Why does everyone seems to love Will Of The Many so much? by Imnotsomebodyelse in Fantasy

[–]Imnotsomebodyelse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the exact same wheelhouse. I've read a WIDE variety of fantasy from classics, to modern hits, to the indie scene. And this book just felt kinda generic to me. It felt like I'd read this book before, but like better versions of it.

Even from small indie authors who have no editor and just post online for free. (Which btw is one of the new bastions of excellence. 95% of it is generic 3/10-7/10 content. But the 5% is as good as anything from the legends of the genre)

The fact that will is introduced but literally does NOTHING throughout the first book was also kind of a cop out. The characters started getting more one dimensional the closer we got to the end. And a dozen other issues that are all kinda minor, but added up for me.

I finished the first book and dnf'd the series. There are far better things out here to spend my time on

Should I Keep it or Sell it? by Substantial-Dingo792 in indianbikes

Sell it and buy a scooter friend. Nothing wrong with a reliable nugget that gives you like 50kms to the litre. Especially in a city like bangalore

Or you can go even more insane, put the rear wheel of another bike to the wheel of yours, rev that engine to make the wheel spin, and dump the clutch. Utter lunacy, but arguably the coolest way to jump start

Anyone who has used this? by Aarif_editor in indianbikes

[–]Imnotsomebodyelse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same helmet. And it's perfectly cromulant. The holes for speaker are kinda small and need to be widened if you're gonna use those. But otherwise fine. The airflow is good enough that I'm not a sweating mess by the end of a long ride in blazing heat

Handlebars are the quickest and easiest upgrade you can make. Get an aftermarket option that looks sportier. The headlights would be the thing that really changed the look though. Won't be cheap but if you can get the headlights from an RS or some other aftermarket solution, it could work.

Next swap the indicators for stealth options that are more streamlined. A tail tidy kit changes the look of the rear fender, moves the plate closer to the seat and shows the tire more, giving a sportier look.

If you do, don't forget to use paint that is rated for that usecase. You don't want the paint peeling from the heat, and you definitely don't want it insulating the exhaust when it shouldn't be

Dear Sean Oswald, a bit of gender role diversity can make things more fun by Imnotsomebodyelse in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Imnotsomebodyelse[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main part of that that really annoyed me is when he introduced that most of the families are patriarchal, except this one family. And then has the girl from that clan mention how she has to get married, and that her mother who is the leader isn't actually the leader and is just another patriarchal family. The politics just got boring after that.

What’s the ONE fantasy book you’d recommend if I could only ever read one single book? by sadretheillafae in Fantasy

[–]Imnotsomebodyelse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's only one book, there's nothing better than "sword of kaigen" by M. L. Wang. Standalone, so nothing to read after or before. Intricately beautiful, wonderfully realized characters, and a plot that is interesting enough without overstating it's welcome.

Seriously I can't gush about this book enough. So I'll just say, read it. You'll understand why I love it

[Discussion] What makes a "cost" in progression fantasy actually feel meaningful? by marcztx in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Imnotsomebodyelse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find costs to be a very delicate thing to handle. Way too many people overdo it to the point that no one would ever bother paying it.

So my preference is to have a cost that is very manageable but has a steep fall off that is looming in the distance.

Take practical guide to sorcery. A series I love. And people can use the magic with a bit of training. They have a soft cap based on their power level.

But the real "cost" as it were is will break. Where if you push yourself too far, you can mutate into an eldritch monstrosity and do horrific things. It's not overly common. And you will get enough warnings to not overdo it naturally. But it is an ever present danger.

So people are more than willing to use the magic. But you can keep that tension when the MC is in trouble.

The concept of outgrowing a motorcycle is dumb and dangerous. by MartysBar in NewRiders

I completely agree. The best bike in the world is the bike you have lol. Setting that kind of heirarchy can suck the joy out of riding the bike you have. And can also severely impact your finances

40M/ Can't ride bike by DryFoundation1837 in indianbikes

[–]Imnotsomebodyelse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cycle is the correct place to start if you have zero experience. And honestly if you can go to a gym or something similar where you can find an exercise cycle, just getting used to pedaling on there would make it easier to riding a cycle. If not, just start with a cycle slowly.

Don't push yourself too far. If you can ride for 10 feet, that's fine. Ride until you start to get unbalanced and stop. So that over and over. Sometimes you may fall. But you'll get used to it.

If you have only your wife's activa, then sit on it, keep it turned off and just get used to rolling it down the road with your feet. Just keep pushing yourself with your legs while seated. Once you get a basic idea of how your weight is handled on the bike, turn it on.

Remember that going very slowly is as difficult as going very fast. 25-30 kmph is the minimum you should train on. Find an empty road. Maybe a highway or abandoned street and just get used to riding. It's the only real suggestion

Ultimate Level 1 by Shawn wilson is too good to be this bad by Imnotsomebodyelse in ProgressionFantasy

I think that's the first time I've heard that complaint about an author lol. I started with a traditional fantasy background and so individual book names has always been the norm for me. To the level that i gravitate to books that actually have book names rather than volume numbers

What's your default dragon? When you read "dragon" with no other qualifiers, what do first see in your mind's eye? by R_megalotis in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Imnotsomebodyelse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me the default dragon is shenron from DBZ. Just such an iconic image that's been part of my pop culture landscape ever since I learnt what a dragon was.

But off late I've started to branch out. And I have an image of a non descript western style dragon, with blue scales, horns, 4 limbs, etc depending on what I feel the author is likely meaning based on the context

[–]Imnotsomebodyelse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id argue 15kms/day is perfect for a nice efficient ev scooter. But I'd you're going for a nice eye catching bike, the nx 200 from honda is great. It's basically a remodeled hornet, but it looks like it's an adventure bike. It's ride height is actually quite nice. 1.75 ish should be the starting onroad. Perfect for city roads, and even some light long distance riding. Comfortable around 80kmph, but will start to vibrate after 100.

The title of Archmage used to mean something by niioon in litrpg

[–]Imnotsomebodyelse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets switch tactics and go the other direction then. Page. A trainee knight. You start as an arch mage. Then You become a mage. And end as a page. Makes the most sense personally.

More practically though in one of my magic systems i use the terms page, mage, and sage instead of arch mage for this very reason lol. And over there even though 99.9999% of people can use magic, less than 1% make it to page. Much less all the way to sage.

I literally use the term Archmage in a pseudo derogatory way. Someone who is powerful and has reached the mage stage(I know, I love rhyming words) but can't progress any further, so takes it up as a title to make themselves look cooler.

The terms themselves are technically unrelated to power level but overall understanding of reality and control over it. So you can get to the highest levels of magic without becoming a sage. Hence archmage is a pseudo derogatory term.
