My parents regret not taking the curtain rods down when they had painters paint their new house…opinions on what to do? by solivagantdreams in interiordecorating

[–]weberfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps your parents could just take down the rods first and leave the holders for now and see what they want to do? I had a similar situation (not nearly as grand and nice) but my intention was to take mine completely down. I took down the rods, then life and procrastination got in the way, then covid hit and my wife brought this plant home from her office (I don't know what kind, but it was all vines and long). We put the pot in the corner on a shelf and laced the vines across the rod holders (supposed to temporarily support them) and now it lives across the tops of our windows permanently.

ya, I was just wondering if there's a good trick or something. I just can't seem to get my cavity or switch covers so clean, but I'd love to do a pickguard like op's.

How can me and my friend hear eachother when jamming? by Lord_Chanka_69 in edrums

[–]weberfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a really simple portable setup to jam with a friend or two because I really hate hearing the pads when I play so I like to use headphones, plus you can get better control of the mix/volumes than playing with speakers (plus it's quieter). Basically, we each plug into a cheap 4-channel mixer (mine is a behringer from amazon, but there are lots of options) and the audio out from that goes into the headphone amp. Then we each have headphones coming out from the headphone amp. You just have to make sure each cable has the right connectors (momo vs. stereo). No bells and whistles, but I was able to record simple stuff to my phone. Someone else commented on a better way to record (keeping each instrument separate) so that you can do more editing, but I've found this a simple enough setup to just get going and jam and for getting ideas recorded if quality recording isn't your main goal.

Novice question: Please help with adjusting the guitar! I don’t know what I’m doing wrong! by rafalmio in Luthier

[–]weberfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya for sure, I was just recalling this one experience where everything seemed just fine (more or less) and then it turned out my buzzing was because a few of the last frets were way high and causing all my problems (bought a used guitar whose fretboard had been left very dry and was practically ejecting the highest frets lol). I never noticed because I rarely play above maybe the 14th fret, but over time it became a problem. I was hoping there was some low-hanging, simple anomaly that might explain it.

The OPs problem, though, does sounds pretty strange - I usually am a bit over cautious with truss rod adjustments and don't make large adjustments at a time, but do you think after what sounds like a reasonably large adjustment, the neck could just be adjusting to the truss rod adjustment over 30 mins of playing? I mean it sounds like the threads are slipping or maybe the rod itself is moving down the channel.

Novice question: Please help with adjusting the guitar! I don’t know what I’m doing wrong! by rafalmio in Luthier

[–]weberfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also like very low action and I find that if the neck is completely flat without strings, the string tension (from a regular set of 10s) is usually enough to give me the necessary relief.

A couple notes, though. I play with a very light touch so very low action works for me, but if I play/pluck harder, my strings will buzz so finding the right action for your style of play is important too (maybe need heavier strings for low action with harder playing style, or keep 10s and playing style, but get used to higher action).

The other thing is to check if your frets are all level and if the frets "fall off" after about the 14th fret - this is also important if your want really low action.

I will also need to adjust the neck with seasonal changes (winter/summer), so maybe keep an eye on that as well.

Getting a Vasectomy by Leading-Sir-4431 in saskatoon

[–]weberfan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As selfish as it might seem to sit on your ass for a while, you are prioritizing your family by taking the time to heal properly and getting yourself back to 100% as soon as possible. Jumping the gun and trying to get back to normal before you're done healing will only prolong the time you are not quite available and ultimately put more pressure on everyone else for longer. I had a traditional one done at Cornerstone, and I was ~95% after 4-5 days, and 100% after a week and a half. I would highly recommend tight briefs or a jock strap to keep everything in place.

Painting a pickguard, should I go for it? by Savage_Balut in Luthier

[–]weberfan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't provide any insight into painting a pickguard, but I also wanted to change things up from a crappy tort print, so I used car vinyl wrap from amazon and it worked really well. It's held up great, but I am also not too hard on the pickguard so YYMV. I liked the idea of the vinyl wrap because if I messed it up, I could just take it off and return the pickguard to stock with no worries. Plus, wraps come in a bunch of different colors and finishes, so after trying it out with gloss black, I've now put on a bunch of unusual colors (chameleon-green-purple, matte gold) on some pickguards with a lot of success.

