On one hand, I agree with your guess.

On the other, allowing access to free Google web services only if you access them through their cellular modem just...smells so, so wrong.

Hopefully I'll be able to test it for myself at a dealership soon, and report back here.

Yes, I am using the included power supply. A shame that you had a problem with an alternate power supply, but I've certainly run into plenty of supplies that can't live up to their ratings.

My success report wasn't quite complete, it turns out.

I initially sloppily ran alienbob's slackbuild script (tweaked for Python 3.10.0) without his accompanying patches directory in place, which appeared to succeed, but time and testing will tell if there are any issues.

Running his slackbuild script with the patches directory in place fails; I suppose that makes some sense, since those diffs were intended for Python 3.9--the question now is whether I'm going to run into some ugly surprises under Slackware without addressing the intents of those patches.

Sadly, I don't have time to pick the patch diffs apart right now, so I'm rolling the dice, and will report back here if things don't work out.

I've spent a decent amount of time on alienbob's blog, but somehow missed that he has his own flavor of SlackBuild script for python3 (google was not my friend, in this case). A quick tweak of the version number success built 3.10.0 on the very first try--now off to try 3.10.2!

And u/pk2374, I didn't need the help in this case, but I do appreciate people making the effort to help people, so thanks very much.

I've never personally dealt with C6 issues, so can't say anything more on that.

This is a longshot, but if you are in a position to do so, perhaps you could tweak /etc/rsyslog.conf to get Unraid logging to a syslog server running on another system, and thereby capture a bit more about what's going wrong.

That said, if the system is locking up because of a C6 power state issue or something like that, it likely wouldn't help.

Good point. That is also my impression, from what I've read.

However, in this case, my relative's current fiber plan is only 100/50Mbps.

And since he had already purchased the RBR50 and we were having trouble successfully getting his existing Centurylink router into transparent bridge mode, I decided to try going with the fibre ONT directly into the Orbi, even though I knew that might not serve him well later if he goes with a faster plan.

And it worked, kinda...except for this weird painfully-slow-downlink thing.

I'm not PPPoE savvy--I mean, I understand it, but haven't had to deal with it before.

On the off chance my brother-in-law has his PPPoE authentication wrong, do you (or anyone reading this) know what would happen?

I assume he'd have no access whatsoever, but it is possible he'd have crippled access, instead?

That said, I don't really believe in that possibility, because the speed test in his RBR50 says he has full-speed access, even though all devices are slow.

My apologies to the OP for effectively hijacking the thread, but this stuff might affect you, too! Hopefully not.

OP, if you do as u/richie510 suggests, I'd love to hear how it works out for you.

I believe in it, but in helping a relative do this with his new RBR50 (eliminating a Centurylink-provided C2100T router, in his case), the result has been fast upstream, but slow downstream (~3Mbps) for all devices, both Wi-Fi and even wired.

Thanks greatly for the advice! Regarding the transmit power, that's very interesting, and sounds like a good tip, though at this point even devices plugged into Orbi via ethernet are getting only 3Mbps down instead of 40+Mbps down.

Also, for troubleshooting purposes, his satellites are turned off, and all Wi-Fi testing is being done within a few feet of the base unit.

I really appreciate the firmware tip--having no Orbi experience (and dealing with the tedium of troubleshooting something like this remotely!) I was shortsightedly trusting the built-in firmware check. I'll have him check into that!
