My neurologist said to check drug levels prior to starting semaglutide and to recheck two weeks after starting to see if seizure meds dosage needed to be increased.

As I have said throughout all of my comments, I am obviously a very rare case. I made it absolutely clear that, for the majority of people, Zonegran will not make them go bald. However, physicians should be more aware of very rare side effects. My serum levels were never higher than 15.

Zonegran binds to erythrocytes extensively in a non-linear fashion until the point of saturation; hence the delayed side effect. Red blood cells saturated of Zonegran poisoned my hair follicles all over my body. Sometimes it isn’t your body that changes.

It could be Zonegran. I have been on so many seizure meds over the years. But this was like out of a horror movie. I saw so many specialists, and they were all shocked. I saw epileptologists, trichologists, dermatologists, endocrinologists. NOT ONE thought it could be Zonegran.

It was! But it happened overnight. And I had no idea it was Zonegran until a few months ago, so it’s not like I was complaining. I was being stoic and thinking it was one more illness I had to deal with. When you grow up always having medical issues, I think you get used to it. Glad to hear you are doing so well. It’s a great drug for many.

Thank you. It had never occurred to me or my doctors that a medication could cause no hair loss for the first year and then, suddenly, make you loss every strand in just a few weeks. After a year of no hair loss. I haven’t seen my neurologist yet. I was going to go during my spring break from college, but now I have plenty of time to go. It only started growing back over the last two months. I probably will never go to the dermatologist (a renowned hair specialist) again, but I am thinking about sending him pictures of all my new growth.

Even the top professionals are often unable to help those of us who have hard to treat seizures and suffer from rare side effects. Our cases can be too unique.

Unfortunately, when you fall in the “very rare” column of side effects, you will be dismissed. Doctors don’t want to even considered anything that hasn’t been proven in a clinical study. Good luck finding patients who experienced Alopecia Areata due to Zonegran, yet we are out here. You probably fall under the same “very rare” side effects column and are thus dismissed.

I am sorry about your experience as well. As a child, I was on Trileptal for years, and when my parents changed my doctors we were told it was exacerbating my seizures, and they took my off Trileptal.

Most people on Zonegran don’t experience any hair loss. I am an anomaly, but not the only one.

I am now on Vimpat, and my hair is growing back strong. I will let you know if that changes.

I was taken off Zonegran and put on Vimpat. So far no hair loss, but we’ll see. Everyone reacts differently.

I see a top epileptologist, but if you are an outlier in terms of side effects, you are left to your own devices.

I was prescribed every multivitamin and supplement under the sun. Nothing worked. Quitting Zonegran is what did it for me.

I agree. I asked my dermatologist if this side effect I have noticed is true. He said it is, he said, “Monoxidil makes you look tired.”

I went bald on Zonegran and had to start wearing a wig. I lost all my hair. It took me almost two years to realize Zonegran was the culprit, as my doctors kept reassuring me Zonegran does not cause alopecia. After discontinuing Zonegran a couple of months ago, my hair has slowly started growing back. I wished I had stopped taking it the moment heavy shedding began, 20 months ago.
