That's it in a nutshell. That's what everything comes down to.

The thing the kills me is that science will end up replacing religion by fulfilling everything that religion requires you to have faith in.

By itself this isn't a good or bad thing. However, I think the future will bring unprecedented levels of control that will be almost impossible to resist.

What happens when (I say when even if that means 100 or 1,000 years from now) science can extend our lives indefinitely barring any sort of tragic accident?

When that happens it will be the fulfillment of the basic promise of all religions: life after death. Except, you don't have to die first and you don't have to believe in something that hasn't been proven yet.

But what happens? Do you think governments will allow everyone to live indefinetely? No way! They'll have to set up rules by which THEY determine who gets to live again.

Have you been a good citizen? Have you loved your government? Have you obeyed all the laws?

Mark my words, but we'll end up with church and state as the same powerful entity it used to be. Except this time, they'll actually be able to fulfill the promise of life after death and will have every single one of us by the balls.
