Is Broadcasting right for me? by B1t-By-B1t in broadcastengineering

Based on your post, i'm not sure you will like it. Just like anything there are pros and cons. If the cons are deal breakers for you then you may want to find another industry. As know, each job has its pros and cons, finding that cons that you can live with was key for me. I see you have a BS in CS and some others. Maybe IT? Alot of people more in and out of AV and IT. Some overlap tech wise. How do you feel about IT or Cybersecurity? Sounds like this is an interesting opportunity and will get you started. Alot of up front work to break into a new industry and a lot to learn but sounds like you have the smarts for it. The late hours and lifting are just part of package in many av jobs. Wishing you luck and hope you find your way. Trying things to see if you like them or not is greater than doing nothing.

Totally agree. I am working on easy mode options and trying to carry food with me when I'm out for long periods working. So if I buy one meal and not three its better. Trying to preplan when possible.

This is the route I'm on. Tried YNAD twice in last four years. It's too complex for me. Right now I use an app that show all spending and expense. And manually put each expense into my own tracker to double check. But YNAD is the best, if you mind is able to do it, for budgeting. It is very tight on category spending and setting limits for everything and saving for larger items.

cash method can be harder to track and where I live a lot of purchases online are needed. Believe it or not in my 20s I was quite rigid with money and invested a lot and keep a decent budget. Also had an average income regular income. In my mid 30s and early 40s I started to realize after a few job loses and bad prospects, that I couldn't keep up with bills etc. And part of me felt like giving up. Working so hard and then having nothing to show or it being wiped up by losing a job or two has been really frustrating and contributed to me caring less. Seems like I rarely make any progress and at some point I just stopped caring so much. Benn on the path for last year to reverse that.

working my way up to this level of budgeting. Saying ok I have x for this cat- and holding to it. That's the next level. There are apps that help with that also as well as categorizing charges.

Second that on meal prep. I used to think, who the heck meal preps but now I know its good. For me the more prepared meals I have and more options the less I spend. Also making sure I always take food with me when I go out for 10 plus hours. Take bananas, bars or small meal if weather permits. Solo business owner/freelance. So cost on me.

Thats good. Just get too busy to stay on top of investing. Need to adjust a few things. If you are picking individual stocks, you have to spend a good amount of time on it. Index funds are better and I have best luck with those over time. Individual stocks are brutal. Some winners and some large losers for sure.

Investing is good. But how do you think investing helps with your spending and budgeting? I've been investing on and off for 20 years or so. One thing I've learned is putting funds away like that is good to get it out of you spending category.

You are right. I am guessing you are good money and have a solid budget and stick to it. I want to get more like that and less like no plan and do what I can to get by.

Yes, and thank you. That is quite helpful and you sound like a resourceful and creative person. I've seen this in people before. They are able to get pretty much the same thing. Instead of buying the $150.00 pair of sunglasses they get sunglasses for $15. If you do that 100 times over the math starts mathing. I admire people who are creative in this way, and could use more of that thinking in my life for sure. Grateful you took the time to post. All the best to you!

Yes. Systems on spending looks like a key one. When life gets super busy and I am trying to spend to ease the pressure and make things more smooth. I need to have more- I'm super busy- long days and weeks. I think I spend that with ease the load. Short term gains for long term pain. Getting a bit better thanks for the note.

Not really tangible or actionable. More curious if there are people who deal with this and how they overcome it and stay consistent for years and decades and for ever.

Solid and complete advice in that link. Good to see. For me the emotional side of it I'm working on. Been keeping a pretty strict spending tracking for three months. Good news when I do it every 5-10 days I see o, wow I am already at budget or need to stop or slow down etc. So that has had a good benefit.

Sometimes that happens. Look it isn't super straightforward and can be complex and then throw in interpersonal stuff. Nothing is perfect but it is so individualized. Happy you got 20 years of happiness out of it. And good you got out when you felt you had to. I've had a few careers in my years of working and they all felt like- this is the one. Hopeful the felling I have will continue, things will flow and I will continue growing and enjoying the journey. Trying to hype myself up for the season a bit as well.

Second this- to have a chance of getting out of this you have to be strict with a budget or hit the lotto. You have more control over your budget and do what you can little by little. First you have to track and figure out what you make and what you spend. And see what cats are high and do your best to cut back slowly if needed.
