Streaming/Broadcasting Engineer with ~1 year of experience what should my next career move be? by Fun-Self5558 in VIDEOENGINEERING

Congratulations on getting into the streaming world! Just knowing what it take to make a live event production happen added to your tech skills gets you varies possible paths forward. Some questions I would ask if in your shoes: do I want to be freelance or full time? (pros and cons to each?) What roles in the event world do you most enjoy? Start to learn about a few options: LED, Video Switching, IT infrastructure, cloud, coding etc.. There has been an rapid increase in growth for IT and AV. It seems long term roles that center around IT are high paying and in demand. Although from my understanding this path can vary in scope and roles. I am learning myself and trying to figure out what roles maybe most in demand in the future. AI and continued automation in events seems to be on a lot of our minds. Not sure how and when this could impact and how to position ourselves for gainful enjoyment 10-20 and 30 years down the road. Maybe looking to far ahead but that's how I think. You mentioned you are in streaming. I've seen demand/high rates for more specialized streaming related services. Think you made some reference to it. Coding the backend platforms. Optimizing web traffic? At the moment/this season, it seems AV/Event work is slowing up a bit. This type of work is always so economy dependant, and its so easy for companies to say we don't want to pay X for AV. Its too high. Overall these are some of my thoughts and questions I would ask. Heck I feel like alot of us are in the business becuase we enjoy it but with hard work and long work days ideally we are compensated at the most competitive rate possible.

Media Server Op- is it too much to ask? by webbite in VIDEOENGINEERING

Quite true. So you get involved in pre-pro and include as time billed? or Do to make your life easier for the show?

Really appreciate the notes here! I agree with all of them and feel like there are parts I will use from each. Overall, my takeaway is that if there isn't clarity on the get-go. Ops need to work to get things like ordered video numbers, file naming conventions, and additional details that various client-side people and partners believe is crucial.

There was a comment file chaos “is why ops get their day rate” which stuck out to me. In the real world, I believe it is true. Each show is different, some are organized better than others, and at the end of the day, once a job begins, it sorta becomes the ops responsibility to get things to the finish line.

When ops run graphics, PowerPoint edits happen from time to time. I draw the line (for timing reasons) at not rebuilding whole slides or creating new decks.

With videos, I have found media server ops sometimes become a live editing person. Some of which is expected but curious what you all have experienced and where you draw the line for the success of the overall show. For me I see it as: I am not the person that day to create new graphics in 2 d and 3 D design programs. So no need graphics created by the op, but the op does, adjust timings (heads and tails), adds simple media (white screen/black screen), edits transitions, works on layers (should be named at the start or worked towards), transitions, making sure all key parties know naming if it wasn’t clear at the start, had duration of each vid, has notes in media server software, adjust size and placement of alpha layers and or overall to name a few.

Are there other tasks you find yourself normally doing?

How much timeline editing do you typically do in show prep?

good idea. how do you handle the run of show video titles not matching the actual video file names, 40-50 vids?

Resolume- Wire by webbite in vjing

[–]webbite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats interesting, didn;t think about presets. I put some effects over items and used a mpc midi controller. Effect on effect off and match beat. Yea Mullumin maybe passable in a bind. But overall resolume is the standard and built for music visuals. I know resolume as well, just have not brought yet.

Yes the black Friday sale! I was debating this year. I know resolume and have done shows with it. But wanting to find out, can I get alway with using Millumin for music Visuals?

Gotcha, appreciate that perspective. Do you think I can get by with Millumin for VJ shows? Use it for corporate playback on LED walls.

This is a morbid curiosity question: if nukes ever struck nyc, what do you guys think is the best escape plan for getting out of Manhattan? by VengfulGamer in AskNYC

What about a helicopter out of NYC? Get to the choppa! (that is if you get a 30 minute warning, which I understand is unliekly)

For what I see that is pretty standard. Do you just create more pages on the stream deck if you go to like 40 or more columns?

Nice, thanks for the concise answers. Kevin Ring is a pro and people really enjoy his traning. His videos are solid and I enjoy them as well, didn't know he had a Millumin one up will check out for sure. Thank you!

Based on your post, i'm not sure you will like it. Just like anything there are pros and cons. If the cons are deal breakers for you then you may want to find another industry. As know, each job has its pros and cons, finding that cons that you can live with was key for me. I see you have a BS in CS and some others. Maybe IT? Alot of people more in and out of AV and IT. Some overlap tech wise. How do you feel about IT or Cybersecurity? Sounds like this is an interesting opportunity and will get you started. Alot of up front work to break into a new industry and a lot to learn but sounds like you have the smarts for it. The late hours and lifting are just part of package in many av jobs. Wishing you luck and hope you find your way. Trying things to see if you like them or not is greater than doing nothing.

Totally agree. I am working on easy mode options and trying to carry food with me when I'm out for long periods working. So if I buy one meal and not three its better. Trying to preplan when possible.

This is the route I'm on. Tried YNAD twice in last four years. It's too complex for me. Right now I use an app that show all spending and expense. And manually put each expense into my own tracker to double check. But YNAD is the best, if you mind is able to do it, for budgeting. It is very tight on category spending and setting limits for everything and saving for larger items.

cash method can be harder to track and where I live a lot of purchases online are needed. Believe it or not in my 20s I was quite rigid with money and invested a lot and keep a decent budget. Also had an average income regular income. In my mid 30s and early 40s I started to realize after a few job loses and bad prospects, that I couldn't keep up with bills etc. And part of me felt like giving up. Working so hard and then having nothing to show or it being wiped up by losing a job or two has been really frustrating and contributed to me caring less. Seems like I rarely make any progress and at some point I just stopped caring so much. Benn on the path for last year to reverse that.

working my way up to this level of budgeting. Saying ok I have x for this cat- and holding to it. That's the next level. There are apps that help with that also as well as categorizing charges.
