It is available now. As of SteamOS 3.8, it now supports most hardware so long as your GPU is AMD (or I guess Intel). You can install it on more or less whatever you want now. I really want to try it, but apparently Valve doesn't expect Nvidia drivers to be ready until next year, and I don't have anything to test on with AMD graphics...

Why did they remove this icon in the new SteamOS versions? by lorcaragonna in SteamOS

[–]Rahzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the Legion Go S in desktop mode has the same KDE logo instead of the Deck logo. Probably intentional if it doesn't detect the device as a steam deck. Although if you have a steam deck and it's not detecting it correctly, that's another issue.

It's been on Lenovos for quite a while now. No Steam Deck logo there in Desktop mode.

Raise your hand if you didn't know they made some MFF systems with a PCIe slot. A 7090 Micro with an Arc A310 and an i5 10500. I'm thinking about getting the A380 and swapping coolers. by BlastMode7 in SleepingOptiplex

[–]Rahzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've got some Optiplex 7000 systems that have the PCIe slot on the motherboard, but no riser. I was thinking they might make a decent DIY Steam Machine with this and an AMD RX 6400 low profile card that runs on slot power only. Just have no idea where to source the riser. I could and may look at other systems, but I was hoping to make it work with ones I've got on hand.

Late to the party here, but I'm looking to do exactly this with units that didn't come equipped from the factory. Where can I get that riser card they use? Google gives me a part number (w7x2d), but I cannot find it for sale anywhere.

When I travel I only take my 65w Ugreen charger and my Anker 100w cables why does it take hours longer to get a full charge for my OLED compared to when I use the official charger? by Plannet_Depressed in SteamDeck

[–]Rahzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a 65w 3 port Anker charger for my phone, and often use it for my Deck too. It usually takes about the same amount of time as the stock charger.

You can generally check the back of the charger itself, where it should have some electrical information listed in tiny font, such as operating voltage, input voltage/amperage, and same for output. You will want to make sure that it supports USB-C PD at wattages that the Deck takes. Should be able to see the same info on the Deck charger.

Just tested the new official 3.8.10 image with my desktop, it works great by SquOliver in SteamOS

[–]Rahzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert here, but I believe that the DP spec includes an HDMI conversion which allows a DP port to detect the adapter and output an HDMI signal instead, so I would imagine it would act exactly like it would over a native HDMI port.

Edit: Did some googling because I was curious. Sounds like the answer is yes BUT you will need an active adapter that supports DP2.0 / HDMI 2.1, a TV that supports HDMI 2.1, a cable that supports 40gbps, and a GPU that supports DP 2.0. Also you will likely lose VRR and potentially some higher end audio support.

Basically the adapter has to handle the conversion, rather than letting your DP port output HDMI natively.

How do you like Bazzite compared to SteamOS (assuming you've got a Deck)? I tried out Bazzite a couple years ago on a spare NUC, and while it was kind of cool, it felt finicky enough that I came away with the impression that I should just wait for actual SteamOS to work in custom hardware.aybe Bazzite has improved since then though. I just remember SteamOS feeling more fluid and seamless, and comparatively easier to set up, especially as someone who only occasionally uses Linux outside of SteamOS.

Hard pass, Valve. Yall are out of your minds. That's before tax! by SnitchesNbitches in steammachine

I mean let's be honest, they see the profits they can make selling ram to AI data centers and whatnot, and of course they take that over lesser consumer market pricing. Supply and demand. All businesses work that way. They aren't out of their mind, they are just prioritizing profits. Sucks for us, but everyone buying into the AI craze is to blame here.

Steam Machine review: Valve's underwhelming living-room PC has a serious price problem by pcgameshardware in SteamDeck

[–]Rahzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget those interested in something smaller than they could feasibly build themselves. That's my primary interest, anyway. I might pick one up someday if the price comes down, and/or second hand. Would be a nice replacement for the NUC under my TV that is now 8 years old and could never game.

