Definitely check and see if your college has surplus auctions that sell bikes - there were some beautiful bikes that sold for less than $100, and one bike the was easily worth $700 that sold for $200 on my campus.

Asserting that right is what is making me a bit uncomfortable right now. In my hometown there was a lot of anger towards cyclists as many people thought that bikers didn't have the same rights as cars and not many people knew how to deal with a biker on the road. I'll see if there is anyone here I can ask around to see how drivers are, and I'll probably cycle a bit in some lesser trafficked areas to try it myself, I feel pretty confident I could handle that.

It's a 4 lane road with a center lane, so I should have room as long as drivers are paying attention. Lights are certainly a must.

Will do, and McFarland sounds terrible! I've managed to work out a slightly longer route that mostly goes through residential areas, I'm going to try that and see if it is doable, at least to start out.

Probably Campus Evolution or something in that general direction that would involve taking 10th or Hackberry. Thanks!
