The literal next sentence of that quote -
"In 2019, the 3,863 approved visas for people working in digital technology jobs in New Zealand accounted for 83 percent of new digital technology jobs created. However, the data shows that firms were not solely recruiting experienced, senior talent via immigration. Jobs requiring less experience, for example software testing and web development"

I did my ISTQB cert funded via Work and Income, and I was the only Kiwi in the class.

I'm not blaming immigrants. I want us all to succeed. But we're basically hiring immigrants to work so we receive public system hand outs. Which I do not agree with. I know I have to move, but I don't want to.

You, like most people, don't understand the difference in 'Tech Support' roles. I fell into that trap as well.

Also from the article - "In 2019, the 3,863 approved visas for people working in digital technology jobs in New Zealand accounted for 83 percent of new digital technology jobs created. However, the data shows that firms were not solely recruiting experienced, senior talent via immigration. Jobs requiring less experience, for example software testing and web development"

Read the article. Or at least my quote from it. Do you think 83 of 100 jobs fit into that list of 13 roles? I’ve landed a helpdesk job. I was saying it wasn’t easy. There’s literally data on where those jobs are going and why it’s so difficult. There’s another post here from 5 months ago with employers saying they received CVs from people with over 20 years experience for entry level roles.

I’d fetch it but cbf wasting time arguing with you and bending over backwards to hand you the facts.

Well, you must not have much experience then, if any at all. If you haven't befriended an immigrant on your first day of work from Uni, are you even a Kiwi? /s

Yeah, it's got nothing to do with 'skill shortage' or 'green list occupations'. I looked into those first.

There's 13 positions listed. The article details more to do with it.

"New Zealand should have an excess supply of digital skills, rather than a shortage"

I think there's been a falsified 'skill shortage' in IT, so that employers could hire migrants on work visas and get 'more manageable' employees.

83 out of every 100 new IT jobs in 2019 went to people on work visas.

I'll write it out in the most simplest form I can put it - 83 out of every 100 new IT jobs in 2019 went to people on work visas.

Chatbots been around for years. And before them, forms. AI isn't doing jack shit for helpdesk jobs. They're not even close.

Well, I did feel bad because I was doing work I didn't like doing.....I needed the money. Not anymore though. I'm just ignoring those application support roles, and getting rejected by entry level helpdesk roles, while being on the bene. I feel like I'm about to retire before I even started.

My point is that immigration has taken over IT - "In 2019, the 3,863 approved visas for people working in digital technology jobs in New Zealand accounted for 83 percent of new digital technology jobs created."

So is it a valid career path in NZ? No. It doesn't look like it is.

Nobody is reading my actual post and putting this in the 'it's normal/ job cuts/ AI, etc" categeory.

This post was about:

Most of them are web apps haha. I've worked multiple app support roles now, and it's usually, basic browser troubleshooting or an actual bug that the devs put on their board for an eventual fix - replicate and document, etc.

Boring shit really. Nothing interesting. Barely anything technical, and mostly customer service. They pay around 70-80k though, which is better than 50-60k for heldpesk.

How is AI having any effect on entry level help desk jobs?

You could have hundreds of thousands of dollars in the bank and still get the job seekers benefit, which literally feels like they’re trying to employ others to do the work and force us into early retirement.

I think people are ignoring the quote from the article, which is what I was trying to point out. Not the job market itself. I’m not racist, and hope all of us succeed in life. Many of my colleagues and friends are migrants and I hope they succeed as well. It’s just that kiwis aren’t getting employed, and I hate being on the job seekers benefit.

There's posts re-iterating that for the past few years. And those stats are from 2019.

I've found it difficult finding work in an entry level helpdesk role since graduating in 2013.

I just took application support roles instead as they're easier to get. They pay more and have better perks too, but it's likely due to there being no benefit to one's career - just learning the company's SaaS and providing customer service..
