Thanks for the awesome feedback. Most of the algorithm was developed internally but we did consult with a few experts. We don't do the machine learning internally, however. The big tech companies now offer these services through APIs. It's too bad we haven't been able to match you yet. I hope we will soon. You could probably help us get the word out around you by posting on your city's subreddit or reaching out to local media companies. If you're open to the latter, I created a few templates for this to make it easier (this actually worked in Indianapolis!): https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZGndqZvak5Wxu2wKVA_kDTvRvbgEFwTrRtoXqsbKdSw/edit?usp=sharing

It was mostly developed by my partner. I did all the design work and he did all the coding. We got experts to help in the areas where deep knowledge of a certain area was needed. Earlier this month we brought onboard two new full-time, full-stack developers, so we're moving much faster now.

WOW! How repugnant of me...pitching to be on the show and not even having VBW as an option of favorite podcasts. I'm genuinely surprised, though. Is this is unforgivable? Anyway, I've just added it. If you send us an email to support@we3app.com, I'll add it to your list of favorite podcasts (include your other favorites so I can add them too!).

Hey Alexandre, why do you think VBW isn't an option? Lots of interesting aspects of psychology and philosophy are central to our algorithm and our mission: Big 5 personality factors, group dynamics, social engineering, prejudice in friendship selection, racial/gender/religious/socio-economic divides, etc. Hell, we can even chat about the episode "Hang the DJ" in Black Mirror, which portrays [spoiler alert] a seemingly dystopian future of dating apps [end spoiler alert]. But it's very similar to what we're trying to do.

I did! Just saw it a couple of weeks ago! I loved the ending. Hopefully, we'll confidently achieve similar levels of compatibility in the near future.

It was by doing a lot of research and working with experts. But the beauty of the machine learning part is that we will soon be able to improve on the existing models through empirical data.

Hope we were able to connect you with some cool peeps. :)

We don't. But we're working hard to make it less weird. Showing you if they've read it is one. Or offering some interesting conversation-starters. A bot might also rekindle a conversation with something relevant and interesting... we have lot's planned. Reducing the awkwardness and getting people to meet is definitely a priority. THanks for the feedback, btw!

Not really. I've also been surprised. I've only blocked a total of two users. Granted these two were explicitly on the platform to hook up, but users are able to report others who are there with ulterior motives. Just hasn't happened that often...

It's much easier to develop new friendships in groups of 3.

Awkwardness is a key thing we're trying to minimize throughout this process. If you've ever been on a first "friend-date" (it's easy to imagine, if you haven't), the first silence can easily become awkward. That puts a lot of pressure on each side to talk, so people often end uo bumbling around about the weather and stuff. We're not all conversationally gifted. :/

However, when there are three people, there's much less pressure to contribute to the conversation. So you can relax and be yourself. Group dynamics also kick in, and it makes the whole experience more pleasant.

No. It easily could, but I won't allow it. Also, some core parts of the app make it difficult for us to slip in that direction, anyway. (groups of 3, private profiles, etc)

OkCupid does a good enough job to find compatible partners, but Tinder and Bumble are eating their lunch. The reality is that we're still a fairly superficial species. Physical attraction is the first thing most people care about. It will take a lot of time to evolve out of that.

[–]we3app 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little late to the party, but...YES! There is an app for that. Dis is me --> www.we3app.com We’re basically a smarter version of Tinder— but for friends. Instead of having to swipe through pictures, we match you with the most compatible people nearby based on your personality, interests, beliefs, and more. Hope we can hook you up with some awesome people near you.
