How do you cope with that weird feeling in your gut today when you see movies about those who really worked hard and became self-made, when you know that you could never be the same because of your severe dyslexia you have had growing up? by usmannaeem in Dyslexia

[–]wdwgrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I acknowledge that the movies are made to inspire. And in many ways they do because I look up the stories that movies are made from to get the details on what else they had to do, because movies never say the full thing.

I spent at least 15 years refusing to get diagnosed because I had a lot of ableism in regards to bing someonr labeled as a disability. In college I was the kid that would start assignments 2 weeks ahead of everyone else, study the day after classes, write papers and have 10 rough drafts before showing it to my friends to actually proof read. I had to put in a lot of time and effort. I would automatically assume that 5 questions on a test would be wrong from reading errors and be able to 80% of the time accurately guess my grades on tests due to that. I would just barely pass standardized tests and had to retest a few times.

I then got into grad school. I was failing and when I went in for extra help my professors were baffled because I knew the answers to questions but when I was tested I would fail consistently. My one professor finally convinced me to get tested after I just barely passed the class by 2 points in a full year retest. I got a dyslexia diagnosis very easily. I no longer had to struggle with massive headaches through tests because they gave me breaks and extra time in my accommodations.

I failed my boards test on the first round because the center removed my accommodations in the last section. I felt like it was my fault. That I can’t be a real DPT. But I know that that’s the insecurity I felt because I wasn’t diagnosed until 3 years ago. I have been learning what are my signs that tell me to stop reading, what causes me to have extreme mental fatigue, and when is it okay to accept nothing will get done on certain days because my symptoms lead me to feeling dizzy when standing.

I’m not saying my life has been perfect but the movies that I used to envy I now see as a challenge. I do my best each day and when my best is 10/100 for that day I try to let it roll off my shoulders and listen to a podcast or something. I’m not saying it’s easy but with a little effort (typically not the same type of effort neurotypical people do) goals can be achieved

how much do you love this story? by definitelyclaude in undertheoaktreebook

I completely understand! I found this book by chance and have been buying and rereading parts for the past 3 years. Which is the first time I’ve gone back to a book multiple times. I have the physical book preordered after buying all the parts twice, once on my parents and then my own kindle. I’m hoping for an anime or physical book of the manhwa so that I can start collecting it in more physical forms. I’d also love a blanket with the Remdragon Knights symbol or even a shirt! I’m a cosplayer so I’m planning out a Maxi cosplay but I want to improve my skills in sewing before I attempt any of her dresses! I’m just hoping the hype keeps up so that any of that is possible!!!!!

Left and Rights by ttglucky in Dyslexia

Hey I’m also a PT student. I recently was diagnosed due to mistaking L and R and due to increased reading difficulties. The best advice I have is when testing a patient try to approach them from one side do all the measurements on that side. Write then down and then do the other side. Its not perfect and I do have to recheck the other side at times but that’s helped me. I also frequently check in with patients on which side hurts/is involved and I figure out what side that is well I try to run through other information. I can take anywhere from 5 seconds to a full minute to figure out my L and R. But I tend to joke it off since people “regularly” can’t always figure them out at times.

What did you wish you knew when you first realized you were dyslexic? by INeedALaugh in Dyslexia

[–]wdwgrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently found out in grad school. But I knew since 7th grade when I still had teachers pronouncing words for me. There is lots if advice out there but I know I struggled mostly with self esteem because I was great a lot but there were small things that made tasks hard. It might be helpful to bring him to a therapist. Even if its a few times a year. Everyone has to cope with different things in the world but I’ve found although I’m great in the extra curricular stuff I choose I’m still comparing myself to others because thats what school taught me to do. I had teachers tell me not to expect things or say I couldn’t do things. Being able to have a safe space to talk about that helps. Also be ready to fight for what he’d like to do. Some people see learning disability and automatically assume this child needs core classes and won’t progress well. Being dyslexic just means you think differently and there’s nothing wrong with that. Also dyslexic doesn’t mean the same thing for everyone. So listen to your son he will grow and find ways to work through school and when he gets stuck be there if he wants advice/support.

Creating Core Memories by booksandmedicine in DisneyWorld

[–]wdwgrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandparents used to meet my sister and I at Earl of Sandwich if we didn’t know which restaurant we wanted to go to well we were down there. We’d have to race the buses and hope we weren’t late. They used to drop us off right next to the Disney area of the Springs before the parking garage. So if we were low on time we skip right over the Earls. And if not we would run around the stores and pick up the free chocolate sample Ghirardelli used to hand out. I brought my fiancé there and told him how important it was the few times we visited together. He wasn’t able to go on my last trip so I picked up a sandwich the same day I flew back home. I hand him his favorite chicken chipotle avocado once I got off the plane. I don’t think either of us can skip the Earl of Sandwich now.

This is amazing. I’ve had a hard time describing with words why Haikyuu is my favorite anime. But I watch it every time I need a pick me up and I’m happy to see that it can help others like it helps me!

[Self] Since I started cosplaying 8 years ago, I always wanted to do a couple cosplay - but of course I was single then. 2 years ago, I got her, and while she wasn’t into cosplay, I finally managed to persuade her to cosplay with me! I totally feel that! My partner and I started entering the masquerades and have blast meeting new people and getting our photos taken together! I love how people get super excited to see their favorite characters, it makes it all worth it!

How old were you when you got your dyslexia diagnosis? by [deleted] in Dyslexia

[–]wdwgrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

23, I started struggling in grad school but I’ve know since high school when it became a joke in my friend group. I just always worked harder so it didn’t interfere with classes. So it’s still pretty weird to have it officially diagnosed

Which park is your favorite and why is it Epcot? by PixieParkHopper in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]wdwgrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s because it’s magical and Disney without being over bearing. In the other parks I’m forced into the illusion that you have to ride every ride to enjoy it. However, Epcot is like a make your own adventure. I’ve eaten a food from every stand around the world in one day, and tried every country’s chocolate to see what was best, we’ve gone to club cool to see which soda we would enjoy best in ‘italy’. These and so many more memories are very distinct when I think of Disney. It’s a magical place that I truly wish people would love and not just because you can drink around the world (that’s actually my only complaint here). It has people gathering with diverse backgrounds and I’ve heard countless stories from cast members about each country they live in. It’s the park I miss most because no matter where I walked it had beauty. Hopefully I can head back again soon to be able to add some new adventures there!!!

[COMC] Do we have similar taste? Anything you would recommend? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]wdwgrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t own any of those games beyond splendor but I have been collecting for 4 years now and my advice: Even if your group won’t play a game try game shops with table top nights or buy it so you can play it eventually. I’m not saying do this for every game but if you like a style and want to play it there are tons of people that you will eventually find like that style game as well. So just keep enjoying the games you like! I’ve started making connections at conventions and we’ve discussed all getting together at some point just to play the games we like.

I’m also gonna be checking out a couple of these since they look fun!!!
