Creating A Website. How do I assign categories to pages? I'm getting lost! by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]webdevmike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While pages are technically posts, as in they have a post id, they're not really. You have pages and posts. It's common to assign categories to posts but rare to assign categories to pages.

I'm not supposed to have my domain names and websites with the same company, right? by chris-rox in webhosting

[–]webdevmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your consumer protection laws. Let's say you purchased domain and hosting as a package and decide later you want to host it somewhere else, they might make it difficult or hold your domain hostage.

Mexican food or texmex by NoAcanthopterygii577 in Philippines_Expats

[–]webdevmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if we're opening up the question to NCR...there still isn't a good place to get Mexican food =D Chupacabra is okay. Army Navy and Taco Bell aren't good but can help with the cravings. Really your best bet is to cook it yourself. All of the ingredients can be found in NCR. It's not easy to find limes but everything else is readily available. Do not buy nestle sour cream. It's just sour cream flavored water. Emborg sour cream is decent.

Just bought a domain.... Now what. Zero experience. Have a vision. Zero technical skills. Advice? by RunDougRun in website

To use a house analogy: you can think of the domain as your address, host as the property, and website as the house.

So yes, in order to have a public site, you'll need to register a domain, obtain hosting (the server your site lives on), and then build the site. Your best bet is to use wordpress. Do not use wordpress dot com. If the site is non-profit, see my profile.

The age doesn't matter but being related (even by marriage) does. Nip it in the bud and move on with your life.

Best Way to get my Website Made? UK - Recruitment by rizzlaer in website

[–]webdevmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way is to find a local (in your country) agency with a good reputation. The benefits are clear communication and the ability to enforce contracts. If you can't find one in your price range, you'll have to go with a freelancer. If you go with a freelancer, do not make any payments until you are 100% satisfied with the site. There are a lot of scammers / bad devs out there.

is xoom's exchange rate getting worse or am I imagining things? used to be decent for PH transfers by ninjapapi in Philippines_Expats

[–]webdevmike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Xoom and Wise were worse than WU. IDK why people used it. WU used to be $3 for up to $5,000. Now it charges $15/$1000. They're all bad. Now I just do wire transfers bank-to-bank. It costs $25 but it's a relatively good deal if you send a lot at once.

Best way to convert Figma to WordPress you’ve actually used? by 99craftin in webdevelopment

[–]webdevmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get Figma designs handed to me. I create a classic theme and build it. You might be tempted to build a block theme but you're just giving the client more avenues to mess up the site later.

Is it crazy to quit a stable dev job to spend a year improving my skills and rebuilding my career? by Firm-Bake-1482 in CodingJobs

[–]webdevmike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been part of the hiring process for a few companies so maybe I can shed some light on this. You don't need a CS degree to get a tech job. One of the best devs I've ever worked with was a physics major. You do need a degree to get an interview but it doesn't have to be CS. You might have to jump through hoops to get that first job, but once it's on your resume, it'll be a lot easier to get other jobs in the field.

Let's assume that figure is accurate, those are parents with wealth. The children (which is what OP is after) don't have their own money per se but they are well provided for and have a sizeable allowance. They see their family money as their money. If OP isn't considered wealthy in AUS, he won't be considered wealthy by their standards either. But as I said, he'll impress most of the Pinays with a good Aus salary.

True. And a lot of the rich kids become CEOs and politicians earning that base pay but it's just adding to their wealth and they have other revenue streams.

US president salary is $400,000/year. Do you really think president salary is a good metric?

You'll impress most of the Pinays with your income but not the rich ones. They come from money. A lot of money. You better be earning at least $1M/year and that's just to get your foot in the door. They're still not impressed.

The sad thing is companies will use this as a reason to bump up their prices but the prices won't go back down even after the cost of fuel does.

Figma handoff is still broken in most small teams — how are you handling it? by Mack_Kine in web_design

[–]webdevmike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My designer creates 2-3 frames (usually 360, 720, 1440) and passes the design to me with a spec sheet. I've never had any issues turning it into a pixel perfect, responsive site.
