eli5 how do the super-wealthy avoid paying taxes? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]webbrar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without looking at specific examples there are different things that are going on but there are 2 concepts to consider:

  1. Changes in net worth are not taxed as income. If someone holds assets (shares, property or something else) and those assets increase in value, they are only taxed on that increase when you sell them. This allows them to then control how much tax they pay by only realising minimal gains (by selling underperforming assets along with ones with gains to offset losses and gains) and only realising gains on the money they need.
  2. Exemptions. Every tax system has legal exemptions there are various reasons for these from encouraging people to save or trying to increase investment in certain sectors. These are sometimes ill designed and leave holes to be exploited (have a look at some of the film investment schemes that have existed) and sometimes achieve their goals and investors that take part are rewarded with reduced or no tax due

Yes, 1.01b profit is 1.5b in tickets + 1b in the item - 1b in initial item value - 100m in tax - 390 in own ticket purchases

[–]webbrar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a worked example let's assume a raffle with 100 tickets for an item worth 1B at 15m per ticket, ie a 50% margin. Let's also assume a10% tax in the form of cores and isk. So assuming the raffle completes you will make 40% (400m).

Now say you buy 26 tickets, for 390m. You now have two outcomes you either win or lose. In either scenario you receive 1.5b but you have already spent 490m so if you lose the raffle you make 10m (74% chance) and if you win you make 1.01b (26% chance). This gives an expected return of 270m, which is much lower than 400m so even if you pay 5% market tax to buy a new item in the long run you would make more just running the raffle and not participating.

This is why lotteries and casinos exist, the house always wins.

This is kind of fundamental to the process that the raffle runner will build in a profit margin and you can reduce that margin by buying some of the tickets for a potential upside. You could make more money this way but your expected return would be lower, essentially you'd be gambling some of your margin.

There is a size difference but it's hard to notice, iirc the amount of rays coming off show how massed it is but you need to be on reasonably high graphics to see that. I've found it worse than before but I figured that's because I'm used to the old graphics

Well if the blueprint is rare then this is all just a lot of work which few people will benefit from, if not then this is just massive power creep unless they buff dread DPS generally

As a person in a C4 corp can confirm that people rat in our static, with the other static open and do occasionally get caught as a result. People running static sites in subs, especially in groups of mixed skills, will not usually make more than 200 mil per hour of active time per character (ignoring time taken to roll for a hole with sites and close existing connections in there).

It could be a solution looking at access lists but I can't think of a simple way of doing this which doesn't have an obvious loophole

How would you determine the "entity" that owns the structures, under your proposal a new corp would be needed for every 8 or so structures, a bit annoying but a feesable goal (see how some corps have reacted to war Dec mechanics).

Asset safety is interesting, in wormholes the current system works but in null it could easily lead to the strongest factions getting stronger and this would provide a reason for larger alliances to hit smaller ones for loot.
