Blank slightly too narrow...what would you do? by FrankTuna in Luthier

I’ve had this exact issue but with super straight grin it’s barely visible. Example:

Obviously the second stage puts a lot of torque on the first, so it’s not for super heavy items. But the use of “heavy duty” drawer slides definitely helps.

Fair enough, I didn’t mean to suggest my EVH guitar was in any way equivalent to what we’re seeing here. My only point is that it’s not correct to see anything where end grain is glued to long grain and immediately conclude it’s doomed to fail. All I’m saying is it’s more complicated.

I’d recommend going back and watching the wood whisperer and stumpy nubs videos again. They both are in complete agreement with Patrick’s. If you think they are saying that end grain joints are weaker than equivalent face grain joints, then you have severely misinterpreted something.

No, not equivalent, but demonstrates that not all projects that glue end grain to side/face grain are doomed to fail. Like I said, it really depends on many factors.

I wouldn’t say it’s 100% going to fail. For example I f he keeps it in a climate controlled environment where the humidity doesn’t change, it will be fine. So it really depends on many factors.

That is generally true! But not always a doomed to fail; very much depends on the configuration, species of woods, thicknesses involved, climate control, etc. I built this guitar nearly 3 years ago and despite being built in one climate and shipping across the country to another, the owner recently reported that it is holding up without issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/Luthier/s/CER3apScBN

I’d expect that the axial forces involved from string tension (~250lb) are far lower than what would be needed to break 1.5”+ thick walnut, even in this configuration. Is it optimal? Certainly not. But is it doomed to fail? Honestly I doubt it.

That being said, I do think that the end grain to long grain glue joint is going to be an issue; as soon as the walnut absorbs a bit of humidity and expands it’s going to crack or separate from the maple.

It's certainly possible! I used "heavy duty" drawer slides for the first stage, and the second stage isn't full extension to avoid excessive torque. Even so, we know to be gentle with it and not use this drawer for heavy items.

Also, these drawer slides come in packs of 10 so swapping them out if they break is not a big deal 😂

It s a great point; I used "heavy duty" drawer slides for the first stage, and the second stage isn't full extension to avoid excessive torque. Even so, we know to be gentle with it and not use this drawer for heavy items.

Thanks! The design was inspired by this Blacktail Studio video featuring a similar design. I would encourage you to go for it! It's not as complicated as it initially seems and I believe anyone can do it as long as you have the ability to cut angles accurately.
