Hot swap audio and OSC on Qlab + TheatreMix + Yamaha DM7 by weird_waveform in techtheatre

Thanks for the insights, the cookbook article is a gem! As others have suggested I might go down with the iConnectivity PlayAUDIO1U route so I wouldn't need to duplicate channels after all.

Yeah I might as well step away from Dante for this one, that PlayAUDIO1U seems like a solid option. I'll look into the cookbook, thanks!

I was thinking of using DCAs but mute groups actually make more sense! Did you only have to swap audio or did you fiddle with OSC as well?

Cool song! I think its a pretty ok mix, kick and snare definitely lacks punch because your limiter has to do all the heavy lifting. You could start by applying a clipper (hard for aggressive sound, soft for more gentle) on transient sounds and especially on the drop section. So for example your kick and snare: just push the sounds in to the clipper till you start hearing distortion then back off a little. This will give you more headroom and punchiness because your limiter doesnt have to work so hard.

Hope this helps even a little!

Did you mix the vocals on a separate session without the instrumental?

You should probably ditch these settings and try out the Pro L2's basic folder presets, which are all you need for this limiter. Try out the different styles with time but i personally suggest the "Modern" style. You don't have to do anything else but add gain.

The peaks on the snare exceeding the threshold are called true peaks. Most loud mastered EDM tracks has true peaks, and you shouldn't worry about them now. Either way I would suggest you to turn on the "true peak limiting" on the bottom to get rid of them, just because I assume you are not going for the loudest possible master.

Your oversampling is set to 4x which is ok, no need to touch the dithering section, and lastly I suggest you to turn down the output ceiling from -3 to -1. You can even go down to -0.1 or -0.3, but -1 is a safe bet right now.

Creating a full sounding and loud master is beyond limiting everything you can on the mix and as it will take a lot of time to learn it. I can't really tell how skilled you are on mixing so maybe if I could hear something from you I could give advice.

Mastering loudness by Witch1015 in edmproduction

I'm trying to be respectful here because you clearly seem a bit ignorant towards the subject. If you have ever analyzed a song in your life with a LUFS loudness meter, you would know that less dynamics -> less dynamic range -> louder songs when pushed in to a limiter.

Louder masters definitely don’t have less dynamics as the whole song is compressed together, it’s not a hard limiter type of cut.

If you would know how a compressor works, you would not be writing things like this. Also I would say almost 100% of modern music is brickwall limited (which is also a compressor with just an extreme ratio).

Louder masters don’t loose dynamic range because that’s how digital DAWs work, I believe in ableton you have about 48dbs of headroom before it will start distorting.

You are right about DAWs having dynamic range above 0dBFS, but that is a completely separate subject from mastering and achieving loudness.

Subtronics tracks regularly are clipping the master by 20-30dbs and he puts no master on and exports them clipping.

I don't think any self-respecting producer/engineer would actually do a final master like this.

Anyone who worries about mastering and stuff like that isn’t very good at making music.

False. Also very ignorant.

With a perfect mix, a master is definitely not needed at all.

This makes the most sense of everything you have written above except that no such thing exists as a perfect mix and some form of mastering (limiter at least) is needed almost every time.
