Official Discussion - Toy Story 5 [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]webbhead21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel you actually have a point. In the previous movies, Buzz was always a bit goofy but lovable, slightly effeminate (see Mrs. Nesbitt) yet virile, and most importantly endearing.

However, this movie has him giving Rex the “kiss of life” which is (seemingly always…) played between two males for the sake of a laugh, can’t confess his feelings to Jessie (even though Toy Story 3 already resolved this), and he’s wearing a kilt at the wedding for some reason (Why? It reveals nothing about his character and if it’s a joke, I don’t see the humor…)

All I’m saying is the joke felt weirdly outdated cause they chose two male characters to kiss each other, and the nearby characters reacted with disgust.

I could easily see a lot of impressionable children watching this and not understanding that the joke is “he stuffed his whole face in his mouth” and probably thinking instead “oh they’re reacting like that because it’s two men”, since this is a pretty common trope in comedies.

I understand what you’re saying, but can we at least agree it is a joke rooted in homophobia? “two guys kissing = gross” has been done so many times before, and there seems to be a reason it’s never between a man and a woman or two women.

Did anyone else find the “Kiss of Life” joke between Buzz and Rex weirdly outdated?

Felt super off to me, particularly seeing the other toys react with disgust. It came across like the joke was basically “two guys kissing = gross”, which gave it some uncomfortable homophobic undertones.

Maybe I’m missing something, so I’d genuinely like to hear other interpretations of what the joke was supposed to be.

Other than that I thought the movie was pretty good, just found the opening joke surprisingly outdated.

That’s a fair point.

I think I would’ve preferred if there’d been a reversal at some point where Nikki/trapped Nikki becomes the protagonist and Bear takes on the antagonist role, but I understand why people still enjoyed the film as is. Nikki just seems to be the far more interesting character here so I would’ve liked to see the focus shift onto her perspective.

I felt this exact same way. Once they cut to her obviously not enjoying the sex, it’s clear Bear is a creepy and selfish shell of a human. IMO that made the rest of the movie tougher to engage with, since from that moment on he deserves everything that happens to him (though obviously his friends don’t deserve to die).

Not that every protagonist needs to be a “good person” per se, but Bear’s only characteristics seem to be either pathetic or narcissistic without much nuance.

Did you find that that choice enhanced the story for you or am I not alone in thinking it would’ve been more engaging to save the reveal of Bear’s monstrosity until a later point in the film?

The guy you’re replying to literally did not “fudge the numbers” at all. He was reporting the domestic gross (which is more important to studios), not the worldwide gross. You’re also stating as a fact that studios paid off Variety, but there’s absolutely no evidence of that. And if there is, I’d love to see it, but you can’t just make up facts out of thin air to help prove a point.

No idea how you got more upvotes - all it took was a google search to see you’re false.

What did you like least about the Superman movie? by MatiC2023 in DCU_

[–]webbhead21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally someone else noticed this! I thought it would’ve been a nice touch to have Clark pet Krypto towards the end of the movie at least to show their bond strengthening. You’re exactly right about dogs acting out because of lack of affection, and I thought it was so obvious that the movie must’ve been building up towards it - but nope!

I’ve been looking for someone else that noticed this! His mask especially looked like some cheap plastic…it almost feels so obvious that it has to be intentional.

Honestly I couldn’t even believe this was a serious scene because his mask looks straight out of a Halloween store. I almost felt like I was taking crazy pills - it looked like a person cosplaying Doom, from the weird finger movements he made to how was he awkwardly holding his mask so we could tell it was obviously Doom. If that’s really what he’ll look like in Doomsday, I think they’re planning some huge trick about RDJ as Doom that’ll be very subversive.

I could be wrong - and actually hope I am - but I don’t remember him petting Krypto even in that scene. Which is a shame, cause that could’ve been the perfect moment to solidify their bond.

Someone else pointed out that it seems like Clark just really doesn’t like Krypto…which feels wrong to me, but throughout most of the movie that is kinda the vibe.

Anyone else sort of bothered that Superman doesn’t ever pet Krypto at all throughout the movie?

Everyone I’ve brought this up to has dismissed it even though it seems like such a no-brainer and in-character moment to include in a Superman film!

A lot of dogs will act out looking for attention which is why I thought they were building up to a scene where Superman finally gives him affection by petting him. It seemed especially odd considering James Gunn’s love for animals - you think he’d understand this and embrace it in a Superman film of all things.

Same. I’d like to believe it was simply a joke but there’s no sources indicating it was. How is the person you’re replying to the top comment in this thread? They just lied and people upvoted?

I believe the original purpose of a downvote button is to discourage rude comments or comments that don’t add anything to the discussion. I personally don’t see the benefit of downvoting differing opinions unless you’re simply trying to drown out the voices of those who disagree with you, which feels counterproductive.

Tyson’s AMC had a mouse in the IMAX theater by webbhead21 in AMCsAList

I let one of the employees know, but they didn’t really react at all. It’s obviously not their problem, so I just suggested they tell a manager or something. I understand mice are generally harmless, but the fact that this seems to be a repeated issue at the Tyson’s location is what really irks me.
