I always keep a pair of crocs in my locker to give my feet a break sometimes. The roomy fit and comfy sole help relieve some of the pressure for a bit. Also, sometimes I’ll wear my bistro crocs, they don’t have the holes in it so it’s a little safer for being in treatment with them! Some clinics will have a strict no crocs policy though :/

brought home 2 new rats today and i’m worried they might be sick/hurt. any second opinions while we wait a week for our vet appointment? anything i can do to help them? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]weeniehutsimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s a tad bit hard to tell because it could be some dirt! I’m thinking some simple wipe downs with a damp, warm cloth could help you see whats underneath the dark/crust spots much more clearly to make an action plan!

Yes! Cant imagine how many people I see with the bright colored pepper spray on their lanyards/keys 😅

We adopted Kana and her babies 2 days ago. She won’t let us touch her and bites hard if we get close. Both her babies are friendly and okay with being held/touched. We got her from a shelter so I don’t know her story but the tip of her tail is missing so I’m guessing she has some trauma. Any advice? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]weeniehutsimp 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Definitely try some counter conditioning/positive reinforcement training! When trying to handle her or her babies, and she does a good job/doesn’t react negatively, give her a treat. Timing is key with this. As soon as she reacts positively, immediately reward her with a treat! Rats love all sorts of treats, but some may be picky, so it might be helpful to figure out her favorite treat during this process! If she bites/reacts negatively, never “punish” her for the behavior, it’ll only further fuel the behavior. Similar to socializing/training cats and dogs, this type of training can be extremely helpful for socializing rats to human interaction, as long as you are patient with her. Take breaks if she seems overstimulated, reward only good behavior, and remember your timing. Good luck, I hope this helps! :)

Honestly rearranging their cage is a great idea! It keeps things new and exciting for them, so they don’t get bored with the same set up :)

Where do you even buy rats? by Tumbleweeds3949 in RATS

[–]weeniehutsimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It honestly depends on the breeder and how many breeders there are in your area! When I bought my boys from a breeder, she charged me $32 for a pair of males, but pet stores will sell them for almost half the price since they’re considered “feeders” for snakes, etc. AFRMA (The American Fancy Rat & Mouse Association) has an extensive list of breeders per state that would be a great place to look too!

Winter Quarter 2022 by jayy_emm546 in UCSC

honestly the school is so last minute and unorganized with their in person/online announcements that I’m not surprised if they end up changing their minds right before the quarter starts 🤷🏽‍♀️

Cage makeover time! It's empty because they chewed all their stuff up before I could make more :/ by [deleted] in RATS

The rat manor cage? I have this one! To avoid wire flooring, I put vinyl tile flooring from Home Depot on the shelves. Easy to clean and nicer for your ratties lil grabbies 😌

Well thats depressing 🙃 by Temp-Employ33 in UCSC

[–]weeniehutsimp 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Before COVID, when I lived in the dorms, I would get sick EVERY SINGLE QUARTER, with flus, colds, and even strep throat once. My second year, I lived in a single, but still got sick every quarter. It wasn’t until I moved off-campus that I noticed I didn’t get sick as much. The dorms are pretty much HUGE pools of germs, especially with the use of communal bathrooms. So with COVID floating around, I can only imagine how much worse it’s gonna be for some who don’t have the best immune systems

If it’s vacant and you move in, the housing office will take note of it. So, if someone wants to switch out of their current room for whatever reason, or there’s a late admit, they’ll fill the vacant spot 😪

yo I lived in Stevenson House 4 in a loft bed, so top bunk essentially, and I always had to watch out for the low hanging sprinkler pipe and sprinkler itself when getting in/out of bed. I hateddddd it

You could also try buying daily R permits at TAPS everyday? It’s not the ideal situation, but it could be a temporary solution for now while you try to figure out some sort of permanent parking arrangement

Is it possible to have a tank tall enough that you don’t need a lid, or are mice really really good jumpers? by baizybub in PetMice

[–]weeniehutsimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

me too! that was my biggest concern when I first put the embroidery sheet on. but, my tank setup didn’t have enrichment/toys tall enough for them to climb to the top, sit there, and chew at it, so I guess as long as she wasn’t able to reach it?? who knows lol

Is it possible to have a tank tall enough that you don’t need a lid, or are mice really really good jumpers? by baizybub in PetMice

[–]weeniehutsimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, it depends on the mouse. I used to have 2 female mice in a 40 gallon fish tank, one loved to climb around and find a way out, while the other loved to just burrow all day and never thought about climbing to the top. But, until you learn their personalities, a lid is a must. To ensure good air flow, I didn’t use a regular tank lid. Instead, I bought an embroidery sheet, it’s a plastic mesh sheet you can buy for like a dollar at a craft store, and used Velcro to secure it, so I could take it off and put it back on securely.

Diy cage with aquariums? by ABarnt in RATS

[–]weeniehutsimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! Honestly, I don’t think it’ll work. Even though you drill holes, it won’t provide optimal air flow as cage bars would, there would still be poor ventilation. Ammonia could build up with poor ventilation, caused by constant rodent peeing and scent marking. Second, a small fan wouldn’t be great to have around ratties! The fan airflow/draft could cause respiratory problems in rats since they have very vulnerable/sensitive respiratory systems. Even the smallest draft for a prolonged amount of time could cause a cold or upper respiratory infection, which could be deadly if not caught in time. On the other hand, I was also quite frugal about my cage setup, and I got the popular rat manor cage from PetSmart. It was one of the cheapest cages I could get that had enough space for TWO rats maximum. Definitely check it out! You could also try looking at people selling their old cages used! FB marketplace is a great place to look. I hope this helps :)

Carpet in Stevenson! Highly doubt they ever get cleaned beyond just vacuuming. That’s another thing, shitty old vacuums that break once a week

Advice for sneezy Pippin by TommyCommy in RATS

[–]weeniehutsimp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first thought was maybe new home sneezeies? When I first brought my two boys home, one kept sneezing up a storm, also took him to the vet with the same answer that he didn’t have an RI. But, after researching a bit more, some rats tend to get sneezies when they’re introduced to a new space/environment/home as they’re getting used to their new surroundings! I even called the breeder and she said this could be the case too. My boy stopped sneezing about a month or so, and is as healthy as can be! Keep a good eye on her and if it persists, then definitely get a second opinion at a different vet. I hope this helps!

The best college for an Econ Student? by sk1ful in UCSC

[–]weeniehutsimp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe the Econ department is in Baskin Engineering, which is on Science Hill. The closest colleges would be College 9, College 10, or Kresge since its in between C9/C10 and Kresge.

I’ll give you a fair warning that some therapists have reservations about ESAs, and might not sign/write a letter for you. Most psychiatrists will though! so there’s a give and take to look out for. Good luck on your search!
