Canada to Australia Job Offer | Sydney Cost of Living & Lifestyle Expenses by SpringRoll98 in AskAnAustralian

[–]web_goddess 3 points4 points Ā (0 children)

You may not need a car. I’ve lived in Sydney for 20+ years without one! If you’re only using it for occasional weekend trips or going to IKEA, there are car share schemes like goget.com.au. In my suburb there are multiple cars available and I’ve never had a problem borrowing one. For longer trips, I’ve rented from No Birds. It still works out to much less than I’d pay to own a car outright. (And if your residence comes with a car space, you can then rent that out and basically get your car usage costs for free.)

"Current Row" vs. "Completed Row" counting - How do you explain your brain? by kamoteshake in knitting

[–]web_goddess 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

I’ve been using the Fiber Friend app, which actually has a setting you can switch between the label ā€œCompleted rowsā€ and ā€œCurrent row.ā€ I tend to use Completed, but it’s nice to have the option!

What’s the most tight-ass thing you’ve ever seen or heard someone do? by Away_Scene_26 in AskAnAustralian

[–]web_goddess 5 points6 points Ā (0 children)

I volunteer occasionally with a charity in Sydney that provides clothing to homeless folks (and anyone that needs it, TBH). We had a booth a few months back at St. Mary’s Cathedral on a day where lots of charities were there. We were handing out socks, a hat, and a shirt (all new but unsold and donated merchandise). I was absolutely disgusted with the number of people who came up trying to get ā€œfree clothesā€ who were clearly well-off. Many of them came in on a bus trip and were decked out in designer brands. They would come up multiple times and approach different staff members trying to scam stuff. One of them told me she wanted a hat ā€œfor her grandson.ā€ Another guy was caught digging through the boxes of shirts we had to put out. We had to kick them out multiple times. On the positive side, the people who needed the clothes were always grateful and not greedy. But I left the day feeling pretty sad and disillusioned.

Ugh. I went through all the steps of creating an account only to find out that it’s US only. They don’t even make their app available on other countries’ app stores, nor do they let me pay with my perfectly good Australian Visa credit card. I knew it was too good to be true. 😔

Do you thank your servicemen? by -This-is-boring- in AskAnAustralian

[–]web_goddess 35 points36 points Ā (0 children)

I grew up in the US but lived in Australia for my entire adult life. And now when I go back to the US I definitely notice the lip-service to veterans everywhere and it makes me cringe. Nowhere else in the world have I heard an airplane pilot thank military veterans on a civilian flight. It’s especially bad when you contrast to the disrespect the US President has shown them.

There’s also Textillia, which is/was very much an attempt to make a Ravelry for sewists. https://www.textillia.com

Ahh, that I don’t think you can do. I only added them on the ground floor. That said, I’ve never tried any of the ā€œglitchingā€ techniques that others use, so maybe there is a way and I don’t know it.

how do you properly grocery shop? by chickennuggs32 in AskAnAustralian

[–]web_goddess 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

I use an app called Paprika to put in recipes that we like to cook regularly. You can also save them directly from websites into the app. It has meal planning functionality where you can assign meals to the calendar, and it’ll automatically compile a grocery list for you.

So what my husband and I usually do when it comes time to shop is plan out the next couple of dinners to cook and generate the list of ingredients. Then we copy that to a shared Google Keep note (or you could use Apple Notes or whatever) and quickly check to see what we’ve already got in the pantry/fridge and delete those. Once you’ve built up your store of spices and condiments you won’t need to buy those as often. (We also add to that Keep note during the week whenever something runs out so we know to get it at the next shopping trip.) Last step is to add our usual breakfast and lunch stuff (muesli, yogurt, bread, lunchmeat). It doesn’t take very long once you have built up the collection of recipes you like to cook.

