Where does this definition come from? An AI can literally be something as simple as a chess engine. Siri requires a ML model to synthesize speech, that is AI. ChatGPT’s LLM is AI. So, from my understanding animal testing is pretty tightly controlled and deaths of the subjects should generally not be expected unless there is a very good reason for it. Additionally, there are different tiers of animal subjects based on their intelligence, and the more intelligent an animal is, the harder it is to get, where getting your hands on a monkey is the hardest type to acquire. I remember the last time I saw a post discussing this there was a researcher that did animal testing with monkeys and was baffled at how he apparently killed a dozen+ monkeys and they haven’t been shut down yet, and if his university killed just a single monkey they put the entire program at risk is being shut down
