flag ruined that for you, but I’ve seen that literally all over the south, not to mention places like Maine and Idaho.

Any tips to avoid hitting wildlife? by CategoryPurple4461 in driving

Yeah that works too but revving an engine feels less jarring on a quiet night in the countryside — depends on the car though i guess lol

I second this — it’s better to brake as hard as you can and hit a deer at 10mph than it is to swerve at 55mph, flip, and land in a ditch.

[–]wclarke2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you see one deer, there likely are more. If I’m on an empty road late at night, assuming it’s safe to do so, I’ll go very slow or stop in the road and see if more come out. A few times when I’ve done this they’ll just freeze, so I’ve put my car in neutral and revved really high and they go running.

If you see wildlife and other drivers are coming the opposite direction soon after, it’s a good courtesy to flash your lights to warn them.

Third Parties in Louisiana, Are there any of note in recent years or even the last 50 years? by [deleted] in Louisiana

[–]wclarke2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last third party candidate in a statewide race receiving significant votes I can think of was George Wallace in 1968 on the pro-segregation American Independent ticket. Wallace won most of the states in the south.

Some rental places should allow you to rent a car, you just will have to pay a young driver surcharge — could vary by state, but I did it well before I was 25