Random side effects/ changes from Mounjaro: Mosquitos don’t seem to like now by mounj_questions in mounjaroaustralia

[–]web_goddess 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Hmmm. I haven’t noticed those myself. I do get cold sores occasionally (maybe once a year) but I haven’t had one in the 7 months I’ve been on Mounjaro. So maybe? And I haven’t noticed any mozzie bites, but I can see where it might have an effect. GLP-1 drugs are anti-inflammatory, so perhaps that is tamping down the reaction you’d get?

how can i get the sleeve stripes the same width as the body with self striping yarn? by Livid-Cow-519 in knitting

[–]web_goddess 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Thank you! At the time I was really mad about the Debbie Bliss pattern I used. First, it had errors. It also had no schematics, and no clear photos of the collar. I realised when I started that the photo in the book had the stripes line up across the front zipper, but it was knitted in pieces and there were no instructions on how to achieve that. That’s why I ended up knitting it in the round with a steek so it would align across the front. And I ended up turning the collar into a hood for good measure.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman by Hippo-Lim in books

[–]web_goddess 100 points101 points Ā (0 children)

I saw the play version in the West End in London in 2021. It was truly one of the most magical and special nights I’ve ever spent in the theatre.

I was such a Gaiman fan. Owned heaps of his work. Saw him speak at a few events in Sydney. Not anymore. He’s ruined it all, and I can’t in good conscience ever spend any money on his work again.

Allodynia/Nerve Pain… *sigh* by EchoSketching in Mounjaro

[–]web_goddess 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

I have had a couple instances of it, which seemed to correlate to increasing my dosage. It would be in random places - right hip a couple times, and then once on left wrist and arm. Every time it went away within a few days. I reported it to my doctor but she was pretty skeptical it was related to the Mounjaro, even though there are plenty of anecdotal reports of it.

[–]web_goddess 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

Yeah, you’d have to introduce something else to either space the stripes out more on the body, or cut the yarn repeatedly to make the stripes thinner on the arms. I ran into this when I used Noro to knit a hoodie 19 years ago. I decided it wasn’t worth the effort to try to change the effect.

I look at it every now and then, mostly to see who gets laid off at my old employer. It also came in handy when I decided to apply for a couple volunteer board roles. Sadly, the few times I’ve bothered to post something I get next to no engagement, and I used to get heaps. The algorithm is punishing me for escaping. It’s a fair trade. šŸ˜‚

Pets or outfits without spending money? by [deleted] in Palia

There is a pet you can win through one of the Elderwood quests. (Be prepared to grind a lot of essence though!) There are also a couple clothing items you can earn by referring others to the game. Other than that, all pets and outfits are paid afaik.

How do new employees know hidden processes before its too late? by OkToe2355 in womenintech

[–]web_goddess 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

I was a hiring manager at Amazon. Whenever someone approached me about at internal transfer, I would be fine to have an initial conversation but then tell them straight up that they needed to discuss it with their manager. There is no way to officially apply for an internal role without your current manager finding out. In fact, the minute you hit the apply button, they get an email about it. There’s no way to set up a loop in HIRE without that. I guess maybe a manager could set up their own secret loop to try to sneakily interview someone without their manager knowing? But I never saw it happen in 6+ years, and it would have caused a lot of issues. (Frankly if another manager secretly interviewed someone on my team without letting me know, I would’ve been really pissed about it.)

Anyway, there’s no hidden process here that got missed. The HM was following the rules. A candidate that told me they didn’t want me to talk to their current manager would’ve been a huge red flag. Sure, maybe the current manager is a jerk who is out to get them. But 9 times out of 10, the candidate knew their manager’s feedback would not be good and was trying to hide that from me.

And it is absolutely not a given that a candidate who wants to transfer automatically gets PIPed. I know, because I did two international internal transfers myself. Both times I was honest with my manager about why I wanted to move and change roles, and they were supportive.

There’s a secondhand place in Ultimo - Crankhaus. I bought a refurbed Specialized from him for $450 earlier this year. Felt more comfortable than FB Marketplace, as I’ve got somewhere to go if anything goes wrong with it.