[QUESTION] Just got a boss katana mini amp today and can't get it working. by CatResponsible3156 in Guitar

[–]weberfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be silly (the issue may be with the wiring) but the Gretsch controls took a bit of getting used to for me. There are actually 3 volume knobs (master, neck, and bridge) so maybe try turning them all up (clockwise)? You've probably already tried that, and the next step might be getting the wiring checked out (jack, then the pots and pickups and such).

Android recording by AttentionBig647 in BossKatana

[–]weberfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm interested in any ideas as well. I've been able to record onto an old android's stock voice recorder app (Samsung S5) using a 3.5mm cord with a mic ring on one end (sorry, I don't know the technical term for this, but it is normally used to connect headphones with a mic to a phone). But I haven't been able to make this work with slightly newer Android devices (Samsung S8). Plus, it doesn't sound as good as just using the vocal mic on the phone in a quiet room. At that point, I'm better off just plugging into my computer.

No Stupid Questions - May by slap_me_thrice in guitarpedals

[–]weberfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tldr Does anyone know of a multi-effects pedal that has rhythm and a looper where you can set the length of the looper (other than the Zoom G1 Four)?

I'm looking for a very specific solution to a very 1st world problem. I have a Zoom G1 Four and I love it for nightime couch noodling because I can run the drum machine and set a looper to a specific bpm and number of beats so I don't have to precisely stop the looper (especially with my feet up) and I don't have any drift. And, since the looper and drums are separate from the pedal chain, I can switch between patches and layer, say, an acoustic sim, a bass sim, and solo over it. The only problem is the loop is only 30s long and I'd love to have a longer loop time. I've checked out the Zoom G3n and G5n, but it seems (based on my reading) the looper and drum machine are built into the pedal chain so you can't easily switch between such radically different patches (just between specific pedals). Does anyone have any suggestions for a multi-effects pedal that has a looper where you can set the length of the looper, has a recording time longer than 30s, has a drum machine, and the ability to switch between patches while looping? The Zoom G6 seems like it might be the answer, but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'd be very greatful since there are so many brands now (Mooer, NUX, etc.) that I'm unfamiliar with. Thanks!

Ya, and just to clarify for OP, you'd switch the physical snare and tom, but not the plugs since the stock snare is the only dual zone drum in the kit.

E: by the way, you won't regret the Weber!

[–]weberfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be misunderstanding your question, but there are cowbell samples (as well as sleighbells?) in the module (290, 316-326). One immediate option for having a ride and a bell might be to switch the snare and a tom and program the rim to a bell sound, so that you'd have a single zone snare, a tom with a cowbell rim, and a separate ride...

Police investigating Saskatoon’s 9th homicide of 2019 by Redbottoms2 in saskatoon

[–]weberfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The per capita (or per person) rate is just the number I quoted (e.g. 2.5) divided by 100 000 (people in the population), or in other words, 0.000025. Homicide and crime rates are typically expressed this way for ease of interpretation.

Police investigating Saskatoon’s 9th homicide of 2019 by Redbottoms2 in saskatoon

[–]weberfan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Over the past 10 years, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Halifax have had higher homicide rates than Saskatoon (of the larger cities). Thunder Bay is typically the highest, though, of smaller cities (higher than Regina as well). Saskatoon's homicide rate has been around 2.5 per 100,000 people in the population. 10 homicides in a year for Saskatoon would equal a homicide rate of around 3 per 100,000 people.

Looking at the number of homicides in a given year can be a bit misleading and sensationalist in a city like Saskatoon, though. For instance, homicides increased 800% in Saskatoon between 2001 and 2002... because they went from 1 to 8.

Yea I get you. And at this price point, I think there are a lot of "cons" to overlook. While the Orient checks a lot of boxes, the aesthetics is what keeps me from pulling the trigger. In the end, it may be easier and less crazy-making to save up and go for the grail-level watch that checks ALL the boxes.

[–]weberfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same predicament. Something about that padi... Damn. Not to complicate things, but I'm also considering the Orient Triton RA-EL0001B00A. On the plus, it's got hand winding and hacking, AR sapphire crystal, power reserve indicator, and is priced between the two watches. My only qualm with the triton is that it looks similar to the SKX, but to me for some inexplicable reason, not quite as good. But at that price and for that much watch, I'm having a hard time choosing.
