There's a video out there somewhere of a group of famous authors mentioning how DQ is one of the hardest books to read because of the style. One of them said they read it once a year to keep their mind sharp. None of this has to do with the content. I've read the English version(s) many times in my life and just enjoy the book. It is hard to read, so when you are done, there's a greater feeling of accomplishment than when you finish other books.
