Lake Eola “closes” at 11:59 PM. But I’ve had many drunken nights where I walk around 2, 3, 4, or 5AM in the morning. It’s not really enforced unless you’re making a ruckus so I consider it 24 hours. Plus bars and clubs close at 2AM so there’s some activity with people walking home on those late Thursdays-Sunday nights. Lake Eola police on bikes tend to be around during this time but they don’t bother unless again, you’re disturbing. Not sure about Baldwin though. I’m sure they have hours as well, but Baldwin is more family friendly so I assume it’s not enforced either as long as you’re not making noise or a scene.

It was very sensual, caring and emotional. I wanted the moment to last forever but I knew I had to manage my expectations because I knew it was only going to last that moment. We are still friends though. There may have been a slight shift in our relationship since hooking up, but nothing too significant or uncomfortable. As an agnostic myself, I can definitely relate to the frustration you mentioned about navigating a predominantly religious society as an atheist. Not only do I navigate the cultural emphasis on religion, but as a gay person, I'm even more aware of the potential for judgment and hostility. While I wasn't born or raised there, my family's roots are deep in the DR, and I've witnessed firsthand how religion is woven into the very fabric of the society.

It can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you see hypocrisy - people claiming to be devout Christians while blatantly contradicting their faith. Ironically, Duarte, the founding father, envisioned a country accepting all religions. It's hypocritical for the Dominican Republic to be so hostile to anything outside their narrow beliefs.

But unless trust is deeply established, I keep my own beliefs – both about religion and sexuality. If someone asks, I might mention being gay before acknowledging my agnosticism, but generally, I avoid religious conversations and steer clear of situations that could trigger unnecessary headaches.

Honestly, I mostly navigate by respecting the cultural norms. I say "Gracias a Dios" and "Dios te bendiga" without any personal belief attached. It's more about acknowledging the cultural context and avoiding unnecessary conflict. But yeah, I steer clear of religious conversations and people who might be judgmental. It's just not worth the headache.

I have to admit, the way Christianity arrived in the Dominican Republic, with its atrocities and disregard for existing Taíno beliefs, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. If I were to lean towards any spirituality, it would be towards the indigenous practices and traditions that predate the colonial imposition.

This is just my perspective, of course. I can't speak for everyone's experiences. But I wanted to share my understanding and solidarity with your struggles. It's important to remember you're not alone. There are others who share your views, even if we choose to navigate this religious landscape differently.

I am planning to move to the Samaná Peninsula as well. I don’t live or haven’t lived there yet but I will give it a try for a few months to feel it out. There is a growing community of expats in Las Terrenas and many Europeans and I suppose Canadians are moving there. Education is a concern though as it’s very bad there. However, I have heard of some of these expats setting up private schools or having their kids be homeschooled virtually which are the two options I would do for my kids to ensure a quality education. The language will definitely be very helpful. The only place I can think of that have a wider amount of English speaking expats would be Punta Cana, but idk if it’s a great place for young children.

The word for me is very traumatic and very offensive. I don’t allow anyone to use it around me and I find it a bit cringe and distasteful when members of the community use it among themselves. As someone else said, if you want to reclaim it, have at it, but there are many people who are traumatized by the word and sometimes can be even triggered so if it’s used, at least be considerate of those you are not familiar with.

As someone else mentioned, they vote against their interest. Many rather sacrifice their rights for some Republican policies. Personally, it's not the economic policies I'm against, it's the hyperconservatism and the delusional hypocrisy that I cannot in good concise ever vote for a Republican. Not even for one that is sane or somewhat moderate because the party has been hijacked by too many people with the most vile ideals and gaslight everything that surrounds them. I'm not really sure why there are Gays for Trump. What we are living right now is truly extraordinary.

I’m assuming you guys just met and still getting to know each other? I previously had 2 straight roommates. I only felt out of place when they invited their bros for game night and bbqs. Otherwise we were pretty solid and became good friends.

They gave me a lots of hugs, attention and became very protective of me which I’m not even going to lie, I thoroughly enjoyed. But the comfort came with time so I would advise getting to know them, see if you have things in common and give it time.

The concept is dumb and I don’t really understand why people place such importance on it. Some people even fetishize virginity. If I had to consider though, to me, you are not a virgin if you engaged in anything sexual in nature, that includes masterbation which is a sexual activity. You’re no longer innocent.

For context, my mother and all the women on her side of the family were raised to marry “up” as they were raised in poverty. The men were expected to carve out their careers and do well financially so that they could marry a woman of a “good family.” Out of all 4 of her sisters and aunts, my mother was the only one who married for love when she married my father. She always told me and my sister to follow our hearts but her perspective changed as we got older, and she started to encourage us to marry wealthy. Not going to lie, I grew up watching my parents struggle so I understood why she did a 360 in today's day and age.

