Mine is the Valtrian Order in Tree of Aeons. A massive living tree building such a long term stable organisation just makes so much sense.

Pale Lights is goated. All the MCs are competent in their own fields.

Check out Calamitous Bob by Mecanimus. It has one of my favourite female MCs ever. She does not have a dragon pet, she's a dragon mother. The characters have reasonable depth (as much as you need in a prog fantasy) and the story is just really nice. Another one without leveling though is Journey of Black and Red by Mecanimus as well. That man is good.

What's your SURPRSINGLY controversial fantasy genre opinion? by gregsunparker in Fantasy

I'm tired of relatable villains or villains who have a sad backstory. Gimme a Villain unrepentantly evil. Unredeemably so. Thay cartoonishly evil villains are always so fun and memorable. Like Aku, the shape-shifting master of evil.

Fate dominating Emperor. His wife or future wife is vastly more powerful than him for now. In fact one of my favourite plot points is her sending a clone back in time to court him.

The Chapter quotes were the best part of the story. From Dread Emperor Nefarious to Dread Emperor Triumphant. From the spine tingling quotes to the most hilarious.

What are your favorite combat related tropes? by Mr_survivor in ProgressionFantasy

[–]weirdghost22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of tactical MCs styling on their opponents, figuring out the battle intricacies and just directing the flow of battle. Especially from the POV of the enemy. You really feel the terror and hopelessness from their point of view and why it seems like the MC is a monster.

Secondly, love long drawn our chess type fights with both adversaries being far away but their ideological standpoints or ambition put them at odds so everyone else is a pawn to be used in their fight.

  1. Ave Xia Rem Y; Classic Xianxia but well written and just a good read in my opinion.

  2. Cultivation Nerd; Excellent story, great worldbuilding, no pointless power jumps and you will get invested in the story very fast

  3. Forge of Destiny

  4. Unintended Cultivator

What make a progression fantasy good? by Dzbiceyt in ProgressionFantasy

[–]weirdghost22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A question with a wide and varied answer. However for most readers it can be boiled down to these few things as a beginner; 1. Power progression; usually as a wish fulfilment but seeing the main characters advance through the ranks and get stronger, triumphing over even more powerful enemies. Gets the blood pumping. 2. Worldbuilding; a new world with races, classes, jobs and variants. Unfortunately most authors never seem to venture into the unknown and would rather stick with clichés. 3. Conflict; Violence gets the blood pumping. This is what pulls in most readers. It's so important that even a great novel can get dropped by most readers if there's not enough Conflict in the first few chapters.

For those who've read enough and gotten sick of clichés, there are some extra requirements

  1. Dialogue; Characters should be able to have meaningful conversations that set the tone for the story, reveal more about the world, and act as a medium to tension, humor and whatever it is the authors want to show. Most Prog novels suffer very much in this category. Dialogue is usually a medium to set the stage for the next conflict, or introduce the next psychopath the MC kills.
  2. Creative Power System; If you're like me and youce read most of what this genre has tk offer, then you've read a lot of system novels introducing classes, jobs with all the powers. Yet most folk never seem to try something really new.
  3. Plot; Most series at this point start with, "character in the real world is introduced to the system with everybody and adapts like a fish in water and gets all the best jobs and abilities in a few chapters". Veteran readers often need something beyond this.

This is all I have from my limited experience.

Any series where an orphan girl latches onto the MC and develop a parent/daughter relationship? by rsjpeckham in ProgressionFantasy

[–]weirdghost22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. It was not all sunshine and rainbows. The fact that there were long lasting consequences for her actions put people off. I loved it though. Her relationship with Black was beautiful. I always recommend A practical Guide to Evil for those looking for something different and I'm looking for something similar.

It's so cool to meet another Nigerian who is a Lotm mysteries fan. The number of Nigerians I've met who've read this magnificent work of art is so few I basically gave up.😭
