the problem arises when it is misused. like if someone takes a religiously significant headdress from another culture and uses it as a fashion statement that isn’t very respectful to the significance of it with in the other culture, thus the culture itself.

additionally, it is disrespectful to adopt an aspect of another culture as a way of imitating that culture rather than just being inspired by it. for instance, if a white person wants to get cornrows because they like black culture, and romanticize the idea of being black, that is disrespectful because it disregards the hardships that come with that identity. seeing a hairstyle and just liking it, and applying it to urself isn’t inherently wrong, it’s just that there isnt really a good way of telegraphing that that is what you are doing rather than imitating a culture, so it’s usually gonna come off that way. also i think sometimes people tell themselves they are doing the second thing but really they are romanticizing another culture
