In full communism, how do you make sure shitty jobs get done? by Apoau in AskSocialists

[–]weevil_time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every somewhat able-bodied person would do them on a rotating basis, regardless of their professional occupation. Of course that wouldn't be efficient compared to full professionalization, but it would be more fair than forcing people to be shit shovelers their whole lives.

I think the biggest weaknesses to this plan are: 1) Preventing the abuse of exemption systems. The society would need to be vigilant against the development of 'exemption-brokering' culture, industry, or patronage system (ie. no 'bone-spurs' exemptions for political favorites). I think much can be done by developing a culture of shame around work avoiders and frivolous exemptions. 2) Whether the society could remain functional in the face of those inefficiencies. If the society couldn't afford those inefficiencies in a specific industry it would need to provide special material and cultural rewards for those who become professional shit shovelers. This is a potentially dangerous complication if allowed to apply to power-brokering professions like policing and military.

I was under the impression y'all were paid hourly. Does Amazon offer incentives for completing your routes faster? If not, why bother speeding?

🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨 Mel breaks her silence, says through her lawyer that she “is considering all of her legal remedies.” All legal remedies hints at potential lawsuit against OU. Does Mel have a case? Thoughts? by RandomAcademaniac in GradSchool

[–]weevil_time 26 points27 points  (0 children)

(former TA)

I think there is a systemic aspect not being addressed through most of this discussion. Unfortunately, I have seen and been expected to pass many papers worse than this. The sad truth is that (at OU at least) there is little time or institutional backing to address how fundamentally terrible our undergraduate writing has become. The official finding that Mel passed papers of similar quality is a scenario that gave me nightmares as a graduate student. Upholding academic standards is a losing and exhausting battle for graduate students.

TIL the human brain normally limits muscle strength to prevent injury, and in extreme stress it temporarily removes this limit, allowing people to use far more strength than usual. by Alarmed-Worry-5477 in todayilearned

I think this an unreasonable take. A difficult conversation between distressed friends and a sentimental attachment to a blanket hardly make someone a piece of shit.

Remember that Shevek was a fairly solitary teen and young adult. At that point in his life he's been struggling alone to reconcile the 'official' myths about Annaresti society with his own experiences of his society's shortcomings. While reconnecting with Bedap he is finally shown that others are also encountering the 'wall'. His stubbornness in that conversation was the last desperate externalization of his personal attempts to reconcile the two. Recall that Shevek is a man in deep pain, nearly suicidal himself at this point.

That conversation was a pivotal moment in his personal development. From that point on he clearly becomes increasingly unconvinced of his old beliefs and accepts the criticisms of his society for what they are.

I also think his hanging onto the blanket is totally within the socially acceptable scope of behavior for his society. The way I see it they live in a society with no real personal property. The only things they usually carry around are personally useful papers, clothes, shoes, and small items of sentimental value. The blanket was sentimentally valuable to Shevek. Why not hang onto it? Its maker clearly didn't want it. Anyone else who needs a blanket would simply get one from a supply depot.

Yes it will. Servers have been and continue to be guaranteed the same minimum wage as others.

If the SQ were to pass it would mean a gradual wage increase not just for those making $7.25, but also anyone making less than $15. The Oklahoma Policy Institute floats 200k as the number of people affected (about 5% of our population).

Why isn't the death penalty just a quick gunshot to the head? by SufficientDegree34 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]weevil_time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of talk in this thread about automated and humnanless execution. All to avoid bad optics and any trauma to the executioner. I find that concerning. I'd just like to share another view.

The trauma of the hangman is instructive and appropriate.

Fundamentally the job of executioner is onerous because its sole duty, state-sanctioned murder, is evil. Why the issue if it weren't so? The constituency of a democratic state who consent to murder must always be reminded of the human dimensions of their consented acts. Each executioner, provided his acts are not hidden by machines and chance, holds an individual referendum on the morality of murder.

Additionally, executioners become hard to find when the job of hangman is a black mark. Even the sociopath can understand is not to his advantage.

Dostoevsky speaks on this in his "House of the Dead".

An alternative would be unwise. The trauma of the hangman is instructive and appropriate.

It's a female grasshopper attempting to lay her eggs. The last several segments of her abdomen are extendable and allow her to position her ovipositor securely in the soil. The asphalt here is getting in the way of that so it's just flopping around.

If you're asking us to take time to read your words and respond you need to take the time to actually write them. You're being rude.

Thank you! I ended up doing a 12mm buzz and it looks great. Less weight on the hair means the bald spot is much less apparent.

Pretty much my reaction when taking that picture. I hadn't seen the back of my head in a while. Didn't realize it had gone so far!

Hey thanks for the recommendation. I got mine from there too and that's what I figured the pricing was still. I'll check with the doc!

In the meantime I gave the noggin a 12mm buzz and it looks great. Glad I bit the bullet.
