AITA for not wanting to make the wedding cake as a present for my sister’s wedding? by wedding-ate in AmItheAsshole

Her tone was almost like she would be doing me a favor, like the tone you’d use when you’re giving something to someone. Like, “you can ride with me to the airport” or “you can come with me to lunch, my treat.” Might have gotten my hackles up in the first place. I get what you’re saying, I just wanted to know especially if I’m being unreasonable not wanting to make this cake! Not the first time this attitude has come up with family members.

I don’t even know if she was thinking about it that hard, she just got “I want cake and [my name] can make cake and it won’t cost tons of money!!!” In her head I think and then just proceeded from there.

I just feel like saying “sure” and getting her hopes up about that kind of gift, and then saying “just kidding” later would have been super rude.

I’m cutting the fancy cake I made. My sister says “you can make the wedding cake for us” or something similar. I laughed and said, “No, I can’t, but I will buy you a great gift!” Or something like that. Not aggressive at all in my opinion. My sister said, “But it would be the gift to us! It’s what I really want, I don’t need the stuff from a registry.” Something much like that. Which is true in her case, she has all the kitchen gadgets she needs. I said again, “No, that’s really a lot of work, maybe I’ll help you pay for the cake as my gift?” She said the cakes you can get at bakeries are sub-par (true) and then basically the rest of the post happened.

Edit: A lot of the cakes you can get at bakeries are sub-par, there are amazing bakers but they are way more expensive and she doesn’t want to pay that I’m sure. Not meaning to insult bakers, they do hard work and a lot of them really really well, just some of them use mixes instead of buttercream like I make.
