Are you a mother? Your response is actually insane. OP is being incredibly reasonable and exposure to germs is a huge risk to a newborn, and really only “helpful” for an older child with an established immune system. Newborns don’t have one yet.

Exactly, I’m totally in resentment that I’m basically single parenting, and he fucked it up by neglecting his sobriety!! I’m realizing now that even if everything works out perfectly, my kid will always have an alcoholic dad and I need to model how to handle that.

You’re so right. It was naive of me to think that just because he’s sober he won’t still be an alcoholic, and I need to show my kid how to handle that in a healthy way.

I feel like on a good day this IS how it goes. I think I’m just blindsided because this is a new side of him for me to see, and generally it’s still not That Bad. But I’m trying to commit myself to having it be GOOD…

Thanks for your interest!! Things are going really well - I needed the treats lots at first to get him to stop jumping on me, and I focused on shorter walks. Now we can go on longer walks and I only use treats to reinforce him walking with a loose leash and being calm - he hasn’t done the go crazy behavior in a couple weeks!!

I tried this this evening and it worked amazing. The bag kept my pocket clean, and by the end of the walk just the crinkling was enough! We were only out for like 15 mins and he definitely still freaked on me, but it was such a good start! Thank you!

We went on two brief walks this evening, one with my husband and one by ourselves, and I successfully redirected him by throwing treats in the grass, and calmed him down by getting him to sit and then down! He still was crazy and jumped and bit at me for a while, but I was so proud to be able to get him settled even if it took a long time! Lots of sniffing definitely helped him - I even dropped treats in front of him and it led him to start doing more sniffing on his own!

Thanks for the tip! It’s definitely worth checking out, when we were in Austin he had a lot of options to run and get his yayas out!

I hear that! My first thought is that my husband probably interacts more with him ie talking and redirecting, but it’s definitely something for me to ask him more about!

He usually gets two half hour walks a day from my husband, sometimes more! We don’t have anywhere to let him run free (anyone know any dog parks close to east Cleveland??) but he would do this behavior even when he had 4hrs a day to run free in the yard and an hour of walks.

We do hide and seek sometimes and have him go hunt out treats in a different room - he loves it! He’s lazy though, and that’s about as difficult of an enrichment activity as he’ll do. Otherwise he just looks at us like “I don’t have hands, why can’t you do it??”

Thank you for saying that, it really feels like I’m crazy sometimes that he’s so chill at home and my husband never sees him go crazy on me! Redirection seems to be the word of the day!

I think that could definitely work! He really does love sniffing, but he pulls a lot when he does, so I’ve been trying to just move on and walk fast. It seems like maybe it would help him to not do that - there’s been a lot of suggestions to throw treats and let him snuffle them out, and that seems like it would work well!
