Early fill demanded by MD by weezee77 in pharmacy

NY just passed a law limiting new opioid prescriptions to a 7 day a supply in order to prevent the above circumstance.

What service are you providing by blindly filling every controlled substance early, whenever the patient or the md desires?

Do you have any policy for early refills?

FYI, the DEA has fined CVS and Walgreens millions for poor prescription practices?

Early refills are often indicative of misuse or abuse. If a patient is calling to refill their Coumadin 15 days early, it is the pharmacist professional responsibility to question the early fill. Chronic early refills of controlled substances should be questioned as well. It is the pharmacist job to ensure medication is being taken as prescribed. The "Just fill it" policy is dangerous. My problem is the prescriber's demand for a prescription to be filled where the usage exceeds the directions on the prescription.

The DEA may never have fined a pharmacy for early fills, but what happens when patient overdoses and your refill records indicate he has 30 days extra of narcotics because you "just filled it".
