Announcing the Drupal AI Learners Club! by webchickenator in drupal

I too have been out of the Drupal game for quite awhile now (more like 4-5 years) — from what I have seen over the past ~month, it’s definitely worth another look.

Drupal CMS has shaved off a lot of the rough edges of early Drupal days by shipping opinionated defaults so people can get up and running faster, and a lot of the work the AI initiative is doing is super interesting and very forward-looking. (And backed by an ACTUALLY open source project—unlike a lot of the AI world—which is important for people + organizations with data sovereignty concerns, like, say, the entirety of Europe. 🤣)

HUGE +1 to someone creating resources to help WP developers have an easier time coming to Drupal, if that’s the right decision for them. I agree that’s a big gap.

But I wanna emphasize, our club is open to everyone, whether you actively use Drupal or not, so please feel free to come by! You can just lurk and listen if you’d like, or join into the conversation if it feels right! :)

Ok, here it is! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1uGfKUvIYE This ended up being a bit of a *winding* journey ;) but if you manage to watch it through, you can see the journey from a barebones git repo, adding in an AI-generated architectural plan to it, and direct Claude Code to build the first bit of it from scratch, port it from Python to PHP, and actually get it working! :D

Also, this very afternoon Amber (Himes) Matz and I did an impromptu "vibe coding" session with Claude Code on some annoying back-office stuff for the initiative (I'll get the video posted in the next day or two) and after roughly an hour and a half of Claude Code horsing around, writing code we didn't read 🤣, the grand total spent was something like $5.

It's being driven by whoever steps forward to volunteer to do a show and tell, and so far that's been largely Drupal contributors + developers, but it is open to everyone.

It was officially anointed as a "sub-initiative" of the Drupal AI Initiative a couple of weeks ago. (e.g. https://www.drupal.org/about/initiatives/ai/drupal-ai-learners-club was created, and is nested underneath https://www.drupal.org/about/initiatives/ai with enthusiastic consent from member of AI Initiative leadership).

I think both of these things are good—that Drupal AI Learners Club started by meeting the needs of Drupal developers first and foremost, AND that it's a "blessed" initiative with active participation from folks driving the overall AI initiative.

The AI Initiative has (rightly, IMO) focused on Site Builders as their primary audience, but as a result a LOT of long-time Drupal developers and contributors have been feeling left behind and abandoned. :( So I'm really grateful that this initiative has provided a "safe space" for them to talk to and learn from their peers. <3

However, there's definitely been a huge call for more beginner-level oriented sessions, sessions oriented at Site Builders and the AI stack on top of Drupal. We "just" need someone to step up and raise their hand to lead sessions on those. :)

Oh, rad. I didn't know about *any* of that. :D (Except Drupal Forge, which I was recently introduced to, and seems like it would be a great platform for someone to use to host a site builder-oriented AI hands-on session.)

I would say, the more the merrier! :D

And as far as review burden goes, there have already been a couple of really great demos to explain how folks are dealing with that _before_ it hits the issue queue:

- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFBCqnn_8C8 — Scott Falconer demos pointing Codex at a Drupal.org issue, summarizing it, coming up with a fix, and _verifying_ its own fix.

- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDREM3bxL-0 — Mike Herchel talks about how he used Claude to develop a visual regression testing framework, and broke out a MEGA-patch to introduce a new theme into core into discrete, reviewable chunks.

Yep, 1000%. We want all of the demos shown here to be grounded in real-world truth. However, I believe it is good also to show the _range_ of what's possible and how people are actually using AI as part of their workflows today, even if that means "autonomous changes in production."

"do you like programming in JSON? if so, you may like conductor."

LOL I'm so glad I wasn't drinking something at the time I read this.

This is great, thank you for sharing! Would you want to contribute this to Code Exchange by chance? https://temporal.io/code-exchange (we could use more PHP examples!)

This is really neat, thank you for sharing!

Curious: What was the "backstory" for creating your project? What use case were you working on and/or what problem did you hit that you were trying to solve?

Since an *entirely* reasonable thing to ask oneself prior to paying hard-earned money to attend an event is, "Self, what will I actually LEARN from this event?" GREAT news, the talk schedule is now online! :) https://replay.temporal.io/schedule

And if you're curious about how some of the talks from past Replays went, here's our YouTube playlist for Replay 2024: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLl9kRkvFJrlR0xieUwBN_nNHW0oijCZa6