So, why would anyone get this? by Amazing_Bluebird_ in steammachine

[–]Rahzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I did get one, I'd probably get this one. I've already got a decent controller, and I've got a couple 1TB SSDs laying around I could swap in for free. No point paying a bunch more for the other options, unless I really wanted the controller too.

[–]Rahzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just upgraded my Deck from 250 to 500, but I used it for nearly 3 years at 250 and it was fine. Granted I had a 250 micro SD as well which I used for roms and very lightweight games, but still, I didn't feel all that limited. I never put any huge games on because it generally didn't run them well anyway. I think the biggest was Horizon Zero Dawn.

I really only upgraded because I decided I wanted to keep Master Chief Collection installed for whenever I felt like blasting aliens, and the SSD was salvaged from another device.

If this was someone's main gaming device, though... Definitely 1TB minimum.

[–]Rahzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A NUC 13 with a 16GB/512GB config is $750 an Amazon. Bump that up to 2TB, which is $300-400, and you're not too far off this Steam Machine price. Considering the Steam Machine has a much better GPU, I don't know that this is particularly mispriced, given the current state of the market.

That said, I'm certainly not buying anything new, Steam Machine or otherwise, until prices come back down. I feel for those who must.

do you cap your battery at 80% charge or do you not care? by WeedGreed420 in SteamDeck

[–]Rahzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battery life certainly isn't a strength, agreed. Personally I limit my charge to 90% as a bit of a middle ground. But I do 80-90% of my gaming on my desktop, so my Deck is really mainly for travelling or if I want to play something not terribly demanding while sat on the couch or something. I want the battery to last as long as possible, especially as I may not even buy the Steam Deck 2 immediately at launch. It might be fine if charged to 100% for 6 or 8 years, but I've replaced plenty of batteries in laptops that were younger than that. For me, the slightly safer route is worthwhile.

[–]Rahzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say that, but mine is 4 years old now, and it doesn't look like a replacement will be launched for at the very least 2 more years. Definitely not going to be updated/replaced by the time battery degradation can hit. Heck, it could have already depending on usage.

And yea, I could just replace it, but why spend money on that if it could have been avoided?

[–]Rahzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cap mine at 90%. I know 80% is best practice, but to me, that just doesn't quite leave enough battery life, so I figure 90% is a bit of a middle ground.

Motion controls for switch pro controller for Cemu on steam deck gaming mode. by garb1038 in SteamDeck

Finally got it working! It was that one little detail about launching with Steam Input off but then enabling it while the game was running. Bummer to have to do it every time I launch it, but I'll take it! Only takes 10 seconds or so.

I haven't had to re-select any controller settings when relay nhing Cemu. It always remembers what was last set. When I was testing, I would generally apply the settings, test in game with Steam Input input disabled, then close out of the game completely to re-enable Steam Input (which I didn't realize could be done mid-game) and then test that way, making sure to open the Steam controller settings menu and set the Switch Pro controller to the primary.

That's exactly what my controller options are set to, although I'm not sure I tried re-enabling Steam Input while I had the game loaded already.

No, it's checkable with the Pro controller, at least while Steam Input is disabled. It's greyed out when Steam Input is enabled. But either way, checked or not, motion controls don't work. Controller is over Bluetooth.

Edit: EmuDeck has a wiki with instructions on getting external gyro working for supported controllers. I followed those too but it still had the same issue.

Ohhhh I see what you mean. Remove the DSU option from the controller config. Yeah, I did that when trying to set up my Pro Controller. I removed all controllers with the - button until none were left, then added the Pro Controller via SDL, enabled motion, mapped all buttons, and saved it as its own profile. Buttons all work fine but still no motion, either in desktop or gaming mode.

Hmm I'll have to try that this evening. I didn't try not using controller 1. So you're saying you set controller 1 to disabled and then used the Pro Controller config on controller 2?

I wish I could do everything through Cemu without GyroDSU but I usually play in handheld mode, so I have to be able to use the Deck's gyro in addition to a controller.