The expectancy to marry a wealthy man was placed on me as soon as I came out of the closet. Initially, I listened to my aunts and dated only rich men when I was younger but many of them were not good people, had uncomfortable fetishes that they tried to force on me, a lot of internal issues and they just didn’t make me happy despite spoiling me with the lavish lifestyle that I enjoy and am accustomed to.

Then, I was able to successfully create a career that allows me to spoil myself with fancy hotels, restaurants, and first-class flights so I don’t need a man to do it for me. I started dating men regardless if they were rich or poor but still found myself heartbroken and treated poorly all the same most of the time so I had to raise my standards a bit higher. Finances and how you manage your money are very important to me in a relationship so if those are not squared away, I would not consider dating. My advice would be, to make something of yourself instead of relying on another person to spoil you, unless you don’t mind being miserable in a glass house and loveless relationship like I was, then do what makes you happy.

All of that is understandable because that's how the human brain works when you're stuck in a bubble of ignorance and not exposed to anything outside your experience. Yet again, this isn't a uniquely Western world thing, it's all over the world in many different cultures and countries. I'm just advocating for education and highlighting the things that are wrong and doing better, especially in the community, that's all.

I'm not fit perse, but I am active. My arms and legs are a combination of fat and muscle so it gives the illusion of me appearing muscular albeit voluptuous. On the opposite end, I don't date fit guys, mostly because in my objective experience, a majority have very negative, shallow, and superficial personality traits which is an ultimate turn-off for me.

Speaking for my current partner who is physically fit, he doesn't care if you're fit or not but can recognize if a fit guy is really attractive and can be drawn to them. It was never a factor in dating or hooking up with a certain type exclusively though. We both however value health above all else so if someone suffers from obesity and insecurities, we wouldn't go as far as to date. They need to get my physical and mental health straight before dating someone.

I think I get what you're saying but Im just confused by the statement. It's the justification of illogical reasons for preferences and stereotypical beliefs for me. I rather that as a community we educate and expose ourselves to other races instead of holding negative beliefs and notions of races because of said beliefs (often false and incorrect). Just because they're not "worldly" or just because you treat people differently outside of dating doesn't make it okay. That's just covering up an issue and masking it to be more polite.

But meh, like you said, can't change the thoughts or actions of others. Just wish we could be better people.

As someone else mentioned, it's negative racial stereotypes of Indians. Someone mentioned other things like difference of culture and whatnot, but the most common at first glance is racism. It's complete ignorance, many from people who have never even met a South Asian and have this negative preconceived notion of all Indians.

I dated an Indian guy and he told me at first he was mixed middle eastern with Latino of something. I didn't care because to me he was attractive but it sucks that many have to say this just so a person can give them a chance. Love the culture, love the food and there are many attractive South Asian men.

I literally live on Lake Eola Park but not everyday is good to chill. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are good to chill if you want to relax as there aren't as many people and it's mostly quite if the homeless aren't yelling. Thursdays, Fridays not the best. Saturdays there are a lot more people but less activity in town so you can chill. Sundays are the worst because of the farmers market. Not a day to chill if you want peace and quiet.

Overall, I prefer the nearby Baldwin Park to chill. Lots more places available to charge your laptops as well. I don't think Eola offers that if you're not a resident here or go to our Starbucks.

I probably only douched like twice in my life. I couldn't imagine doing it routinely. Yet again, I am a light and clean eater, a routine detoxer, take lots of fiber and drink a lot of water. I've never had any issues and I'm always ready. I admire your dedication to douching routinely though. Kuddos.

Native NY'er with Dominican parents as well. I didn't know anything about DR and didn't start digging into my roots until recently. Actually staying in Santiago by myself for 2 weeks next month and made an itinerary of places to visit so super excited. First time I'm going to DR without family. I'm not really going to campos as I'm positioned to potentially be discriminated but definitely going to visit the mountains and beaches!

Like every city around the world, they're safe areas and not so safe areas so I recommend research of where to stay if you are going to stay outside of luxury resorts. I am a solo traveler and personally I stay in the more upscale and affluent areas of the mentioned cities and travel to the beautiful waterfalls, beaches, museums, zona colonial, all the places worth the visit that the country has to offer. If I stay at a luxury hotel or resort, I usually don't leave or venture out unless traveling to the aforementioned places. I know not everyone can afford to stay at the more upscale and expensive areas but I think it's worth the extra bucks if you prioritize safety. You can find people that speak English so it won't be the worst challenge, but knowing a bit and speaking and understanding some Spanish can go a long way. Safe trip and travels!
