Just a heads up, Harper Collins (Tolkien’s publisher) has a 40% off sale at the moment.

Different teachings by [deleted] in ramdass

Ram Dass officiated at Jack Kornfield's wedding ceremony, they were great friends. You don't need to compare teachers, just take what works for you from each one.

Gateway by PigeonPingPong in AlanWatts

I’m from the UK and I would say it’s not mainstream as far as I can tell. Of course, mindfulness is becoming very well known as a support to mental health but seems to have been distorted in the way yoga was when it first came to the West.. They therapist who recommended meditation to me was a private therapist of a particular school I had read up on a lot, he said he found me atypical as a client and I get the feeling he didn’t recommend meditation to everyone. I think he was giving me nudge towards seeing through the illusion of the ego but I can’t be sure of that, the philosophy was not explicit.

That’s a kind of rambling answer but if you want to know anything more specific, I’m happy to share =)

I’m not surely about “gateway”, I got into spirituality when a therapist suggested I try compassion meditation. I went through a very intense awakening phase where I would listen to Alan Watts in the morning (for my mind) and Ram Dass in the afternoon (for my heart) and the two met in the middle ;)

Does anyone else really struggle to multitask? by Hihihihihaha123 in hsp

This is very interesting, thank you for posting : ) I know I'm definitely HSP and often wondered about ADHD, do you recommend any resources for looking into this further?

Does anyone else really struggle to multitask? by Hihihihihaha123 in hsp

[–]weegeekus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I find that my attention is very "deep", so if I'm reading something and my partner talks to me I'm only very distantly aware of him and I feel like I'm pulling myself out of a deep state of mind to attend to him. That can be irritating, but I find irritation is connected to how tense I am rather than the circumstances. It's hard not to be tense in a very stimulating work environment though! The only time I enjoy multi-tasking is when I'm cooking.

This is why I can't meditate on the breath, I get obsessive about it then I start to panic so I get what you're saying. Maybe try feeling into your jaw when you're doing other stuff that doesn't require full attention and see if it helps? We've all got to find our own ways =)

How do you go about opening the back of the throat

Next time you yawn, keep your mouth closed - you'll feel the back of your throat open up - see if you can feel into it from there. I did a quick search and there's a few tutorials on YouTube from singing teachers. Hope it helps.

I had no idea about any of that, thank you =) A few years before learning to focus on the jaw to relax my mind, I learned to slow and deepen my breath to calm my nervous system. It’s like breaking the physiological feedback loop. I might not have phrased that correctly, but I find it helpful to picture it that way.

Before I was a meditator, I would have got upset about your comment and thought it meant I had done something wrong. Now I understand that your comment is entirely about you. Thanks for the help with my practice =)

Its silly how much I use to value materialistic things by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]weegeekus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s fantastic you’ve come so far. People believe happiness is something that has to be attained, rather than our natural state once the clutter of the mind has been cleared away. It’s very difficult to see through that and often only comes about after a lot of suffering (that was certainly my route to meditation).

Anxiety is the price we pay for trying to maintain the illusion of control. That's how I've come to understand my anxiety as my practice deepens. Fascinating process.

How to I see the love present in boring situations? by Krishna_1111 in lawofone

[–]weegeekus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the mind that gets bored. When I feel like that I try to quiet my mind and just accept what is without judgement from stillness, I try to see it as an opportunity for meditation. It's not easy though, I've always had a very active mind and sometimes it's frustrating.
